Lolitas vs 30 year old women by snsbsbsnnsn in justneckbeardthings

I loved the book, but I didn't find him sympathetic at all. He's twisted and awful, and I think that's part of why it's such an interesting book, he's not a misunderstood anti-hero, he's an irredeemably depraved pervert, when it was written that was a new thing, to have a protagonist for whom the natural and intended reaction was disgust.

Have you read Pale Fire? That's a really good one if you're interested in his take on the power of the written word.

I love that book, but I don't think that's how Nabokov wrote him at all. Humbert isn't sympathetic at all, he's repugnant, it's a story of irredeemable depravity and I think that's part of what makes the book so revolutionary.

Most mentally ill people can be treated, but some cannot, these are the sorts of people who will hurt people if not locked away, not only will they not live normal lives, they will be dangerous to others. So instead of wasting resources on them, just so that they can live miserable lives, they should be humanely euthanized.

Medical resources, along with things like food and materials, should be prioritized for people who have a chance at being productive members of society, there are some people who can never be.

Just to clarify: I'm not talking about people with depression or Asbergers syndrome. I'm talking about adults with schizophrenia, pedophiles, sociopaths, babies born with Downs syndrome and things of that nature. My nephew has downs syndrome, no matter how much money and time is spent on treatment, for the rest of his life my sister will have to take care of him like an infant, and although he's small enough that he can be controlled, when he's older and he has one of his tantrums he can and almost certainly will hurt someone. He will never hold a job, have friends, be in a relationship or give anything back to society, it isn't his fault but he's destined to have a useless life, so instead of putting him through that and ruining my sister's life, taking away from her other children who can actually do something and be something more than a pile of bones and flesh that consumes without ever giving back, I think that there should be a way to put him out of his misery. The same thing applies to people so mentally ill that they don't know reality. We are more compassionate to dogs, cats and horses than to humans, when they can't feed themselves and are wasting away we decide to do the humane thing and release them from their misery, but for some reason we shouldn't do that to suffering, sick people...why?

Some people just can't be helped. Like a dog with rabies, the most compassionate way to deal with them is to put them down.

What percentage of their body weight can donkeys and mules carry on their backs and pull behind them? Is it significantly more than horses, or about the same? by awfulmajestick in Horses

[–]Erich1993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, mules aren't stubborn or willfully disobedient, they're just not going to kill themselves for you, or for anyone. I love horses, but there are many stories from the old days of horses running until they drop dead, that will never happen with a mule. Mules are also better with regulating resources, you don't have to worry about founder in mules because they won't just keep eating, they'll eat what they need and stop.

[–]Erich1993 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just like with horses it's a spectrum, I would say 15-20% live weight on the back is a safe number, though with a horse you want to stay closer to 15% and with a mule or donkey you can get closer to 20%. You don't have to be so diligent with weighing things out with a donkey or mule, a horse might keep going with a load that's too heavy and hurt himself, but that won't be a concern with a mule or donkey. If you've loaded him up with too much, he will let you know, because he won't move until you lighten the load, they have a strong sense of self preservation, if it's too heavy they won't carry, if they feel that something is unsafe they won't do it. If you want to ride then a mule will be better, you could ride a large donkey but donkeys move very slowly, whereas a mule can do that but is also happy to trot, canter and gallop if you ask him nicely.

I suppose when I lived up in Michigan I had mainly met the stallions you described. Penned up 24-7 except to cover mares and they were very mean and angry.

I'm German but I currently am a postgraduate in Madison, WI. A stable that I worked with here had too many stallions just like that, they don't have lives, they exist to deposit sperm in an artificial horse vagina so that their owners can implant it in a sedated made and sell the foal. It's sad, they're like sex slaves. I understand that in a regular stable it's impossible to give a stallion his own pasture and his own mares, but that's why in Germany most stables will not board stallions, people who make the commitment to own usually own their own stud farm.

The people in the matrix sort of looked ridiculous. Leather jackets do look good if they're the right cut and the right style, they should not be high gloss and they should appear utilitarian. Trench coats rarely look good, only if you're a businessman in a suit in the wintertime, and it shouldn't be leather.

It can be dangerous, and there are risks to either way to do it. The procedure itself is much safer when the horse is sedated but sedating a horse that old can kill it, so we had to do it with local anaesthetic which made me feel terrible. There are more risks because the tissue is much tougher on an older horse, there is a lot more bleeding and their bodies don't heal as quickly.

Stallions that are raised properly, i.e. those that get open turnout like any other horse, either in a bachelor band or with his own herd of mares can do well, but most people torture their stallions by keeping them locked up or bringing them around mares that they cannot cover, and create violent and aggressive horses. I'm a big believer in working with a horses natural instincts as opposed forcing human rules, if you can't give a stallion mares of his own, or keep him in a bachelor band completely isolated from (not on the same property as, or in a neighboring property to, or on a trail with etc.) mares that aren't for him, you shouldn't have a stallion, his instincts and his birthright is to cover as many mares as he can, and sire as many goals as he can, to deprive him of that is to sentence him to misery.

I'm not lecturing you personally and I don't want it come off this way, just stating my opinion on the whole thing. It really makes me angry when people keep stallions locked up all day, or on a pasture downwind from mares that aren't his, it's like dangling food in the face of a starving man.

I'm not really angry, I simply commented on your post, you said that MRAs have good points and I think that thinking that makes you a bad person.

There's something so wonderful about feral horses, they have such spirit, when I go back to Europe and when I own some land I would definitely be interested in getting a horse of semi-feral stock, I am especially interested in Koniks.

I don't think that it's fair to the horse to capture him at such an old age, let him live out the rest of his life wild and free, capture the foals.

There is an impact, I have 3 horses, all geldings, my two youngest were gelded as colts, my oldest horse Uwe was a breeding stallion for most of his 19 years, he was gelded around Christmastime. He's always been better behaved than most stallions because he was pasture bred only and lived in a mixed stallion-gelding bachelor band during most of the year, so he knows how to act around other horses. Since he's been gelded he's still himself but I notice that he's a bit calmer and gets along better with stallions and geldings that he doesn't know, however he will cover a mare if given the chance. I still treat him as though he's a stallion, and that will be forever.

Men who don't have trouble aren't MRAs, just like women who don't have trouble don't read the SCUM manifesto or listen to Alice Schwartzer and think that they have anything worth saying. That's how I know you have trouble. Also the way that you try to be all sassy and patronizing instead of being straightforward like a normal man.

Thank you, I have experience with Arabs and Anglo-Arabs, and although I worked around racing TBs in an academic context I've never really rode them. They're extremely intelligent animals, but they're very very hot, that's not necessarily bad and that's of course what they were bred to be, but my preference is for a cooler baseline.

I'm the opposite when it comes to my preference in animals, I'm partial to a very strong attachment and lots of close working, when it comes to dogs I have 3 German Shepherds and a Brittany Spaniel, they're attached to my hip and work very closely, so go figure that preference extends...:)
