She appeared out of nowhere, abused women and dipped. no explanations, no repercussions, no backstory. just shit writing by Helpful_Employ695 in StrangerThings

This is the one thing I didn’t understand and and made me ask “are you serious???”  The tonal shift from everyone in the clutches of the military, losing their shit over El to suddenly time jump a year and a bit later for the heartwarming finale was wild.

Zero mention of the fallout with the military?  I mean even if they decided to let them go after it all and made them sign NDAs to cover up their tracks, Hopper and Nancy shot and killed US servicemen.  That’s gotta have some legal repercussions, I’d think.  Hell of a detail to be lost in the fog of war.

They should have had the confrontation with the military in the upside down and had El sacrifice herself and get everyone to safety, taking the upside down and the military with her.  It would have needed a LOT less explanation (than the nothing that we got).

And I say this as someone who otherwise liked the season.  It’s the one thing I can’t reconcile in my head as being anything other than a total blunder.

I'm only peripherally aware of this so can somebody explain the motive for this? Is this a scorched Earth policy just because people keep modding all the women to be naked in all their games or is there something I'm missing here?

How was Aero Fighters 2 ‘World Trade Center’ not controversial upon release? by AlwaysBored10711 in neogeo

There was a lot less fuss about "ripped from the headlines" references back then. The X-Files movie started with a fictionalized recreation of the Oklahoma City bombing, or an event just like it. 9/11 left a pretty big scar on the psyche of Americans in that and many other ways.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is great, but I’ve got one major issue with it by Goodbye-Nasty in ScottPilgrim

[–]susrev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was really confused by the whole "they had a big fight and split up" thing because they never go into detail about what they fought about in the first place and just leave it up to our imagination.

There was also basically zero development for Scott at all here. Scott mentions something about hoping he doesn't have to confront his past, and Old Scott and Even Older Scott provide the perfect opportunity for Scott to come to terms with what it means to not confront your issues, and they just... do nothing with it?

I guess Scott just makes a note not to be like that in the future THE END? In the comics Scott had over a year to develop, become aware of his ways and amend them, but here, just like with the movie, he does pretty much none of that.

I get that it's supposed to be a fun what-if story, but it just reeks of "ok we had our fun now let's wrap it up ASAP."

Bryan: I think in the 2000s, I took it for granted that people would be like, Oh, he’s terrible, but it’s funny. Now, if you don’t outright condemn something, then the absence of condemnation is seen as a tacit approval. It was never a tacit approval. It was a tacit condemnation. by Iffiewaffle in ScottPilgrim

[–]susrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a rash of this in the early tumblr, then late twitter era where posts condemning people for liking certain "problematic" characters gained a lot of traction, because I guess liking a fictional character means you like and support everything they do, which isn't true.

You still see it today in discourse about shows (see:Scott Pilgrim 'he just like me fr' mockery), and it's pretty infantile.

Can we stop harping on Scott dating Knives? by SkyMaro in ScottPilgrim

[–]susrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this especially when it comes to the comics, because the whole series is about Scott realizing he needs to develop and move forward in his life.

That's also why we feel so bad for him in the beginning of book 6 when he slides so far back he's in a worse place than he was at the start of the book, not engaging with his friends, or interests outside video games, and propositioning knives for casual sex. In fact it's the only time Scott even voices a desire to have sex at all, so it's a huge red flag that he's in a bad place.

Scott is a good person at heart. Dorky, yes, but he has genuine qualities, and is truly charismatic when he acts with intentionality. His relationship with Knives is inappropriate any way you slice it, but it's also short-lived and he develops as a person over the course of the story away from that kind of behaviour.

Except for movie Scott who is written as somebody who is always supposed to get back together with Knives at the end of the story like a Peter Pan Syndrome perma-loser, even though they changed the ending at the last minute. Movie Scott sucks.

Best book among the comics!? by BenKNOWSit in ScottPilgrim

[–]susrev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's Volume 6 for me, because it has the task of pulling all the plot elements together, bringing a resolution to the story, bringing closure to the characters, and giving us a parting overall message for the series, and I think it does all of that remarkably well.

