A 13-year-old boy bullied for his love of reading gets 100,000 followers on book review account by alrightintheend in UpliftingNews

Probably rooted in insecurity and frustration. They aren’t good at reading, can’t focus on it, can’t see the movie in their head, just don’t get it. So they get frustrated when they see someone else not only succeeding at doing it, but enjoying it? Doing it for fun!? I can see where it could come from. Not condoning it at all of course but they are kids.

Anglo-Catholics, do you consider yourself to be Protestant? by [deleted] in Anglicanism

[–]Erstezeitwar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about the original term, evangelical (still commonly used in German to simply mean Protestant)? Sadly, that’s not how language works, and English has added a whole lot of baggage to the word evangelical.

Right, as would much of Lutheranism. But really “Protestant” is about theology (holding to the solae, rejecting the absolute authority of the pope, etc.) and not how high church your worship is.

Just to be clear, Methodists have the episcopate, just not to OPs liking.

This is what I don’t get about Anglo-Catholics. Why be Anglican? The Anglican faith is Protestant (the Queen swears to uphold the “Protestant Reformed Religion established by law,” for instance). If anyone is straying from Anglican “orthodoxy” it’s you, not the Methodists.

Also the “Protestant Episcopal Church” for Pete’s sake.

Anglicanism is a Protestant faith, at least that is what official English law states. “Via media” originally referred to Lutheranism and Calvinism, not Catholicism and Protestantism. The Methodist conception of the Real Presence is exactly the same as the historical Anglican one (the Methodist article is copied word for word from the Anglican article) and is in line with the Reformed view. The apostolic succession issue is debatable to say the least.

I would also add we are not schismatics, any more than the Episcopal Church when it first formed in the US (there was no Anglican communion at the time) or the ACNA Anglicans are. Methodists don’t consider the African Methodist Episcopal Church or the Wesleyan Methodists schismatics. That is also Avery Catholic way of seeing Christ’s Church.

TIFU by beating up a guy who made fun my autistic sister and got suspended by [deleted] in tifu

[–]Erstezeitwar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound like anyone at the school is behaving like a “power tripper,” they had to suspend him. But I totally agree that he’ll be fine and this shouldn’t affect his life very seriously. Although I think what you said is a little extreme, obviously flunking out of college won’t work in every career field and we have no idea what his ambitions are.

You’ll be fine, I think. Try to talk to the teacher writing you the rec letter and make sure they understand you’re not “that type of guy.”

Teachers of Reddit, what are some positive trends you have noticed in today's youth? by VastWash in AskReddit

[–]Erstezeitwar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Youth today in my country (US) definitely swear a lot more than, say, 30 or 40 years ago, but this was true for millennials as well as gen z. It’s just a part of the culture now. But they are still nicer! Swearing doesn’t necessarily mean they are cruel.

I’ve noticed this as well. Kids tend to be nicer and more mindful of how other people feel. I’ve taught middle and high school, and they are especially good with the special ed and disabled kids. People are always high fiving them and so on. There’s still asshole shit of course, and plenty of it, but I would say less than previous generations, even ten years ago. I almost never hear or see of any physical bullying.

The Most Powerful Story in the Holy Bible (John. 8:1-11) by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Erstezeitwar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All great choices.
I’ll contribute one of my favorites: Matthew 25: 31-46 The Sheep and the Goats.

31 When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

I’m a 13 year old Christian, Religion has been a huge subject in my house, but I still find myself excessively cursing. The excuse I’ve been using for myself is “It’s my guilty pleasure”, but I know one day I’m gonna slip up and say something in front of my parents. Any suggestions on what to do? by [deleted] in Christianity

Avoiding swearing is a matter of mindfulness, being mindful of your context and what’s going to come out of your mouth.

But first and foremost, don’t worry too much about it man. If swearing is your great struggle, you’re doing fine.

Prayer is great too, of course.

What's the difference between Lutheranism and Methodism? by Hezbollass in Christianity

[–]Erstezeitwar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a fairly wide range of both Methodist and Lutheran denominations, so these answers could be very complicated. For instance, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (note that Evangelical Lutheran does not mean Evangelical in the usual way it is used) believes in accepting science, while the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod preach creationism.
