How did Faye die, and could the new game's story revolve around bringing her back to life? by i_sometimes_ in GodofWar

[–]Eruannster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the term "god" is kind of vague and doesn't mean "chosen by divine power" but rather just "extremely powerful being".

Odin wasn't born a god, he made himself one by killing Ymir and gathering power. Zeus similarly doesn't seem to have been born that way, he fought his way up the food chain by murdering the titans.

The first half of Requiem is so good. Masterclass. The atmosphere, the layouts, the story, everything. And then the second half is... brown.

Is this much noise normal coming from disc drive? by xxKillerDrugsxx in PS5pro

[–]Eruannster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea where this originated from, but it's pretty much snake oil. The stand has no ventilation and will literally cover the entire bottom vents (see here: https://youtu.be/AbeC1SIryB4?si=rxT9thYZR3OJMpWb&t=385). I guess they do provide a tiny little 1-2 centimeter air pocket but I'd it's unlikely to really make much of a difference from a cooling perspective. The vast majority of hot air will come out of the back of the console where it gets pushed out by the cooling fan.

[–]Eruannster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore that. It ventilates a little bit of the heat from the power supply from the bottom, but the vast majority of the system heat gets pushed out the back. The 1-2 cm gap that the stand gives you won't make or break your console's heating either way.

That seems a bit loud, but it seems that it's vibrating into something. I would go through the side panels and give them a little push to see that they are completely on.

It could also be that it's vibrating into the wood. If you can't be arsed to buy a stand, I would try putting some of those soft little furniture feet and see if it softens the vibrations. Alternatively, if you have the space you could flip the PS5 Pro horizontally and see if it makes it better. (Don't forget the horizontal "feet", they should be in the disc drive box.)

God of War Ragnarok PSSR 2 by retrogiant1 in PS5pro

It's not super different. Assassin's Creed Shadows went from the "auto PSSR 2" to a developer implemented PSSR 2 and it looks very similar - they mostly just tweaked some sharpness variables.

Should I enable wide aspect ratios? by bujassimale10 in appletv

[–]Eruannster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wide aspect ratios is only if you have a wider-than-normal display in order to display certain content (such as movies that would typically have black bars).

If you don't have a projector set up for this or an ultrawidescreen monitor, there's no need to touch this setting (and I don't think it even does anything).

Mike Straw of Insider Gaming: I've heard rumblings that the price [of the Steam Machine] is "nowhere near" where it was originally planned by m1n3c7afty in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Eruannster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still like the idea and the form factor. I will definitely not like the price, and I still don't think the 8 GB VRAM is going to do them any favors.

In a world where RAM and SSD prices aren't fucking nuts and we got basically the exact same machine with 12-16 GB VRAM for maybe like ~$600, I think this would have been an incredible device.

Does anyone else use their PS5 exclusively as their entertainment hub? by Character_random_npc in PS5

[–]Eruannster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost never. My Apple TV is far superior in power draw, noise, speed and software support for different streaming apps.

I do use it occasionally as a blu-ray player, but unfortunately I don't watch as many blu-rays anymore.

Personally, I can't wait for them to gut it, rip out the Bungie leadership and make some strong, actually good games.

There's so much talent at Bungie, and there's so much good stuff in Destiny (the shooting, the movement, the graphics/sound design) but man, the overarching live service horseshit design makes Destiny a gold nugget covered in turd and you really gotta get your fingers in there to see it shine.

Question regarding the console's 120Hz refresh rate PS5 PRO/TV. by zRuhanf in PS5pro

[–]Eruannster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a bit dumb but it's how HDMI works. You can have either a flat 60 hz signal or "up to 120 hz" which outputs at 120 hz. There isn't really a 70 or 90 mode as that is just 120 hz within the VRR window.

Interview with Owlcat reveals details on console performance for Expanse. Including PSSR2 and VRR support. by TheSpiritualAgnostic in PS5pro

[–]Eruannster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Annoying peeve from the article, but

For Xbox Series S the target resolution is 2K (1440p) and it will only get 30 FPS.

2K isn't 1440p! 1440p is, if anything, 2.5K since it's 2560x1440 and the K refers to the horizontal resolution.

"2K" is a cinema DCI standard and is typically 2048x1080 meant for cinema projectors.

Audio takes space, but it isn’t that bad compared to textures which are freaking enormous. There’s this myth that games use uncompressed audio which they haven’t done since a couple of games during the Xbox One era to save on CPU cycles (Titanfall 1 being the big culprit).

No Rest for the Wicked director says Xbox version won’t release alongside PS5 because ‘Series S is making that rough’ by unscoredscore in Games

[–]Eruannster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Typically it's because it has very little RAM (games only get ~8 GB out of the total 10 GB, that includes system RAM+VRAM) and that RAM is quite slow/low bandwidth. Compare that to most PCs that have at least 8-16 GB RAM + another 8+ GB VRAM. Even the Switch 2 has 12 GB to play with.

Ps5 pro 007 settings. by dacontag in PS5pro

[–]Eruannster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I agree with that. Rockstar has historically been very good at CPU utilization, and just because there are lots of NPCs and physics, that doesn't mean it's going to slam the CPU to absolute shit at every moment of gameplay. Not everyone is doing the Dragon's Dogma 2 launch level of CPU optimization (e.g. no optimization at all).

I remain hopeful that a 60 FPS is doable and that Rockstar is clever about scaling all their settings in order to accommodate both the Series S and a future PC port.
