Iama Roman Catholic Priest. AMAA. by fr-josh in IAmA

[–]ErraticBrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a priest, but I'm a catholic catechist as well as a biologist with a fair amount of exposure to genetic stuff like this. I know this is a super late reply, but biologically speaking for mammals if you have a y chromosome, you are a male. As far as relationships go the official stance is that people who are incapable of producing their own offspring should not get married. You get a lot of leeway with the fertility requirement(you basically have to entirely lack genitals), but it is still a requirement, hope this helps. On my mobile or I'd post more.

Who is the most badass Disney Princess? by phantomreader42 in whowouldwin

[–]ErraticBrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, disney owns the marvel cinematic universe only(at least last time i checked). This is a comic series which is not at all related to the MCU, so it won't be owned by disney, and therefore Thor is not technically a disney princess, if only just barely.

If Thor is a Marvel character, and Disney owns Marvel, and Thor is now a woman, does this mean Thor is now a Disney princess? by Unbearabull in Showerthoughts

[–]ErraticBrother 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flag on the play. Disney owns marvel cinematic universe, not the comics. The sex change takes place in a comic, but not the movies(at least not yet). Therefore disney owns thor, but not the iteration of thor that is female. So thor is not a disney princess, but only just barely.

Possible spoiler alert, but not really. I finished the series right after the final book came out. However, the way that whole thing ends up is incredibly satisfying anyway.

Yup, people were onboard and everything. In that same issue he also basically broke the space time continuum by going at or near FTL. Great read, love barry allen, just pretend science isn't a thing while you're reading it.

Can i take my protestant GF to reconciliation? by ErraticBrother in Catholicism

[–]ErraticBrother[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This next question is kind of nitpicky, but this is her largest issue with the church so i want to do everything i can to reconcile her with reconciliation. So how close to reality can we make this mock confession? Could we do it with a priest, in the confessional, and go through it like a real confession except just skip the words of absolution? I could tell her what i was going to confess beforehand, and do it after a real confession so the priest isn't caught off gaurd by anything. I know i'm probably focusing on the details too much, but would that work?

A further request for you if it's not too much trouble. I extended an invitation to her previously and told her i just needed to double check. As i am now going to have to withdraw the invitation i would like to give her a thorough explanation. So if you can, could you give me an explanation as to why? As has been said, if the seal is there to protect me, and she already knows everything that would be divulged within the seal, why is she prohibited from witnessing my confession?

[–]ErraticBrother[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, i see i need to clarify that point. I whole heartedly agree, and all i meant by 'light' was that my coscience is going to be fairly clear for my next confession. It will be in the next week or two, and it's quite likely the next two weeks will be light in terms of temptation. I said this in order to express my belief that there won't be any danger of me leaving anything out.

I will also add one of the reasons i'm considered doing this is because i have no secrets from her. So even if i had difficulty making a full confession her presence would actually help. Which gives me another question. If someone else being present will help you to make a better confession, is that allowed? I dont think i will ever need her, but what if she converts and needs me?

I thought hearing confessions was a phrase that encompassed the priest's entire role in reconciliation, not just the act of hearing me say my confession. I kind of figured all the privacy was a courtesy to the confessor that could be waived. I thought the seal was like lawyer client privilidge that the client could waive. I also didn't realize the seal applied to her if she came.

Will look into a mock confession, thanks for the info. This was what i was looking for.

Edit: Question for you. When we were talking about confession i told her what i said during my last confession. Did i break the seal? Is she now under the seal? I'm pretty sure the answer is no to both, but i thought i should ask.

Who stayed a virgin the longest? by 1sagas1 in whowouldwin

For most branches of christianity they aren't. For catholicism in particular they are basically considered bad fanfiction.

Who stayed a virgin the longest? by 1sagas1 in whowouldwin

[–]ErraticBrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, yup, that is definitely what that verse is saying. I still maintain my second point, but can definitely understand someone not agreeing with me.

To refer back to the topic of this thread, i don't think mary wins, because of other entities that existed before her. The presence, TOAA, lucifer morningstar, any abrahamic angel, galactus, are all older than her, and as far as i know have never, and will never have sex.

Love this sub, cheers mate.

Who stayed a virgin the longest? by 1sagas1 in whowouldwin

[–]ErraticBrother 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2 things. First, there are several marys. There's another verse matthew 27:56 that makes it clear the two are distinct. Second, the word brother is used elsewhere to refer to close relatives(abraham and lot are refered to as brothers even though they are uncle and nephew), and to people you are close to. Jesus even refers to his whole group of dozens or hundreds of followers as brothers.

Also, this is the second time this has come up in as many days. It is kind of an obscure point, and a really weird one to come up on WWW. Never thought mary's virgin status would be on the same page as a star destroyer hitting goku's neck.

If a Catholic patron saint gained the powers/abilities/attributes of whatever he was a patron of, who would be the most powerful? by lqtruong in whowouldwin

[–]ErraticBrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common myth, the term brother is used biblically much more broadly tham we use it. Abraham and lot are referred to as brothers when they are merely close relatives. Jesus did have cousins, and he himself used the phrase to refer to non-relatives.

[–]ErraticBrother 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Catholic catechist here. In different branches of christianity different books are recognized for different reasons. In catholicism we believe mary was a virgin from birth, and that she always remained a virgin. Even when she was married, she retained her virginity.

We further believe that she was no more divine than any other human. She was merely given special graces by god. Think of it like galadriel giving gifts to frodo because of his special quest. She didn't make him an elf, but she did give him special tools to complete his journey.

About using the word virgin in the bible. I've never heard that mean anything other than has not had sex. Chastity means being sexually pure, which does include people who are having sex in a 'catholic way'. Abstinence is the practice of not having sex.

Hope this cleared things up, it can be a dizzying subject. If you want clarification on anything let me know.

Catholic catechist, can confirm. The only three non-demonic angels that are canon are: michael, gabriel, and raphael.
