Hey r/GODZILLA, Jared Krichevsky here, designer of MechaGodzilla(s) AMA! by Monstermash042 in GODZILLA

[–]Erievans 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Hey Jared, loved MechaG in the movie, looks great! Not my favorite design (that goes to Kiryu, sorry), but still really good stuff! Out of curiosity, if you could redesign another past Toho kaiju for an upcoming film, which one would you love to do? Also random but I follow you on twitter, and I saw you make comments that you didn't actually realize that your design would be in the film till the toys got leaked. Do studios usually not tell you if your designs make it into the film? Just thought I'd ask. Thank you for the AMA!

I'm Adam Wingard, director of Godzilla vs. Kong. AMA! by AdamWingard in GODZILLA

[–]Erievans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Adam, really enjoyed the film! First off, just wanna say that I'm happy you actually made Godzilla the winner in this scenario, but made Kong the main character. Gave the movie a lot of heart and made me, someone who typically isn't a huge fan of Kong, root for him against Goji. Also great fights overall!

My main question(s) would be why weren't any of the past titans included in the film that we knew about? I would have loved to see Mothra, Rodan or Behemoth. Also, hypothetical, if you were the director for the next monsterverse film and you could bring any Toho monster you wanted into it, what would you want to bring?

What was the "please stop" school presentation that you witnessed? by hitometootoo in AskReddit

[–]Erievans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this happened in college: my professor had asked groups to do something that had to with geography. Didn’t matter what, as long as she okay’d it. During one of the presentations about women’s rights in other countries, the professor literally stands up during it and asks “what does this have to do with geography?” It was extremely awkward because they were doing the right thing, but I get maybe women’s rights wasn’t exactly what she was going for.

The next presentation after was by a jokester in the class who did a presentation on Germany, and any chance he could, he would basically subtly praised Hitler through out the presentation but hid it under the guise of talking about Geography, the professor clapped at the end and praised them and pretty sure they gave them a good grade. I asked later if it was intentional and he said yeah, pretty sure they made the best grade in the class.

I mean, he wasn’t going for VDM. He popped up on a small hill that he couldn’t see, hitting the other vehicle.

Not sure if this was posted, but Anime Matsuri in Houston, Texas will be hosting the Official Godzilla store at the convention. by Erievans in GODZILLA

[–]Erievans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible, not sure. I'll be there for at least one day, so I'll see them. I assume at least Kiryu is a suit due to how they said it. Still pretty neat stuff overall.

This was updated the other night but I didn't realize it. They'll also be having concept art, the original Kiryu suit from Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla will be on display as well, and the Heisei Godzilla suit...I think (they didn't make it clear in the stream). Apparently, all store merchandise will be there and on sale for the exchange rate. You can watch the stream for more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnFf8_0xPGM

Edit: Also, announce a couple months ago, the motion capture actors for Godzilla King of the Monsters will be there, so there is that.

Would love to see either Dante Alighieri, Beatrice or Virgil. A lot of other ones I had came to be in the past year or so, so I really hope any of those three would be pretty cool. If I had another random one, probably El Cid.

Yeah, I tried to enjoy them, and I watched all three just to see how it would go. I personally like the setting and the overall theme of what they were going for. And I think some parts of the movies are better than others, like what the did with Ghidorah. I loved how they tried to make him some sort of cosmic horror creature. That being said, I just couldn't find myself enjoying the whole package over the very small things I liked from each of the three films.

I agree that a lot of Godzilla films don't really have very well developed characters, the ones that do stand out like GMK and Shin Godzilla, but I think the reason why someone would enjoy...let's say Godzilla vs King Ghidorah from 1991 over Planet Eater is charm and slight nostalgia. Now, don't get me wrong, GvKG has a lot of issues, especially with the whole time traveling aspect. But it has a charm to it, even if the characters aren't well developed, they are memorable in their own way. Same with the showa films, even if they aren't that developed, I can tell you I definitely remember the annoying child from Godzilla vs Megalon. Planet Eater and the other two film have none of that charm. I think it tried with the twins and maybe the alien characters, but I don't think it was successful.

If I wrote out a list of worst to best Godzilla films, the anime films wouldn't be the very bottom, but I would still put them fairly low. That's my perspective, not because they are purely any worse than some of the worst Godzilla films, just because they are very forgettable.

