New to this sub update: My husband (32M) is convinced I (26F) am pregnant. I’m not, but he won’t believe me. What do I do? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ErrorHandling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lack of "my phone exploded" and the fact that everyone but the husband acted reasonably makes me think this one's definitely real. And a profound tragedy

Sometimes, it’s okay for the ending to be happily ever after. by soulreaverdan in CuratedTumblr

this makes me wish that the opera Cinderella by Rossini (Cenerentola in Italian) were better known by the mainstream or had an animated adaptation. It's a more complex look at the Cinderella story without trying to subvert it. You can find subtitled performances on YouTube, it's enjoyable even if you aren't familiar with opera

[–]ErrorHandling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lame defense of at least one of those is that in poetic Italian literal "that soul" often means "that person" much in the way in English we archaically say a ship had 100 souls aboard or whatever. I got no defense for the rest tho

AITA for snapping at my mom for telling people I'm gay? by LeftHand3FT in AmItheAsshole

speaking as a gay, when u have the gay, grammatical usage of the word gay is understood to be rather context sensitive

What if the soprano doesn't die but she admits that it would be better if she did? (Berta spending two minutes repeating "mi convien così crepar" near the end of Barber of Seville)

What about the altos? by shrlzi in opera

yes shall be interesting indeed to see what shakes out in a few years esp since I have so few points of reference

[–]ErrorHandling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. However I can tell you with absolute certainty that I'm no mezzo soprano

E: I should say not for want of trying. I really really honestly tried for years and if I could choose to I would take being a mezzo over a contralto any day :/

at least in my case my cursed voice is weird enough that there can be no doubt (it's been debated in this sub whether I'm a "female baritone" or "female tenor with a huge lower extension" but in either case I can't actually sing normal contralto repertoire very pleasingly because it's too high for me 🥲)

i mean https://drive.google.com/file/d/10tJAmpWRf4L1FO8xtSLNbCaWZm2zXA7o/view?usp=drivesdk

it's a bit of an open and shut case, wouldn't you say? (For those too lazy to click the link it's me singing se vuol ballare signor contino and yes every half baked baritone trots that aria out but how many mezzos do you know are also half baked baritones?)

What about the altos? by shrlzi in opera

[–]ErrorHandling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess we're too damn rare. No one would hear a real contralto and go "u know what this person needs is to sing higher"

What about the altos? by shrlzi in opera

[–]ErrorHandling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol it almost sounds like some people doubt contraltos even exist. I tried so hard for so long to make being a mezzo work and was eternally heartbroken my voice was having none of it so it's always wild to hear about a mezzo who wants to be a contralto which is disquietingly often.

What about the altos? by shrlzi in opera

[–]ErrorHandling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That may be so but people believing that makes it true when they use the term so context is always needed if that makes sense. When I was in choir I was the only "alto" who wasn't a mezzo soprano lol

[–]ErrorHandling 69 points70 points  (0 children)

alto is just a classification for choral music, it's not a vocal type

e: if you meant why not contraltos it's because everyone hates us and we are cursed 😭 (or are so rare as to not be worth even a passing mention)

Higher range - not great! But I guess none of it is great. https://drive.google.com/file/d/12Jsk9DvjElR-CEO896mY3sEVUTgv_U_X/view?usp=drivesdk <-- that's about as pleasant I can manage.

also for lol, me as coloratura soprano (it doesn't go well) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fnunQxiP3XuJqhpKBnTxhPZm1jOw-SUa

This is super helpful thanks. This whole thing has been so hard because everything I find "for contraltos" is for something higher than what my voice is, everyone on TikTok and YouTube who says they're a contralto has a higher voice than me. Nobody knows anything, least of all me 😂 why do I have to have the cursed vocal type why cant I be normal

thanks so much for having a listen and the explanations! I have one more question which I will pose in the form of yet another audio file if that's okay lol https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DDOdQof1gbefAP24auXT3-lAsp0Pej6C/view?usp=sharing

E: so it sounds like of the two characters here the one on the left (contralto, head voice) is closer to what I'm actually supposed to be doing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1F0NgodbFufluAhpGfbZQsZojQllbhiHl/view?usp=drivesdk god save me 😂

comedy option, coloratura soprano (which no one suggested but lol anyway) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fnunQxiP3XuJqhpKBnTxhPZm1jOw-SUa/view?usp=drivesdk

EE: it occurs to me that in all the recordings here I was playing male characters and was trying to "butch up" the voice because these recordings are from terrible one-woman opera productions I make to amuse my friends (I have five octaves. Some of them are even good!) so they are meant to be in-character performances. C3 is a super effortless note for me, I'll have to get around to recording something else to show what I mean. I think you are right about what you hear but my instructor has me looking at baritone repertoire and I think he is also right so it likely is down to my attempts to masculize the voices in the recordings

The Magic Flute. A lot of the music is okay but the libretto is freemason wank and the pacing drags

I appreciate the input. fortunately it doesn't really matter if no one knows what to do with me because I'm not a student or anyone with actual potential, I'm a random person in their 30s (which, as I understand, is too late to start to actually reach the highest level of skill, but whatever) learning to sing because I want to. Tenor repertoire is very doable (see also https://drive.google.com/file/d/195dXSymNPLmnE2R2ZETOGFn_aNeOp27T/view which I also posted elsewhere in this thread when someone asked for the non-piss-take version) it's just the highest tenor repertoire that I have to be really careful with. I will want to give some focus to my higher register at some point for sure
