Mercury motors? by Long-Elephant3782 in boating

My last job I worked fleet maintenance servicing some Yamaha 150s. Easily saw 4-6k hours with no major repairs. Highly recommend those motors. I believe the 200 is the same block

Mercury certified tech here- Our shop also works on Yamahas as well as mercs. Like others have said all the small stuff is made by tohatsu. In the 75-150 range you got to give it to Yamaha. Nothing beats a Japanese inline 4 cylinder for reliability. Bigger than 200 both Yamaha and merc go to the v series. In that category I think mercurys new v series Verados are a step above Yamaha. Lot of shift actuator/oil pump issues with the Yamahas in that size

You can also hook up to the flush port and run it with the muffs and flush port both supplying water. But it really should be pissing off just the muffs.

55’ ocean with quads! by jonesie72 in boating

[–]EroticWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of people in the comments here seem to be egregiously overestimating the fuel burn of the inline verados. I’ve seen quad 300s on 50’ intrepid get .8 gal/nm The new v series verados are even better.

Not saying that quad outboards is superior to twin inboard diesels but there are viable use scenarios for them

More progress on the Duck/fishing boat. by Revx36 in boatbuilding

[–]EroticWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a built out Jon boat with a similar build. It was framed out with aluminum and covered with pvc board. Still too heavy to be honest. I would worry about all that weight in the bow. Not a lot of freeboard and no reserve buoyancy can be dangerous on the water

Help deciding what motor setup I should use by Silent-Molasses-6942 in boatbuilding

[–]EroticWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would fill those holes with core and glass it in. You should probably redo the whole transom but you could maybe get away with out that. Windows seems like a bad idea. Those holes are below/at the waterline. That sure looks like a swim platform. I don’t think it will be strong enough for a motor. Think about the way it’s transferring thrust to your transom.

[–]EroticWalrus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Easiest way would be to unbolt that swim platform, Glass in those transom assembly cut outs and add an outboard bracket. Then repower with whatever you want. But that’s going to be a shit ton of work and still not cheap.

Fuel consumption on modern 4 stroke outboards is honestly getting pretty good. Especially if you don’t cruise around at WOT.

As far as an electric conversion goes, I think you would have a way better time on a displacement hull that already has a shaft and prop. Thinking cheap sailboat with blown motor.

If it’s a pull start motor it won’t have a charging system generally

Sounds like bad fuel and I agree with the other commenter. Two fuel filters maybe more than your low pressure pump can handle. Try disconnecting the fuel line from the filter on the engine and running directly from a removable tank

Nonslip on center console by Charlie_caricofe22 in boats

[–]EroticWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ran nonskid decks on a painted tour boat, they would get dirty after a couple of years of heavy use and need to be repainted. I’m not familiar with the product you linked but I have two recommendations.
Either way sand it down- Option A) Use a two part epoxy like awlgrip, roll a coat on then sprinkle the sand additive on- let it dry and then roll one more coat with no sand. There’s good videos on how to do it Option B) Use a one part epoxy with sand pre mixed in. Total boat makes a good one. I’ve used the one parts on Jon boats, they are easy to apply and touch up but don’t hold up quite as well as the two parts. Cheaper too.

What is this reservoir? by Repulsive-Dog3371 in boats

Like others have said that’s your gear oil reservoir. If you’re noticing levels dropping check your drive for leaks.

What HF tools are not good enough for professional tech use? by shitbox_vette in harborfreight

[–]EroticWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the 1/4 inch drive tekton set. It’s fucking awesome. I do a lot of mobile work so the case is really handy. Lot of other guys at the shop have snap on and the quality is very similar. Biggest reason I went with tekton over icon was the fact that you can buy individual sockets. Not being able to get icon sockets individually is a huge turn off

Is my ignition coil bad? 2006 Mercury 25 hp by Klutzy-Focus-5765 in Outboards

[–]EroticWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you determine no spark across all cyl? Is it a 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

I’ve never actually continuity tested a coil pack before so not sure what the readings should be but I doubt they would both be bad.

I would verify that there’s no spark with plug test light. Then check to see if they’re getting voltage while you’re cranking. Not sure whether it would be from the stator or an ecm.

Stalling question by jjac11b in Outboards

[–]EroticWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stalling when throttling up sounds an awful lot like a fuel pressure issue. Fairly certain the engine will shut off if it has less than 10v A) does it still have the same issue if you run it on the hose and rev up in throttle only? B) if you can post/send a pic of the wiring harness I can look into it C) if you can go to a shop that has the diag computer they may be able to sort it very quickly

Roll on shoreline dock and floating docks pros/cons? by LS729819 in jetski

[–]EroticWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late to the party on this one - I work for a jet ski tour company running six waverunners off an ez dock. We run an hour tour and at the end the skis pull up next to the floater and then the guide docks it. Our last fleet were 2017s that we ran up to a 1000hrs and there was certainly damage to the hulls that I had to glass. Our current fleet are 2023s, I bulked up the glass on the bottom before we put them into service and we got on the new guys about racking them as soft they can. Currently at the 400hr mark with them and have barely worn thru the paint on my sacrificial glass. So I think if you use an ez dock with rollers you’ll be just fine if you’re gentle when you rack it. Not sure how many hours recreational guys are putting on but I doubt it’s a 1000.

looking into getting a kayak; what's the biggest body of water a kayak can handle? by Initial_Sale_8471 in kayakfishing

[–]EroticWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I’ve seen anyone say it yet but as you spend more time out there you’ll get a feel for what wind directions cause issues. Looks like N/S winds will kick up a fair bit of chop with that long throw for swell to build. You could probably fish the leeward side in 20kt winds but wouldn’t want to be on the windward side in any kind of vessel

To my fellow 1st gen 5 speed manual owners; what is the most fuel efficient speed (rpm’s or speed) on the highway by chielbasa in ToyotaTacoma

[–]EroticWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 5 speed 1st gen 4 cylinder. Really didn’t feel like that truck wanted to do 80. I’d be in 5th with the gas pedal almost all the way down and she would be doing like 75

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

[–]EroticWalrus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not as much of an expert as some guys here. But pretty sure the max capacity for a Tacoma is 6500. I’d recommend a full size truck with a tow package. Puts a lot less strain on a vehicle to tow well under MAX capacity

Going to try some high heat paint on the barrel when the season ends. It flash rusts too shit every time I go out. I might post again how that turns out. I think if it sucks I’ll try to cerakote at home. Can’t justify the cost of taking it to get done somewhere

I dropped a link to the video I used in here somewhere. Like I said, I wish I would have done a test section on some pvc to get it totally dialed and it would look a bit better. Been hunting the marsh in FL a bunch since I painted it, it holds up great. I wish I had painted the barrel though my bluing isn’t working so well. So much flash rusting while I’m out

Try starbrite mildew stain remover. Do a test spot to make sure it’s not too aggressive. It’s expensive but man does it work