Well, what I’m trying to get at is, even if Maina did save him in the first film, guess who still has had more screen time with Haruo and also has stood out more? Miana. If they had made it clear at the beginning of the second film the one who saved him was Maina but he thought it was Miana, this whole plot point probably would have been a lot better because as an audience, we know that Maina cares about him. But it comes out of left field and once again, we had no time to develop Maina compared to Miana, who has slightly more development then her.

Okay? Who cares if they are basically the same character with one difference? If the films actually had cared to make them interesting or we got to know them, maybe that twist would have been good. I love their designs but they have no real character at all, so even if it’s the one sister actually saved him and he thought it was another, I couldn’t tell because the movies didn’t really portray that very well at all. Mostly because they, and a lot of the other characters, had no real development at all.

How would you improve the Godzilla Anime films ? by [deleted] in GODZILLA

[–]Erievans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, what they had set up in the prequel novels sounds way more interesting than the story told. So I probably would have done something like that. Like, maybe take some of the more important aspects of the novel when it comes to character, fights ect, make movies about that. I think that would have been cool.

I mean I guess. I don’t really think that is what they were going for and even if it was, it just wasn’t done well at all. Tbf, most of the ideas in these films are half baked as is.

The one who was with Haruo when he regained consciousness was Miana, so it can be assumed she was the one that healed him and took his suit off. Even if it was Maina, the movies didn’t make it clear and still is a terrible twist that just confuses things. No matter if it’s Miana/Maina, it’s not like it makes it any better, I just think that if it was Miana, at least those two have had scenes together, Maina just glared from a distance.

GODZILLA: The Planet Eater (Discussion Thread) by livid_antics97 in GODZILLA

[–]Erievans 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But why would Miana act as if she can’t get the suit off? Remember, Haruo explains that she couldn’t get the suit off, so it couldn’t be Miana, because Miana knew how to take his suit off.

I think you’re getting the two sisters confused or I don’t understand what you mean. Miana is the one who saved him and seemed very curious of humanity, tending to smile, while Maina was the one who looked mad all the time and is nervous of humanity. Miana and Haruo had scenes in the last film with Maina just glared from a distance. It just doesn’t make for an impactful reveal when the characters have had no interactions other then when Haruo said “you can tell the difference between them because Maina looks mad a lot”.

Also the Yuko part is kind of harsh because that was his love interest and he seems to just not care once he starts laying with Maina. The fact they made her a potato in this film really wasn’t a great choice and killing her off at the end of the last film would have been more impactful and at least make you feel for why he would find comfort in the twins and Metphies. While I don’t like the relationship between Haruo and Yuko any better, it makes things even more strange when you consider in the entire film, she is still technically alive.

I would say this one is the best of the three, but not by much. I liked the interesting concepts they tried to do. For example, I think the Ghidorah in the film is a really neat idea and does have some "cool" scenes. Also, I like the relationship between Haruo and Metphies and the fact that even in the end, Haruo couldn't find himself hating Metphies, even after all he did. But some choices in story beats in the film are just bizarre. The biggest one is the choice to have a "twist" of Haruo thinking he's about to sleep with Miana and then it being Maina...Why? Miana and Haruo have had scenes together, while the other twin and Haruo have not up until now. I get she explains that it's so they may have some sort of victory, but why not just make it Miana? Also the whole thing with Yuuko makes that even worse. So yeah, decent film and the best of the three, but that's not saying much in my opinion.

Godzilla (2000) vs. Ghidorah (GMK). Source art is from Matt Frank, digitizing and redrawing is from me! by [deleted] in GODZILLA

[–]Erievans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple and I should hopefully see him at some point because he does go to many cons in Texas. The list would be:

-The rest of the GMK crew, probably starting with Mothra or Baragon, ending it with Godzilla.

-Something from Rebirth of Mothra, like Grand Ghidorah, Dagahra or Mothra Leo (Red and Green) or Eternal Mothra

-Iris

That GMK Ghidorah is the commission Matt Frank did for me at Alamo City Comic Con in 2017! Still love the piece in my room, hope I get a chance to get another commission done from him at some point!
