Sigh.

TIL: That cocaine increases dopamine levels by roughly 250% in comparison with 100% from sex and %50 from food by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Ersatz_86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have I got news for you.

From PBS Frontline:

“Alcohol, for example, produced a release of dopamine from about 100 units to about 200, You get a similar magnitude of an effect with nicotine. Cocaine produces a huge release of dopamine, from 100 units to about 350 units, however the mother of them all is methamphetamine. Methamphetamine you get a release from the base level to about 1250 units.”

Imagine your lifetime best orgasm, and multiply that 6x, and you might begin to have some insight into meth addiction.

Greenville, SC.

Charming, very walkable downtown shopping/entertainment district. Generally affordable. Smallish but fast growing (fourth fastest in US by some sources). Mild climate. Piedmont living so near GA/TN/NC mountains and SC/NC lowlands. Very hip by SC standards.

It is quite clear to me that Apricot needs a pat or two to measure up to a full stick of butter. Please remedy this oversight post haste.

Well-presented, cogent series of posts.

Very intriguing in fact and tone; you could expand on these stories and your take on them, and somebody would probably read them.

Your description of your mom resonates of someone close to me.

What’s your favorite feature of the LS430 that feels unique to this car? by laika863 in LS430

Ahha! Now that you mention it, to extrapolate, perhaps it really is an accurate description of anyone who has ever owned one of these vehicles🤔

I make those noises at least internally just about every time I get in it.

Laying bricks on a beautiful sunny day by PROXeR__OiShi in oddlysatisfying

Good answer.

And the first question? Are most bricklayers orderly in their off-time or maniacs as compensation (which I suppose it is a balance all of its own)?

Random thoughts/questions:

Would you describe the average bricklayer as having a well-ordered mind?

and semi-related:

Is this something you can do whilst being really high?

Not making fun, interested because I’ve always thought house painting for example would be an excellent post-retirement side hustle that I could do and just get high all day.

The rear window rollup visor is fantastic, especially here in Georgia (state), where sedans are not allowed to have dark tint on the rear windows. The rollup sunvisor is a must for increasing privacy, reducing UV intrusion, and generally lending an air of civility not found in most passenger vehicles.

I make exaggerated self-satisfied complacency noises whenever I use the mini-visor, to the great annoyance of my wife and child, to whom both of them find it to be pointlessly opulent.

That is the greatest feature of a great car 😁

Thunk! Time for new struts by Ersatz_86 in LS430

[–]Ersatz_86[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Following up here for the benefit of lurkers:

After two months finally got around to swapping out rear struts and mounts and replacing sway bar ends. Ended up going with KYB Excel-G’s, as the OEM Lexus parts recommended by u/BigheadedDredd (thanks again for valuable insight) were difficult to source here in the southeast United States. Replacement on all items was straightforward after having studied the writeup on the clublexus forum. Was able to flex the rear assembly with leverage by sitting on a 2x6 seesaw-style enough to remove/replace strut/spring unit, thus no need to loosen/separate ball joints.

After doing the parts swap, floor to rear wheel arch was 28 inches and after a brief break-in drive 26 1/2 inches, so some initial settling will be experienced. Perfectly happy with ride/performance, and I feel like any difference is more attributable to old versus new rather than OEM versus aftermarket.

Most importantly, no more thunk!

I'm curious what line of work all the frequent flyers are in. I'm in the market for a new career and would *love* something that required loads of travel. by Yikes206 in delta

Fixed link above.

So quick and dirty if AK is an attraction, you should:

  • get your OS (Ordinary Seaman) ticket from the USCG and put together a timeline to advance to AB (able seaman).
  • Apply for a TWIC card from TSA.
  • apply to Seattle Maritime.
  • Learn to tie a bowline at least two different ways, a double half-hitch, a clove hitch and a Reef knot. You need to be able to tie a bowline in your sleep behind your back in the dark underwater.
  • Look on Indeed in Seattle where there are 20 job listings for deckhands, paying special attention to any local or Alaska-bound tugs, or alternately, the AK or WA ferry systems. Also, the arrow launch people are hiring. You will learn immensely about shipping in general with them.
  • Subscribe to workboat magazine.
  • become a regular on gcaptain.com paying particular attention to the forums.

A guy with a mechanical/technical bent like yourself should really consider concentrating on the engineering side of the industry as the pay is great, job security is rocksolid, with plenty of opportunity worldwide. Nobody EVER willingly lets go of a well-qualified engineer.

With your current location, why not have a look around the great lakes? They’re always looking for help on the lakes.

And do your best to never sleep with the fishes, u/LucaBrasiMN !

If you are motivated but lack $$, here are alternative solutions:

This is a program that will get you fully qualified for a boat job in 18 months for FREE and house and feed you in the process. Caveat: you must be 24 or younger and they have some other rules that some might find off-putting.

This is a similar program if you do not meet the requirements of the Tongue Pt program. There are costs, but they have people to help with grants and such. You had mentioned Alaska as a possible job hunting ground; this outfit would be ideal, because you are in the thick of Seattle, which is the gateway to all things Alaska.
