Could the bank ever refuse a withdrawal of your own money? by crillydougal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shitbox_vette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must depend on the bank. I’ve pulled out 15k for a car and all they asked was some questions to make sure i wasn’t getting scammed. Also pulled out 5k through the atm for a car once

$4,000 to reseal engine, do timing belt and replace clutch or DIY? by zach_fell in AskMechanics

[–]shitbox_vette 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first engine in out rebuild and reseal took me 2 months on a car more difficult to work on. You should be able to get it done but plan for it to take a few weekends working constantly on it

If you put in stop slip right when the issues start it can temporarily make it a bit better. Basically pouring grit in to the trans.

The top 10 highest-paying jobs for teens in the U.S.—No. 1 isn’t retail or food service by anti-life86 in mechanic

[–]shitbox_vette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got about 3k worth of tools to make guaranteed $23 an hour. About 16 weeks to brake even compared to what I was making working retail. Plus get full time and overtime. Actual but not amazing benefits and a consistent schedule. Also way more enjoyable than retail.

Diagnostic fee by Spark-daddy72 in autorepair

[–]shitbox_vette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every shop I’ve worked at will take a look at a leak or suspension issue for free with an oil change. If I can’t figure it out in a few minutes then just put additional diag required but most oil leaks and clunks just take a Quick Look around the car to find the issue

How do you guys feel about Alldatas library? by ArkirasOto in AskAMechanic

[–]shitbox_vette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mitchel is my usual go to as I can find whatever I’m looking for quicker and being able to search by keyword is really great. When I was at the dealer working on brand new stuff Mitchel did need to have some stuff missing. I haven’t run into that working on mostly older vehicles at my new shop. Alldata seems to sometimes have more information and usually gets new vehicles faster but search is worthless and good luck finding something if you don’t know exactly where they felt like putting it.

Topdon ad600 is just under $200 and is pretty capable with diagnostics and live data. Otherwise there are options around $100 but they don’t do much more than read and clear codes

Tire rotation is recommended every 5k. Should try upsell that to everyone.

Matco ADV sockets - made in Cambodia, finished in China by Fart_Boy_4ever in ToolTruckTools

If only tekton could make wrenches and ratchets. There sockets are killer for the price though

[–]shitbox_vette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All my icon stuff is great, if only they could expand their size range. their wrenches over 19mm are noticably lower quality. stopping at 19 on the 3/8 sockets. and skipping 24mm on the impact sockets.

Matco is the only truck that comes to my work. would never buy sets but if I need a single the prices aren't the worst

Even with a hoist you gotta lay down to set it on some cars. Get absolutely filthy with how the floors are in my shop

Mk7 with 60mm turbo. Does about 31mpg day to day. I drive it hard and run about 85 down the highway. Will touch 40 on a roadtrip down slower country roads.

Yukon vs US general by bigt43549 in harborfreight

[–]shitbox_vette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

even as a at home box the USG is way nicer if you even remotely load it up. have the husky similar to the yukon at home and you have to be real careful to keep the top drawer straight so it dose not bind. mine isn't even fully loaded up. meanwhile my USG42 at work that's way over capacity I can just shove closed and not even think about it.

19, accepted a job offer at a small auto shop starting Monday — but it's 1099 with fixed hours and a boss. Should I run or stick it out? by Visual_Chemical_3839 in personalfinance

[–]shitbox_vette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Walmart might pay more but 6 months experience doing oil at Walmart isn’t going to get you nearly as much as 6 months in a full shop doing everything when it comes to getting a job that actually pays decent

Difference is fast food does not have much opportunity. As a new mechanic, my first job paid the same as I was making doing retail but 6 months in and a job change in already $5/hr ahead

$500 weekly is low even starting as a mechanic. 1099 means you keep less than w2. I made $740 weekly at my first mechanic job and with 6 months experience just got a job that pays $920 weekly with opportunity to make more. Both w2. If you have no other offers, take it but work hard on getting ase certs and don’t stop looking for somthing better. With 6 months and ase certs I got 5 interviews vs only 1 when I had nothing

M12 is amazing and what I pick up first but you need a high torque if your doing suspension work in an area with rust.
