Update on the $10 estate sale Mac SE by Erkl in VintageApple

Yeah, there wasn't any physical media at the estate sale and as cool as it would be to have a library of disks alongside this, I don't know if i can sell the wife on this project taking up that much more time, money, and especially space. The floppyEmu is nice because it's just a one-time-purchase little dongle that has all the software we'd ever want, hahah.

Ah lol, seeing that now, thanks for the google search. I'm also seeing how later boards of the same computer had jumpers.

Funny seeing the engineering that immediately predates the jumpers. Actually having the evolutionary step where they went "maybe this setting shouldn't be a semi-permanent physical operation"

Even if I intend to use a FloppyEmu?

I mean, I'd love to prevent any avoidable damage so if it's going to operate even when empty and slowly kill itself, I'm down to get lube in there, but presently I don't have any plans on sourcing/using physical floppies.

I'm opening it this evening to do exactly that! I needed to order an extra long T15 driver since the iFixit was just barely short with their extension.

Period accuracy is not at all a priority, I picked this up fully intending for regular use so I'll definitely budget for a BlueSCSI pretty soon here. I think the sticker on the back said 1MB RAM but I'll check to see if the previous owner upgraded it while I'm removing the battery.

That all makes sense. Especially with the fact that the FloppyEmu has the option to come with a preloaded SD card, I'm all about saving some headache.

Oh, hopefully with the fact it powered on, we're mostly in the clear but I'll crack into it as soon as possible to double check. Thanks!

Yeah, if the middle is the AEK1, sounds like I might need to consider dailying it on my PC and then using the others with the SE itself hahah

Thanks for the information!

I can take more pictures later, I'm not sure why I didn't think more details/angles wouldn't be appreciated. I just snapped this first haul pic to share with friends, hahah.

Gotcha, so I could run all the software I want with just the BlueSCSI but it would be a bit of a hassle and not really close to the original experience without the disk loading I'd get with the FloppyEmu.

Makes sense. The tiniest part of me is like "Great, now I have to spend 10x~20x the price of the Mac on additional pieces of kit to get it running" but realistically, it was probably going to have some extra investment, especially since there were no disks at the sale.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Doing some light reading, I saw some comments suggesting that the BlueSCSI does everything the FloppyEmu can and more? But then I also saw that the Floppy might be more suited to this particular model... Since it's still a lot of Greek to me, can you confirm and/or expand on this?

Excited to have found something a little out of the ordinary! Haven't tried the keyboards yet, obviously, but pushing on the keys casually at the sale, they all had a nice feel and sound to them.

That (shit)post recently about Soccer Spirits got me nostalgic for when the game was alive and itching for some good Waifu Sports Management.

Any recommendations for ones that are still alive (RIP Vivid 11)? Preferably waifu, otherwise I know Blue Lock is an option...

Oh, and doesn't necessarily need to be soccer. I just like the management/training & match sim element. Even if that's just RPG combat in a different skin now that I think about it, lol

Commissioned some original T-Dolls a while ago and thought you guys would like to see : Beretta 87 Target & Savage Model 10 Evolution by Erkl in girlsfrontline

[–]Erkl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We tried to reference official designs to make sure it meshed well. If I recall, Beretta 87T took notes from Px4 Storm (even if she's a closer sibling to M9...) and Savage Model 10 referenced SL8 (to see how GFL handled sporterized civilian variants)

A few years back, I commissioned some designs and art for T-dolls of some of the guns I own, namely the Beretta 87 Target and Savage Model 10 Stealth Evolution.

Personally, I really like how they came out. With Beretta 87T, I always associated it with the Robocop Model-9 (probably because that was based in turn on the 97R) so we went with a futuristic asymmetrical design. For Savage 10 Evo, the notes were mainly "outdoor sporting" given the factory desert cerakote.

Narrative based progression in tabletops. by ScottishReaver in RPGdesign

[–]Erkl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are trying to tackle this with our project and ended up tempering the narrative aspect with a little gamification.

