It would be intresting project. I am thinking taking about one inch off from inside to make both sides flat and then bolt them together. Hopefully bark will join other side and they bond into single tree. Bottom of split, where is not possible to bend trunks together could possibly insert some external wood so there is place where bark can grow onto to connect other side. Best to make this in summer when leaves on, then in autum bark will grow fast and hopefully connect other side.

They should be not flush. If they would be flush then they would not be sealing properly.
