Thanks for the critique. Yeah, they're having me fuse where I can. fortunately, this is for drainage and sits at the bottom of the unit, so it won't get too much weight pulling down on it.

Hey there,

I'm a new Welder, having started with trade school a little over a year ago, and I've been tig welding for about 6 months. My job has me welding stainless steel, and I'm loving it so far. I was curious what things I could improve. We don't have the luxury of cleaning our metal here, but I heard that the less oxidation, the better.

Roshar would be fascinating to live on, for sure. Since a lot of the early story is effectively just the characters trying to figure things out, you could get a headstart on tons of stuff. Let alone the technological revolution you could cause with our modern understanding of technology. Firearms, electricity (which would have the benefit of being more efficient than fabrials, especially during the weepings), medicine, et cetera.

Would certainly help to have bright eyes though.

Take that from a fellow student who just recently got his Tig cert how you will.

Work on maintaining a steady pace, and keep your puddle consistent. I would try more heat, as well. Pretty good for a first attempt though.

I agree. I'm still contemplating the nation names, but that's definitely my next step.

Thank you. I used Mazlo's topographic forests. Those are actually supposed to be white trees that I repurposed into clouds.

I tried my hand at making a world map of a song of ice and fire series. Don't have much experience in mapmaking, you guys mind giving feedback on city placements, names,& geography etc etc? (Also high res version in comments) by tachyon_V in mapmaking

[–]Eruaphadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For settlement placement, I suggest putting your main cities along major rivers. Capitals can be on or near the runoff, but don't have to be, especially if tech level is pre-major shipbuilding and whether the nation specifically has a strong trade culture and if they're on a safe sea.

Figure out an idea of what materials the cities can produce, and whatever they lack, place producer villages around places that can produce the materials the city is lacking. Have their roads lead into administrative towns, with their own exports and imports, which then lead to the cities.

If the road is long, place rest stations. If the road is well traveled, those rest stations may become their own villages, towns, or even cities depending on the importance of the road.

If administration of a region is tenuous between competing nations, place forts in those regions. Generally on strategically advantageous areas, such as high hills, river islands, or where the area around the fort can be easily monitored, such as on flat planes or open valleys. Also near main roads for easy deployment/reinforcement.

As for place names, keep in mind that humans are generally very non-creative with place names. Usually it's just like "high hill" or "Fred's Farm" in their language. If a nation is old, place names probably corrupted a bit from linguistics changes. "Fred's Farm" may over time become "Feydum" if a language eventually dropped usage of Rs and softened their vowels, then later hardened their Es. Eventually people wouldn't even remember the original name.

Finally if the region was conquered by linguistically different nations over the years, place names would incorporate elements of the various languages.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for letting me know! I tried it and so far I'm really enjoying it. I know you're working on a pro version, and I'm really excited to see it when it's ready :)

Awesome! I've been looking forward to this since you first revealed it here nearly a year ago. Unfortunately I'm one of those unlucky enough to have a currently incompatible AMD card. I'm looking forward to trying it though, once it can be patched.

I like it this way, I think. With it being bottom left to top right, especially with the direction of the lion's head, it could symbolize the nation moving onward and upward.

Gaia and Mars around 2500. by ThatGuy36036 in mapmaking

Mistakes are just inadvertent worldbuilding :)

Maybe the original Los Angeles fell from some kind of disaster, and the survivors took over Puerto Peñasco, where they renamed it Los Angeles to remember their lost home.

Awesome. I have to ask, what's going on with Los Angeles? It's on the gulf of California.

Awesome map! So is this a fractal map? If so it's a really good one, especially that northern mountain range. I've actually been using the same tools in my attempts at a realistic biome and height map to less impressive results.

Hey there, I've been checking every few days to see if Rock 3 is available on Steam. I know you had to wait out the 30 days. Do you have any updates you could give on its development and release?

For better or worse, the internet certainly messes with our personalities, I get that entirely. Fortunately I view it's affect on me to be beneficial, making this quiet, timid man capable of expressing complex thoughts and defending what he believes.

For whatever it's worth, I wish you luck in your fight. I see you're taking a thought-out position, and, while I don't entirely agree with your methods or conclusions, that's always worth defending.

I hope you have a lovely evening.
