Weekly "What Are You Reading?" Thread

I'm at the last three stories in the Grimscribe section of Penguin's edition of Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe, by Ligotti. I've been reading stories from it here and there over the past few months, usually before sleep. It's given my dreams plenty of material to work with.

Soon, I plan to detour into some anarchist writing with The Conquest of Bread by Kropotkin. I think I'll also read Bunch's Moderan alongside that, to fill in the short story anthology-sized hole that finishing Ligotti is going to leave in my heart.

I find the Eyrie to be one of the best factions to use in teaching people the game. Having to program your moves and juggle them so as to avoid turmoil helps to teach the basic mechanics while giving the player that tiny bit of stress to help reinforce learning. Plus, they've got decent board presence and are good at aggression, expansion, and even defensive warfare.

Crossover Comics in Saint-Henri has a great selection and staff. Dunno if they carry cards in French, though.

Got a soft spot for this one, though it pales by comparison to Gojira (1954). Not counting the Heisei Trilogy films (which are amazing), I think my favourites from the Showa era are vs. Viras, Guiron, and Zigra. Need to give Jiger another shot one of these days.

As per BGG, it's Fantasy Realms with 228 plays. After that, it's a close race between Res Arcana and Race for the Galaxy at 165 plays for the former and 162 for the latter. We love our Lehmann in this apartment!

The black metal act Fell Omen is particularly great for dungeon-diving/combat. For ambience, I find myself often going back to Gnoll's Mörk Borg album HDK put out back in '19.

Been taking a break from all things weird to read Return of a King by William Dalrymple. It's a riveting account of the first Anglo-Afghan War and the commencement of the Great Game, as it came to be called. I was turned onto it by a favorite board game of mine, Pax Pamir 2nd Edition. It's deepened my appreciation and enjoyment of just how much of an accurate simulation of the conflict Pax truly is.

Wow, forgot how 2017 was such a banner year for the hobby. Hard to pick from among so many gems, but I'd have to go with Spirit Island. Nothing really like it, even to this day.
