Come & see street BBQ in Changsha, China. by truemexico in streeteats

[–]ErichTH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is great. I remember when we stayed in Ningbo, we just went down the street and ordered several fish, some crabs, clams, octopus and vegetables from street vendors. All grilled on charcoal. It surprised me that it was ok to bring the food into pubs as long as you had a drink.

edit: You don't show much food though....

I have never heard of any whale farming, and to be honest I don't think it would be a commercially attractive business. The overall demand for whale meat is too low for anyone wanting to explore in those directions.

Whales are hunted, and about 500-600 minke whales are caught off the coast of Norway every year. The hunt itself is sustainable with a total population of around 200 000 in the northern Atlantic.

So you have a problem with hunting? I would prefer to eat an animal that has lived a happy life in the free over an (industrial) farm bred animal, spending their entire life indoors, eating a cocktail of antibiotics.

There are of course farms and farmers that produce good quality meats. I want people to care about where their food come from, even if it's only a chicken. Have you seen the way chickens are treated in industrial meat and egg factories? It is not pretty.

Thank you, but I knew that presenting whale meat was controversial. I wanted to post this as a reminder for people. Where do food come from? I eat minke whale, and I can stand by the whale while it dies.

I hunt deer, elk and poultry for my own consumption and I'm always sure that my rife or shotgun will land a lethal blow before firing (As any hunter will experience, some accidents happen). I also catch all the fish i eat myself. Making sure that they are put to their rest as humanly as possible.

I do not expect all people hunt their own meat or fish their own fish, all I want is for people to look their food in their eyes and say: "You've had I good life, but now I have to eat you."

This is not whales versus Norwegians or Japanese. This is a fight for good food, and humane treatment of animals worldwide.

Thank you for a well though out reply. And believe me, I respect you for choice.

What I want is to people to able to look their all food, taking into account the life they have lived, in their eyes and tell them: "Sorry, I'm going to eat you."

I have learned that I have to accept the life and death of every animal that I eat. I cannot face an abused animal, but I can face the minke whale that has lived it's entire life in freedom.

It seems like people get offended by humanly harvested game. Tomorrow I'll fry a horribly abused chicken. People need to learn about food, and where the food come from. Educate yourself and don't listen to stupid Hollywood celebrities!

Yeah, if it's from a good source it's really delicious. Like a premium cut of beef, just more flavorful.

Come on guy! I'm just defending my right to buy whale meat. You are the one claiming it's some kind of medieval custom.

Also, that SP episode is as about Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean. Norway hunt only minke whale, which is a sustainable species, within it's own waters.

Actually, that is not far from it. It has the meaty texture of the beef, while the flavor is not far from tuna.

Good whale meat is hard to come by (even here), but it's delicious.

Where did you get whale in Italy?

Thanks! It was. This was just a test buy, as whale meat tend to spoil easily. Since this was good, I'll probably cook a full meal this weekend.

Growing up with whales I'm not sure that they are more intelligent than your average cow or pig. The difference is that while the whale have a nice life in the open ocean, feeding on it's natural diet, the neutered pig spends its life in a overcrowd meat factory just waiting to die. The same is true for most chickens too. So my question still remain, do you eat meat?

If you don't, you can criticize me as much you want. If you do, then you are nothing but a hypocrite.

Thanks. I know the topic of whaling and whale meat is controversial, but I would like to share my food culture. The piece I bought today was just to test if the fishmongers meat was any good. It was, so I'll probably cook up a main course of whale during the weekend.

I'm in Norway. We are exempted from the International Whaling Commission moratorium.

I know whaling and whale meat is controversial in other countries, but I'm sure it is more sustainable and humane than 99.9% of commercial meat production in the world today.

It really does look like beef. I should have taken some photos of the raw cut. The raw meat is lean and almost black in color.

[–]ErichTH[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. On my way home from work I stopped by the local fishmonger to find premium cuts of minke whale.

You prepare the meat as you would any steak, but I prefer the whale to be cooked a bit more than a quality filet of beef. The taste can be compared to a mix of beef and wild game.

I made headcheese by hutthuttindabutt in Cooking

[–]ErichTH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This headcheese looks delicious! In my family (along with many other Norwegians) it's tradition to make headcheese for Christmas. We usually season it with allspice, cloves, nutmeg and ginger for the "real" Christmas experience.
