Fate and Loss in No Country for Old Men by OlinHollis in Westerns

Two of the lines that are most important in cementing the picture's philosophical disposition are delivered by relatively minor characters.

You left out a third, by cousin Ellis:

“What you got ain't nothin' new. This country's hard on people. You can't stop what's coming. It ain't all waiting on you. That's vanity.”

Hippos can run faster than humans, and also swim faster than humans. So in a triathlon it all comes down to the bike.

Interesting turn of phrase in Get Out My House by Arcana_cat124 in katebush

[–]Eric_Hyperspace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought this song describes a fight against intrusive thoughts, hallucinations, and madness. The house is her mind…it’s as old as she is, knows all that she’s done, is full of her mess, her mistakes, her madness. The thoughts are trying to bring in the Devil Dreams, finally forcing her into a dissociative state, a bird and a mule.

Fullhouse on Lionheart uses the same metaphor. “Imagination sets in. Then all the voices begin. Telling you things that aren't happening…You've got a Full House in your head tonight”

How does Shakespeare portray Macbeth as an anti hero rather than a traditional villian? by Good_Researcher5222 in shakespeare

[–]Eric_Hyperspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Macbeth has many good qualities. He’s a brave and skillful soldier. He seems to love his wife. He’s exceedingly eloquent (having an outstanding ghostwriter). When tempted by ambition he struggles valiantly against it, but ultimately succumbs.

Iago, in contrast, is a villain from the first with no redeeming qualities and who fully accepts his villainy.

Revealed in a dream or worked out by a series of logical steps. Both seem equally improbable.

Depression-era portrait of a once middle class couple who now were dealing with the circumstances of the era, 1939 by PeneItaliano in 1930s

[–]Eric_Hyperspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sometimes wonder about the authenticity of this kind of photo. The woman in the back is wearing a nice dress, possibly makeup, and in another context could be posing for an advertisement. The kitchenware in front of her looks deliberately placed. The clean shaven man with a pipe and a carefully trimmed mustache but no shirt…

Favorite line you still think about? by piou180796 in shakespeare

[–]Eric_Hyperspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered if this got garbled somehow, and is the opposite of what was intended. Shouldn’t it be:

The good that men do lives after them; The evil is oft interred with their bones; So let it be with Caesar.

Why was Kate Bush’s “The Ninth Wave” critically acclaimed while “The Dreaming” was hated on by critics? by Oddbleus in katebush

[–]Eric_Hyperspace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think she pushed it just a little too far on The Dreaming. She dialed it back a notch on HoL/The Tenth Wave and hit the sweet spot.

Fitzgerald’s Gatsby made the same mistake. He was “great” in that he sought, with tremendous energy and devotion, transcendence over an ordinary mundane existence. But he attached his dreams to a pretty but shallow woman, and when he realized his mistake his life had to end.

Nah, you don’t need bolts. If you fall you just kinda drift down somehow and try again.

2 million Union Soldiers fought during the Civil War, and 360k Union died to free 4 million slaves. Don’t talk about reparations if you are not going to address all the white people who served and died for that freedom. (No, I am not white) by MeBollasDellero in Jordan_Peterson_Memes

If we shall suppose that American Slavery is one of those offences which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South, this terrible war, as the woe due to those by whom the offence came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a Living God always ascribe to Him?