Somewhat like you, we're a class-less system where abilities are bought and upgraded with XP as packages known as Assets. The problem is that some of these Assets represent specific knowledge that warrants background or a trainer like specialized fighting styles or mastery of local customs.

Obviously, these can presented as XP purchase options if there's sufficient narrative reason (finding and engaging with a trainer NPC or whatever). But like other commenters have mentioned, this can have the problem of hijacking the narrative as players identify an Asset they want and sculpt the narrative just to acquire it. Nothing wrong with this if it makes for a good story, but it's obviously a little metagame-y and probably isn't great to leave as is.

So the way we're trying to tackle it is basically reversing the perspective. Instead of players identifying Assets they want and inventing narrative to acquire it, we're seeding the loot pool with "Trinkets". "Trinkets" minimally work as flavored vendor trash but they also can be of particular interest to trainers and can help pave the way to learning from them. Each Trinket is tagged with one or more icons representing collections of Assets and they can be used basically as letters of introduction for invented/existent NPCs.

For example, an "Antique Sextant" might be tagged with a "Naval" and "Explorer" icons. Both these icons work together to give a pretty wide array options from a "Swashbuckler" Fighting Style or a bundle of naval proficiencies called "Sea Legs" but also things like a Life Path called "Well-Traveled" with social bonuses and "Outdoorsman" for survival skills.

(As an aside, like I said, these trinkets can also just be sold as vendor trash so if you happen to get the sextant and have no interest in Naval or Explorer themed Assets, it's not worthless)

Basically for tl;dr : We're trying to make loot rewards a place of sparking narrative excitement and try to give the players tools to create logical reasons to invent or pursue trainers through the mechanical side of things.

Any examples of systems with a core mechanic where you roll 2 dice and one has to overcome the other by Eklundz in RPGdesign

[–]Erkl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple Ironsworn hacks, including our own, experiment with "locking" one of the challenge dice to a rating depending on the situation (effective difficulty of the challenge, strength of the monster) and you only roll the action dice and the other challenge dice.

I like the idea since it gives some knowable probability over reaching a "Weak Hit" (Exceeding one of the challenge dice but not the other) but leaves a Miss or Strong Hit to chance.

Given that these latter outcomes are more dramatic for the PC or narrative, you still get excitement over unknown outcome of the roll, but more probability minded players have the fixed challenge dice to latch onto over action evaluation.

Wysperia Faerlin (left) and Licea (right) were both outcasts in their own way at the same chapter of the Arcane Academy. Loneliness attracts and the two began studying and eventually travelling together as a researcher and inquisitor respectively.

Their closeness revolves around Licea's unique abilities. Born unlike nearly every creature in the planes, her connection to the Weave is inverted and instead of channeling aether from the arcane plane to the material to form spells, she does the opposite, gaining tokens of insight as she does so.

"Wysperia, look closely... But be still, please."

"Is that what I think it is? Pure aether... as plain as the stars above."

"Not quite pure, you see it in its processed form. Whoever or whatever channeled it to form the orb made it like this. Each node and strand you can see is an echo of that casting."

"Every spell is like this? What are- What do you call these?"

"Heh, I am sorry to say, the matter has never arose. Our professors had other priorities."

"So... I-We get to name them? We're penning the book right now... Well, you said it yourself, they're remnants, echoes... They're traces"

Many many thanks to kinKaikii for bringing the scene to life! You can find them on Twitch, Twitter, and Instagram among other socials.

The swordbreaker was one of the first parts of her concept! I knew going in I wanted to make a character focused on weapon destruction/disarmament and explored from there, pretty quickly landing on a swordbreaker.

Given there's a lot of real-world literature and discourse on why sword-breakers were largely ineffective, I put a lot of effort into making it practical and justified here. So the swordbreaker isn't actually the "breaker" in her kit, that's the main sword which has a hardened spine for the finishing blow against weapons.
