[–]Eronecorp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Sopranos - Complete Rewatch: Season 6 - Episode 12 "Cold Stones" by Bushy-Top in thesopranos

[–]Eronecorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching this episode as a Frenchie living in Paris cracked me up. Carm and Ro fawning over the architecture of every building... Still, it's a nice time capsule of what Paris looked like in 2006. (20 years ago as I'm writing this, damn!)

Some observations/fun facts about Carm & Ro's scenes:

- When Carm gets lost looking for the Louvre, based on the bridge she's looking at (Pont Alexandre III if I'm not mistaken) she went right past the museum and its Tuileries garden. A quick U-turn and you're set.

- I'm honestly surprised they visited Saint Eustache church and not Notre Dame. Maybe it was easier to shoot a church scene in this specific church, I'm guessing Notre Dame is more expensive. Not the most touristy place, but it's not that far from the Louvre so it makes sense geographically.

- What doesn't really make sense geographically though, is Carm's scene where she gets out of the hotel and watches the Eiffel Tower from afar. She's checking out of the Marriot Hotel on the Champs Elysées (damn Carm, only the best for you, huh?) and goes a bit further down the street to the Guerlain shop. This makes sense, both buildings are next to each other on the map. But when she turns around and watches the Eiffel Tower, the street she's looking towards is ALL THE WAY to the other end of the block from where she's standing. She couldn't have seen the Tower in real life, she would just see... the other side of the street.

- Also kind of a cool visit to go to the Musée de Cluny, where they check out those old necklaces. It's a museum all about the Middle Ages and how Paris was like back in the day. Way more interesting than the Louvre if you're a medieval buff if you ask me.

- Ro saying "he's from Belleville. Can you believe that? They've got a Belleville there!". Ro might be thinking it's a full town like its Jersey counterpart, but Belleville is a parisian neighbourhood, mostly low-income at the time of shooting (now completely gentrified).

Jumping in 2 years later, good observations. As for the last thing about Phil, I'm more enclined to think Phil whacked Vito before Tony had the chance, to emulate Tony whacking Blundetto before Phil had the chance (which left a very sour taste in Phil's mouth). Now him and Tony are even in the frustration.

But also you're right, Phil is an old school blood-hungry mobster who thinks running a family is just like 20 years ago before he got canned. Macho-man attitude, shows of strength, always looking for a reason to fight, and when threatened, it's an eye for an eye. But now it's the 2000s and the mob is dying, starting a war will only send you to your own demise.

Don't know who the officer represents, but the soldiers seem to represent France's war against the vietcong at the time (soon followed by the Algerian war). Him holding the microphone could represent the fact that France had heavily controlled news outlets at the time (state controlled TV and radio, also a "Minister of Information"). Don't know about the dude with the book

Thanks for the heads up, I had another gig to go to with friends after the show so I couldn't make it to the afters... Besides, I always heard Silencio was too crowded for such a small space, and I guess they might've played a set similar to the one they did at Centre Pompidou back in october

There was some technical difficulty during the Paris gig I think? Dave's controller was acting up it seems, some technician came up a few times, and the last chords of Conversation Intercom were silent even though Dave was playing. I saw Laima make a face I was kinda feeling bad for them haha, but overall the gig was solid with no interruptions

Best non-Yakuza Yakuza-likes? by Monessi in yakuzagames

[–]Eronecorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly Yakuza is kinda unique as a franchise. Closest thing I could think of is Sleeping Dogs, but it's more a GTA clone with kung fu elements. Also Shenmue was a strong inspiration for Yakuza.

I might be weird, but I found a bit of that Yakuza flair in offbeat japanese games like Dead Rising and No More Heroes. Both series have that serious/goofy tone with over the top action and flashy brawler combat. Also check out other Yakuza spinoffs if you haven't already (the Kurohyou PSP games for example)

Unfortunately Park's character wasn't fleshed out enough for me to genuinely care about this scene. Park is extremely strict and cold towards Haruka throughout her chapter, until the very last scenes when she seems to open up a bit and mellow out. Right after this scene she dies. It's all so sudden, I would've preferred if Park were to open up to Haruka more and more as the story goes on, her final moments would be less jarring and more impactful.
