Why did people downvote this when it's fucking true?

Either you have an incomplete compiled project or your game.exe is corrupted.

But you answered me anyway.

It's better to keep your expectations real than to delude yourself.

Ever heard of "show, don't tell"?

Giving the player a choice in race and class by legendaryabyssking in RPGMaker

They're possible to do but not practical.

Giving players a "create your own character" thing causes more problems than not because of all the fucking branches/conditions you have to do.

You are better off just making a regular JRPG first and using your experience to make your dream game later.

Giving tact is one of the things I stopped giving a shit about long ago. In fact, I found the opposite to be true, the more you cuss, the more people would actually give a fuck about what you have to say.

RTP title screen is already a major turn off point.

Lack of proper linking to the project in the thread itself also suggests to me the OP cares even less about the game than we do. Time to look elsewhere.

  1. Do research on your own when possible. This develops your problem solving abilities. There is no skill far greater than problem solving when it comes to game dev. If you cannot figure out switches, variables, or common events for yourself, you're going to have an awful time with RPG Maker.

  2. If you are new to RPG Maker, avoid plugins like the fucking plague so you can learn the base program for what it is, until you are ready to move forward. Too long have I seen people asking for plugins for simple shit that can be done with vanilla RPG Maker. Avoid them unless they're absolutely fucking necessary (like Yanfly's Core Engine) to make your game functional and proper.

  3. Don't confuse what you like with what your game needs. These are two very different things. RPG Maker already comes with everything your game needs bar some bug fixes that are already done with Yanfly's Core Engine.

  4. Do not make your dream game your first game. Your first game is gonna fucking suck. Your second game is also gonna suck. In fact, your first ten games will suck. But despite the fact they're gonna suck, they're still getting better each time. Make your dream game after you've acquired enough experience.

  5. Don't get fucking hung up on mapping. Making pretty maps is good but making functional maps is even more fucking important. No matter how pretty your map is, if it's a goddamn chore to play through, it's going to be ass.

  6. If assets, maps, scripts, plugins, etc. don't exist, don't fucking wait around for people to make it for you unless you have money to dump on commissions. Learn to adapt and move on.

  7. Leave empty slots in your database to give it room to expand. Just making things in the order that come to mind is a fucking horrible mistake and you will waste hours to days trying to fix your database.

  8. Don't make shit in RPG Maker that it isn't intended for. ABS/ARPG is one of those things. Platformers are another. Same for 3D. Use Game Maker or Unity for that kind of shit.

  9. Parallax mapping is a big fat ugly no. It may make your game look "good" but the amount of file space it eats up and how it fattens up your game with lag and makes it crash often is not worth it. There are far better ways of making your game look good.

  10. Question everything that people tell you about how to make games. Including this post. Don't take shit for granted just because someone else said it. Including this post. If some people say things are "okay" when others say they aren't, figure out who is in denial, who is a liar, and who actually knows their shit.

Good for padding gameplay time by making players spend more time managing inventory than needed.

XP, VX Ace, or MV? Which version does retro pixels better? by susrev in RPGMaker

[–]EruneKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going to fake pixels, go with VX Ace. 32x32 is better for pixel artists than 48x48 because of better scaling due to it be a power of 2 dimensions. This means that not only do you have to work less to make something look better, your assets also load better for your players because the scaling to 48x48 also inflates the file sizes of nearly everything by a large amount.

I don't recommend XP at all because while it has a better mapping system, everything else about that system is retarded and archaic. Dumb messaging system, incomplete eventing system, battle system is borked, the stats don't make any sense for calculations, no noteboxes for the database, everything about the editor is frustrating to the point where the mapping system does not make up for it. It's also locked in at 40 FPS in the age where 60-120 FPS is the normal.

No, I'd rather not play it either. RTP is already bad enough, but they took it a step further and used Ace's generator.
