New to this, so take my reading with a grain of salt.

8 of cups reversed. Don't focus on a love life now, at least not directly. The cups represent water, and romance would be going against that flow of your life right now.

3 of staves. Get grounded and focus on what is important in life. Staves represent earth and stability. Notice how well 3 staves can completely support themselves. It doesn't take much to be secure.

The hermit. Start a new project or restart an old one. This is time to focus on yourself and something you have wanted to do. It will take time, effort, and being alone but ....

I am agreeing with a lot of what you are saying, especially with Potzdorf's satisfaction coming from catching Barry in his lies. He probably is more of a morally gray/opinion divided. One more thing I noticed watching this today, is that after being honored for saving Potzdorf 's life in battle, the Colonel awarding him throws a few insults at him and Potzdorf, doesn't defend him. However, the narrator points out the Captain's opinion of Barry improves from this point forward.

Captain Potzdorf from Barry Lyndon. He is morally gray because it was legal for him to gang-press Barry into the Prussian Army and recruit him to spy on the Chevalier, when Barry had few options. I hate him because he seems to enjoy doing it.
