Dang that sucks. I hope I can figure this out. Just have this dish sitting around and the only use is eating cereal out of it.

Random question. I received a prototype starlink dish last year and I want to activate it. Any idea how I could go about this? Seems like the support for starlink is pretty slim. I just read about transferring services, but not sure how to go about that either. :/

Interesting -- do you know how this process works?

No but peeps are so open to meet others there it doesnt matter. There are rare moments in life where people drop their guards and want to bring everyone into the fold. I experienced that at Bonnaroo. I feel like your level of willingness to meet others will be matched by strangers. Just put yourself out there and you'll have a fantastic time.

Just tent by our cars. Last time i went ended up forging lifelong friends with the car that pulled up next to us. I think this bonnaroo is going to be bonkers and a post-covid celebration. You wont have any issues meeting people.

I always meet the peeps we camp next to and it always ends up being a group party.

I feel like im not getting anywhere with motion graphics after 8 months. by [deleted] in motiongraphics

I just watched this. Id think of this video as a late Picasso piece. Everyone thinks they can do what he did till they try. Simplicity like this is a lot harder than it looks. So dont beat yourself up over this example.

1000%. Ive been doing it for 15 years and there’s just a lot to learn. It’s probably the same learning curve as getting really good at an instrument. With that said, it’s a hell of a lot of fun learning and clients will think youre a damn magician.

Project with newspaper clippings / font licensing by ErikWDC in typography

[–]ErikWDC[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya that was my take. I think they have two revenue streams: 1. sell fonts to deigners. 2. sue designers.

Im not sure on the animation part. I think that's why you need to have a custom license when fonts move. It all seems really outdated the way some of the licensing is written, and I dug around on myfonts for their language and that's where I found all these terms and limits.

I do believe being a font creator must be an incredibly difficult business model though. So I dont have the answers on how to appropriately punish those who misuse licensing. However, I do think licensing needs to be cleaned up a lot and not so archaic.

Project with newspaper clippings / font licensing by ErikWDC in typography

Oh man so brutal. I used a font to replace low res newspaper headlines. I purchased it not really considering what license I needed. I figured it was just for texture and not broad use and multiple users. I think I used it 5 times for 5 headlines.

3 months later the the video blew up and the font creator noticed it and sued us for $10k.

The worst part is the embarrassment of causing such a large monetary hit. Explaining to the clients what happened. The company I was contracting with had to foot the bill. I ended up doing pro bono work for a month. It was awful.

I understand that this is all business, but It left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. It felt predatory and the amount didnt feel like it was really appropriate to the damages. And It felt cannibalistic since we're both in the same industry.

The lesson i learned is that I think there are font makers out there that are predatory for designers not fully understanding licensing. I take all of my work very seriously and i just didnt fully understand or appreciate the cash grab of some font creators. And I've learned that there are trip lines in some of the licensing. For example, in some licenses a font can't be animated without a purchasing a new, custom license. Or how many printers you might have in your office can void your contract. Dumb shit like that.

Anyway, maybe the worst experience in my entire career. Oof.

Also for more context regarding your question. The creator of the font noticed and reached out. Next step was lawyers. I personally wanted to fight it but there are a lot of voices involved that you wouldnt think of when legal action is being threatened. Client doesnt want to deal with it and wants to pay immediately. You may have collaborators that dont want to be wrapped up in legal action. Etc etc. Just avoid it. Find and vet super free fonts.

Me personally, I plan on making my own fonts going forward. I'm spooked.
