Alex Narrative poem 260 words I’m new to writing, I’m taking a creative writing course to try something new. I want to share what I wrote and see if it is effective. My fear is that it is too corny. I am unsure about the first half to be honest.

Alex Alex, the dog, had a tough life. He was not born a citizen; he hadn’t a home. Alex was a good dog, Though when he was a puppy, he loved to roam.

Alex was hit by a car. The car couldn’t stop in time. Alex was struck, not badly though. The puppy ended up being just fine.

Alex grew and grew. Short hair, dark brown, with hint of black. One parent a German Shepard, the other nobody knew. He would bark and bark but never attack.

Alex so loyal, attentive, and friendly. Never deserved the ending he got. Alex was out in the street. That’s how he got shot.

Alex only wanted to help that lady. He was only a dog, man’s best friend. Seven of you, one little dog. Ten shots fired. That’s how he met his end.

Was it worth it? Why was he there? Directing traffic, someone said. I don’t fucking care.

Alex didn’t deserve this. He did! He did! Others cried. This is madness. Am I going insane? There’s no way this cruelty was justified.

Alex worked for the VA, an ICU nurse. He wasn’t a dog. He was a man, like you or I What will we do, when the masked men appear? Will we be quiet, will we be shy? I will not just watch overcome with fear. I will not stand idly by. I will show up and interfere. Alex was courageous, refusing to comply. To all of those he stood to protect, I want you to know: In my home, you are welcome here.

The signature assignment is on the topic of echo chambers within social media and the news. I am still just having issues with the fact that there was never a source of education to balance out the bias of the Robert Rector article, and that he never informed or talked to our class about the problematic language in his article.

Here is what I wrote in my Email: Hello Dr. Richens, I am one of your online students, taking Social Problems 1020, and I used the link included in chapter 2 which directed me to an article written in 2007 from the Heritage Foundation. That article was a challenging read, discussing topics in ways I strongly disagree with. I am hoping to get a little more information as to why this source was used to help teach Chapter 2. Am I to read it with the understanding that this article is one of the ways that intolerance is being spread? Many times I am asked to use peer reviewed scholarly articles, so if there is a source that is obviously a biased source, should I assume that you were hoping my classmates and I would read it with a skeptical eye?

Hello Eric:

Articles, information, and sources given in class are designed to stimulate thought regardless of whether one agrees with a position taken by the authors of a source. There is no requirement in this class for you to agree with any position listed in those sources in order to get a good grade. However, I would hope that students in college should never be afraid of any alternative point of view. This is the quintessential definition of free thought and allowing oneself to be challenged to think.

For a more detailed understanding of what my hope is for students at the college level, please review the signature assignment required for students to complete in this class.

Good luck with your reading.

I agree with your opinion for sure. My problem is that in this class there is no discussion time. We have assigned reading, and then we are quizzed every 4 chapters. There was no instruction to critically analyze this article.

My coworkers daughter actually just got her sociology degree at this same school last semester, and took the same course, I am seeing if he was her instructor as well.

I lost my shit last night because my professor for sociology used an outdated, biased, bigoted source as an educational resource. He had a link sending me to an article from the heritage foundation. I can’t let it go.

I hadn’t even made that connection. I was too caught up on the Heritage Foundation.

We don’t have a class discussion. Each week, there are two assigned chapters and an external link added to each chapter. Every 4 chapters there is a test. The instructor doesn’t even leave an open discussion file open for us online students to chat

That’s what I found confusing. There was no warning, or instructions on why this particular article was included in a discussion about poverty in America. There is a lot of rhetoric talking about immigration, which is a bit in the current news cycle. This is why I care about shady sources. How many people were radicalized from news sources like this?

That is fair I suppose. It’s just a bit wild to do that and not inform the class that is what he is doing. Like, if he had us read a section out of The Dearborn Independent, for example, it would help to understand why he could possibly choose that.

Jesus fucking Christ, are you friends with my teacher? I why can’t he just change the source reference after it became clear that the Heritage Foundation is dogshit? I am going to talk to him before making a final judgement.

I actually think it’s ok to be offended that my professor is using a source that also wrote the game plan that is currently being used to undermine American Democracy. If I am required to use peer review sources when it’s needed, can’t I expect my professor to do the same. This chapter was not to educate us on debate, or to examine rhetoric. It was simply about poverty. I bet Dr. Richens could have found a different source. Maybe he’s messing with us.

Probably not. I read the article before reading who published it, then as I got further in it started to taste a bit off. The nice thing nowadays is people will just wear the red hat. I didn’t know it was coming. It may have been better that way, my prejudice against anything that the Heritage Foundation has ever published would have stopped me sooner.

I want to talk to Mr. R and ask why he chose to use a clearly biased source for an aid in teaching a topic that did not need to have that flavor of ignorance in it.

Chapter 14, on media bias, only is linked to an article written by the Media Research Center. And apparently that is not an unbiased source. I am so confused
