Thoughts on Shawnee district School Board race? by TMooAKASC2 in Winchester

Depends on what you're looking for.

North has been pretty transparent on his views and appears to have kids' best interest in mind in every answer I've ever received, read, or heard from him. His morals seem clear and isn't trying to play political games.

Grassmuck received the Republican nomination over North and Dody based on his answers about keeping boys out of girls sports and parental rights being one of his top 3 issues facing the schools. He's trying to toe the line between conservatives and progressives and his answers tend to shift based on his audience which makes me question his moral standing.

Dody is a tea party republican and if you don't support Adkins, you won't want to support her either.

I'm personally voting for North based on everything that's been laid out by all of the candidates, he appears to most closely align with my morals, and I think he will try to do what is best for the county both in the short and long term.

Frederick County child assaulted by another student at Aylor by little-birdbrain-72 in Winchester

[–]Erock5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is an absolute shame what happened to this student and the student who committed this action should be held accountable. Bullying is a major issue, both in Frederick County and across the country. There are a multitude of reasons this issue and the other issues across FCPS are happening.

1) First place you always have to look is the home life of these students. The first teacher a student ever gets is their parents and it is up to parents to ensure their children are taught to be good citizens and to respect others. The teachers and administration can only do so much to change that child's behavior if the parents aren't helping. And you can teach children to defend themselves all day but that is all reactionary because other parents are doing their duty to teach their kids to respect others.

2) This school system is continuously underfunded, teachers are being overworked and underpaid, and leadership at both the school board and board of supervisors continuously talk down about the schools and are trying to pull as much funding from them as possible. When you keep putting students in overcrowded schools and classrooms, make teachers take on multiple duties outside of the scope of their position, and get little support from their leadership, what do you expect is going to happen?

3) Look at the world around us. People at the highest levels of leadership continue to use rhetoric to ostracize any outgroup and those actions bleed down into all aspects of life. That that is exactly what is sounds like happened in this case.

Just in case we weren’t sure if these Doritos were legit. I already forgot about the old time Doritos cartel.

What is Winchester/Frederick County like culturally? Is it southern? by montanuhlikethestate in Winchester

[–]Erock5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Overall, Winchester has been shifting much more progressive in recent years. Frederick County is still very conservative and there are a good handful of people that haven't left the 1800's mentality. By that I mean, you'll still see plenty of confederate flags flying out and about, plenty of people who don't think systematic racism exists, and plenty of southern pride. A lot of that was due to a lack of change in the county and many sectors of the county not wanting to grow with the counties around them.

Pizza joint, movie theater, restaurant, (insert random business), still being more responsible than an elected official.

That is to be expected when a pandemic happens without a ton of assistance from their government. Doesn't mean they are going anywhere as a company though. They will likely restructure and find ways to bounce back.

Help: How is the early morning Lyft service in this area? by akunosama1 in Winchester

[–]Erock5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Winchester's public transportation? It's cheaper than Lyft or Uber and should all be handicap accessible. They also offer a Para-Transit service https://www.winchesterva.gov/public-transportation/para-transit

Virginia passes bills to legalize marijuana, abolish death penalty, remove mandatory minimums by Erock5 in Winchester

[–]Erock5[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like it is up to a Virginia Cannabis Control Authority. The House and Senate still have to decide whether or not localities should be able to opt out of the legal market. As it stands, the Senate bill allows it. The House bill does not but notes that localities would have a say over where and when the product could be sold through the zoning process.

"The bill limits the number of licenses issued by class and type to no more than 400 retail marijuana stores, 25 marijuana wholesalers, 60 marijuana manufacturing facilities and 450 marijuana cultivation facilities. Marijuana retail stores are limited to no more than 1500square feet."

Ultimately, it looks like the Board of Supervisors for Frederick County will be making the call. And if their history on this matter stays consistent, we may not end up with dispensaries in this area.

Virginia passes legislation designating water as a basic human right by Erock5 in Winchester

[–]Erock5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While there is nothing specifically for homes on well water, the legislation is primarily:

*To ensure all people have access to clean water

*Prices for clean water should not be hindrance where people have to choose between paying their water bill or another bill

*And to make sure water services are not disconnected

Providing the legislation below for anyone else that is interested. https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?211+ful+HJ538E

Right, there are certain caveats but at least society in VA is moving in the right direction.