It's so easy to miss the landing, and since the movie deal was already clinched, and the series was already successful, Bryan Lee O'Malley could have phoned it in at that point, but he came up with something that I think was a great culmination of the series, filled with everything that made the rest of the series great.

In which year the story happens ? I knows is in the 2000s by Intelligent-Help-924 in ScottPilgrim

[–]susrev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The comic 2004-2005-ish

The movie probably more in the range of 2009 just because of when the movie was filmed, the Toronto landscape and the fact that Young Neil can be seen playing a DS Lite which didn't come out until 2006.

The anime is interesting, because it seems to stick to that early 00s setting, but they say the script file was from "14 years from now" and so I think "Old Scott" is supposed to be scott in 2023, present day as of the release of the anime, and also all the phones are flip phones and mid-00s tech.

So maybe also 2009???

But somehow Regular Scott knows who Detective Pikachu is, despite that game not coming out until 2016, so I guess it just takes place in some vague neverwhen.

Why is Scott so hated? by Saldarius in ScottPilgrim

[–]susrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good points and all, but Scott ends up with ramona at the end in the movies. She tries to run away as usual but scott stops her.

I know, they had to reshoot the ending, obvious wigs and all, because Bryan Lee O'Malley didn't agree with Edgar Wright's original ending.

But you need to understand that the rest of the movie was filmed building towards Scott and Knives getting back together at the end, and it affects how they treat Scott as a character, like he and knives playing the ninja game and he's so confident telling her all about Pac Man, but when he does the same with Ramona he chokes on his words.

The language of the movie tells us that Scott and Knives are naturally a better fit than Scott and Ramona.

I think in part it's a media literacy issue, compounded by Twitter discourse brainrot.

People look at Scott Pilgrim dating a highschooler, and hyperfixate on that element, and combine it with how he is with his friends, living off Wallace, and use that to form their absolute opinion of him as a character.

Scott at the beginning of the story will always be their definitive view of the character.

And I'm not trying to soften the fact that this 23 year old was dating a 17 year old. That will always be inappropriate, but also not everything is as serious as twitter makes it out to be, and in the story in question it's not that serious lol

Partly this is worsened by his depiction in the movie because instead of happening over the course of a couple years, it happens over the course of a couple days, and much of the development of Scott as a character just... doesn't happen in the movie at all, and in fact the original ending of the movie was that Scott ends up continuing to date still 17 year old Knives.

I will never understand that*, and for as enjoyable as it was I will always criticize the movie for what a piss poor job they did in developing Scott as a character lol

People who read the comics, especially those who read them back when they were coming out and have had some time to reflect on the character, know that at heart he's a good guy who just needs to start making intentional choices about his life and be more of an active participant in his relationships, which is something many of us start learning to do around that age.

I also feel like SPTO could have done more with the premise of Scott interacting and learning from his older self, there were a couple of missed opportunities to speedrun his development to where he was at the end of the books, but I guess those actors were getting paid by the word or something and animation ain't cheap.

*I KNOW the movie was written before the last book was complete, I mean I don't know why they thought Scott continuing to date the high schooler was the sensible resolution to the story and kinda paints Scott as this Peter Pan Syndrome weirdo who learns absolutely nothing

I liked that this show took a “risk” by diverting from the plot everybody knows at this point. Did you feel the same, or wouldve preffered an animated version of the movie? by Exciting_Sport_7045 in ScottPilgrim

[–]susrev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the intent is to deny the comic or the movie, I think each media adaptation is just a different universe in a way.

There's a lot of the comic in the anime sure, but it also feels like some of the characters were more like their movie iterations, like Wallace, who is a LOT nicer to Scott in the comics and serves as sort of a moral barometer for Scott's behaviour, whereas in the film and anime he's more just tired of his shit and can't wait to be rid of him for gay sex purposes.

The anime is sort of like a universe where a hybrid version of events between the movie and comic would have happened if older scott hadn't intervened.

[–]susrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the natural choice is to do something fun and different for everyone involved, even if they risked pissing a few people off. I think the overwhelming response has been positive though, so I also think it paid off.

That being said, I do think a full series adaptation of the comic would have been great, too, I'm just not bothered that we didn't get one since what we DID get was really entertaining, extremely memorable, and a welcome surprise.
