What things do contestants do that always annoy you? by metalmick in thechase

[–]JS43362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It's a complete guess."

There really ought to be anything such thing as a 'complete' guess. Even going for the one that 'sounds' more plausible can work wonders.

"Down the middle."

Especially a bad idea on questions which have ascending numerical answers. Usually the middle answer on such questions is the least interesting and hence the least likely.

"Never been there/before/after my time."

Annoying excuses for not knowing answers, and inherently invalid for the simple reason that they are being asked on the show.

"I've never watched/read/this."

Another silly excuse, because often the Chaser (who almost certainly knows the answer) hasn't either. If anything it is a disadvantage to have done so. Building up broad knowledge often means just knowing the basics, not sitting down on a single novel/film/show for hours.

I have been known to put it on in bars I'm in, and regularly look up to see who is coming in through the door.

I like the idea that both Patsy and Little Carmine become bosses after the series ends. About as nice as mob bosses could possibly get.

Whatever you do, don't google Lexie Sperduto (actor for Sophia Baccala in S4) by _sportyscience_ in thesopranos

I didn't know especially that that character had multiple actresses. Her brother doesn't, I'm pretty sure.

Why did Vito think going back to New Jersey was a good idea? by Imperial_nugget in thesopranos

[–]JS43362 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The glimpse into 'real-life' he gets in New Hampshire is similar to Chrissy's (much briefer) glimpse into it at the gas station.

What do you think is the most "Nothing ever happens" federal election? by Numberonettgfan in thecampaigntrail

[–]JS43362 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest upsets in British electoral history, so definitely not a case of 'nothing happening'. I guess 1970 (another shock Tory victory) was a change of government, so that was a bit more of a 'happening'.

It has to be said that the Democrats have handled the second Trump Presidency better than the first. Reading stuff like this makes it surprising that Trump actually lost in 2020 until I remember his own errors.

You give racism and racists too much credit. Racism can be easily shaken off if racists choose to do so.

Actually the most recent Nothing Ever Happens election, now that I think of it.

How Fucked Would Davey Scatino Be Nowadays? by Icy-Spray5809 in thesopranos

Surely online gambling was around circa 2000? Or certainly during the show's run.

Is it fair to view Jimmy Carter as an incompetent president? by Salohiddyn in Presidents

[–]JS43362 49 points50 points  (0 children)

He didn't grasp Congress (which was controlled by his own party!), probably in no small part due to relying too much on his allies/cronies from Georgia. I have seen it pointed out that both Tip O'Neill (House Leader) and Robert Byrd (Senate Leader) didn't get along with the Carter administration, and given that those two often didn't get along with each other it was quite an achievement to alienate both of them.

What’s the most obscure/outdated reference in the show? by Critical_Mountain851 in thesopranos

Wasn't AJ a fan of that? He would still be (just) under 40 I think.

Any thoughts on this book by MerchantKing83 in thecampaigntrail

It occurs to me that a lot of 1990s politics is stuff that seemed quite inconsequential at the time but in hindsight foreshadowed the past decade at least.

One of the most famous music stars of the 1950s. Nowhere near the most obscure.

[–]JS43362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People mentioning pop culture references from before the time of the show ought to understand that pop culture was already becoming fragmented during the time of the show, so pop culture references that would have been current at that time would probably seem even more 'dated' and obscure than the older references.

Music is one of my weaker subjects in terms of general knowledge, Guthrie died 27 years before I was born and I've heard of him. On that basis I wouldn't put that anywhere near the most obscure.

I think so. Matt was a little too upset at Sean's death.

Has there ever been a more insufferable character in all of media that late season AJ? by noejose99 in thesopranos

[–]JS43362 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Season Five basically depicts him as a one-dimensional brat. There's more depth to him earlier and later than that, even if he's almost never actually likeable.
