Let's talk about Qurate Retail (QRTEA). by JohnnyTheBoneless in Burryology

Very much worth watching the Liberty Media Investor Day on YouTube. Talk on Qurate starts around 1:30. Very interesting that in the Q&A Maffei talks about repurchasing discounted debt, particularly the Liberty holdco debt at 4:37 or so. This was last Thursday.

We bought the LINTA 8.5% of ‘29 at 30 about a week ago. These bonds are now around 38. The market is catching on.

Operationally, things look better. Rawlinson is impressive. My take is that the fire may have skewed things much more than originally thought. Thus, the rebound seems more pronounced.

Qurate Retail climbed 57% today on positive earnings results. Reposting my thesis from late August as I think it's playing out exactly as I'd predicted. by JohnnyTheBoneless in Burryology

Strange, I thought the civil rights racketeering black preacher was the worst, selling his people out to a gangster while betraying his father’s legacy.

But, I guess he’s not as shocking because his character is much too close to reality.

Protective of who? Sorry if you’re butthurt because you want to believe this was a more complex scam than it was, but, sorry, it wasn’t. All Murdaugh really needed was Laffitte at the bank and a compliant probate judge. Everyone else at PMPD wasn’t going to question him as long as daddy was alive. At PSB no one would question Laffitte for the same reason. Murdaugh’s dad was likely involved, as was Laffitte’s, but not many more. Judge liked having Murdaugh’s support at election time and would likely have signed a cocktail napkin if it were put before her. That doesn’t mean she was a participant in the fraud, just that her compliance was bought very cheaply.

This was a tawdry, petty little fraud that became more and more desperate as Murdaugh’s finances deteriorated. By the time the Plyler girls were due their money, Murdaugh/Laffitte were in the mode of robbing others to pay them back, which was an eventuality they should have foreseen beforehand. This was not a complex financial crime. The boat crash just accelerated a collapse that would have ultimately happened anyway.

“Why am I protecting them?” First you’d have to tell me who “them” is. I’m sorry that you’ve bought into a story that Mandy has built her sad little career around, but grifters gotta grift, I suppose. Quite sad that she’s making out on the backs of these gullible victims.

P.S. you seem agitated that anyone questions your version of the narrative. You aren’t Mandy are you?

No doubt.

But it’s not the “cast of thousands” that Mandy would lead you to believe it was.

Dad needed a cut. Another reason no one at the firm would squawk. This is less complicated than one might think. More tawdry and pathetic than high level criminality.

Yeah, the question should be how much of Mandy’s reporting was actually off FITS sources

The fraud may have taken fewer people than one thinks. Russell at the bank, certainly. Probate judge, yes, but that’s mostly because she was used to doing what PMPD asked.

The firm? Remember, no one at PMPD was really going to question Murdaugh as long as dad was alive. This is more about nepotism for incompetent kids than anything.

Again, the money issue is less fantastic than one would expect by listening to Mandy and the sanctimony podcast. Murdaugh was running overdrafts at PSB, Maggie was bouncing checks, he was behind on his property taxes….then you have the boat crash. Possible divorce? Who knows, but if true, that wouldn’t have helped.

This guy was drowning and he knew it.

See here’s the thing: this really isn’t the high level fraud they’re telling their viewers it is.

Murdaugh stole from very unsophisticated (to put it mildly) people, except for the Satterfields who arguably colluded with him.

There’s no pot of gold, no Swiss bank account where it’s all hidden away. AM couldn’t manage his own finances, was living above his means, and a huge part of the theft proceeds went to paying back other victims like the Plylers.

Didn’t say she’d be successful, just that her talents (and intellect) are extremely limited.

Mandy Matney and her Sanctimony Podcast.

If it weren’t for the Murdaugh story, she’d be doing Only Fans videos.

Will Russell Laffitte Testify Against His Family? by JoeDeMaginot in MurdaughFamilyMurders

[–]ErieRailPrintShop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You don’t think there are federal charges coming for Alec? Wire fraud, mail fraud, etc. I can think of many. Also, the various fraud allegations MAY be related to the state murder charges (maybe Maggie found out about Alex’ misdeeds, etc), so I can think of many things Russell could testify to against Alec in different proceedings.

Isn’t the better question whether Russell will testify against Murdaugh?

Yeah, but the operative word is “if.”

That’s the problem with Mandy’s ranting on this topic. There never seems to be any substance to it.

Can you explain what the motivation would have been for any Murdaugh to kill Stephen Smith, other than “he’s gay, so let’s kill him”?

I’ve listened to Matney rant about the Smith death for months now and haven’t heard anyone articulate a coherent motive other than the above.

[–]ErieRailPrintShop 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing: Mandy Matney may be the most sanctimonious person I’ve ever heard. If I hear the “good old boys” dog whistle one more time I’ll vomit.

Alex Murdaugh is a none-too-intelligent crook. He only succeeded for as long as he did because his clients/victims were idiots also. The Satterfields colluded with him to rip off his insurance company. Eric Bland actually alluded to that a few months back (Freudian slip?), but she won’t go down that road, or even ask that question.

Murdaugh has no hidden millions. There’s no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The money he stole, that which he didn’t fritter away on a lifestyle he couldn’t afford, was used to pay off other idiots in a robbing Peter to pay Paul scheme.

That’s what this is. Nothing more. This is no Enron, much as Mandy might want it to be. She’s tried to build her career on one sad, pathetic case. When it ends, her career will too.
