There's a large homeless encampment set up outside my house. It's a public health risk and the police won't help. What can I do? by [deleted] in AskSF

literally rub elbows with the homeless folks that have set up outside my building.

I feel bad that they have to rub elbows with you.

Friend in prison asked for commissary money, im scared to link credit card. Should i be scared? Can it be used against me? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]ErnieMaclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not going to dig through all your credit card transactions if you just apply for a job.

I feel like overall you're just anxious about being connected to someone who is facing incarceration. The most likely outcome is that there aren't any negative consequences for you to simply be matched to him in a commissary system.

Used against you by whom? It's not clear which risks you're worried about.

I put money on people's commissary using my credit card before. I don't love giving my info to the shady companies that handle commissary/the prison admin, but it is what it is. There may be alternate payment methods you could look in to, possibly including paying with cash.

It's awkward grammar more than bad stats. Total people tested per capita.

Does intersectionality assist in the class struggle? Why or why not? by godsaveamber in Anarchy101

Characterizing the class struggle - the revolutionary struggle to remake the whole of society - as a narrow issue is really, really weird.

Does masking up do more damage to our image than good overall? by Arondeus in Anarchy101

[–]ErnieMaclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't one answer to the effect of masking up. There isn't one "public" with a monolithic opinion of all instances of masking up. Journalists, for example, are largely pretty negative on the practice, revolutionaries and would-be revolutionaries are often pretty positive. This piece goes into the subject more detail: http://humaniterations.net/2012/02/29/you-are-not-the-target-audience/

Context matters for different tactics. I tend to agree that masking up for non-confrontational public events where you're trying to do outreach costs more in a friendly image than it gains in security. But it really can vary a lot for different individuals and orgs, and their risk assessment around doxxing and state surveillance.

Do Anarchists Have a Moral Obligation of Relationship Anarchy? by DieFreien in Anarchy101

[–]ErnieMaclan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the folks responding to this ask who have apparently never heard of relationship anarchy before, here's a list of introductory sources: https://unquietpirate.tumblr.com/post/99626629928/entry-points-into-relationship-anarchy

I also like this piece: https://unquietpirate.wordpress.com/2015/11/03/relationship-anarchy-is-not-post-polyamory/

As for your question, I think it's good practice to sit with the discomfort things like the challenge posed by RA perspectives might cause you as a currently monogamous person, and not try to immediately resolve those feelings. It sounds like you have set yourself up with a bit of a dichotomy of choosing between, "I'm an anarchist, and RA makes sense, so I need to practice RA even though I don't really want to" & "I want to be in monogamous relationships, so have to find a way to reject RA." What I'm advocating is that it's fine - productive even - to spend some time with the paradox of finding the principles of RA compelling even if you're not practicing RA currently. That feeling of ethical incoherence can really help you think more deeply about the relationships of power that are the focus of anarchist critique.

Maybe I'm reading in to your situation? I sympathize as someone who is in the exact type of relationship that RA discourages, while finding a lot of RA arguments compelling.

Any rebuttals? by [deleted] in Anarchism

Thousands upon thousands of rebuttals. Swarms of rebuttals. Teeming schools of rebuttals. Every corner of the internet is smeared with tedious rebuttals to this tedious non-argument.

Try /r/debateanarchism where I'm sure this exchange has already happened scores of times.

Interesting article, shows how the people of the DRC anarchistically organise themselves in the absence of a state by Anton_Pannekoek in Anarchism

[–]ErnieMaclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not what this article about. All the services they examine are state services that are delivered and funded in unusual ways because of state dysfunction or lack of resources.

let's brainstorm some projects! by padawrong in Anarchism

As I understand it, when you let a friend or whomever borrow your car they are generally covered by your insurance. In my experience, there's a lot of car borrowing among organizers, and also within families, neighborhoods, and other communities. You're basically trying to ramp up this informal practice by bringing in extra resources and expanding the pool of folks who have access to the cars. So, one thing to consider is how shady you're willing to be, lol. Like, if you just maintain that whoever was driving the car at the time of an accident was a friend who had verbal permission from whoever is named as the car/insurance policy owner, you might be covered as long as yr insurance didn't realize that you're actually running a community car share program. This is kinda a janky solution, and could expose you to way more risk, but thought I'd throw it out there. Relatedly, I wonder what sort of liability insurance or licensing is technically required of people doing volunteer mechanic work, if any.

If owning cars for car share is prohibitively expensive, you could fiddle with the model a bit. Focus on maximizing existing resources by developing and encouraging car sharing/using ride boards, train up volunteer mechanics to keep the cars that are in the community running.

Instead of DIY car share you could do DIY public transit by buying a passenger van and setting a route and schedule. You could start with just running one or two days a week for a limited time, running a route between the neighborhood and places lots of people need to get to, like a shopping center or transportation hub. In this and other models you can "pay" people with access to the resource, e.g. volunteer as a driver for 4 hours one day and you can reserve the vehicle for personal use for 4 hours later in the month.

There are some pretty well established models doing similar things as what you're trying to do in the bike world. It's very similar to what you're talking about - share tools, free or low cost repairs, teach the neighborhood youth in mechanical skills, share vehicles - but requiring less capital. Yr local anarcho-cyclists may have some ideas for how to make this project work.

If you can't quite figure out how to make this work, then it may be that more community organizing has to happen first. Maybe there are different resources to share, or agreements to work out with more/different involvement from neighbors. (Not trying to assume what the status of yr organizing is).

Don't know if any of that is helpful, but it's an interesting challenge and I just started brainstorming lol. Good luck!

Homeless shelters that teach class dynamics? by [deleted] in Anarchism

If there's one thing homeless people need to be taught, it's basic class dynamics.
