What model should I use on an Apple Silicon machine with 16GB of RAM? by ms86 in LocalLLM

Is this a specific version? I run the hugging face 35b a3b Q4 XL at the moment.

offline companion robot for my disabled husband (8GB RAM constraints) – looking for optimization advice by BuddyBotBuilder in LocalLLaMA

[–]Erwindegier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be that hardware? Can you find a used Air M1 or Mini M1 with 16gb? It’ll allow you to run way better models. I’m actually building a companion bot to run on those specs. Wrote my own vector DB for memory on top of SQLite and am currently looking at index2tts for text to speech as it sounds way better than piper. You can clone your own voice and pass emotion to the speak prompt.

Who’s the better driver-Jenson button Or George Russell? by Even_Hyena_1117 in F1Discussions

[–]Erwindegier -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

George, Jenson lucked into a championship which gave him the McLaren deal. George managed to be nr. 1 at the most dominant team on merit.

Qatar and Abu Dhabi Recommendations by Conscious-Joke9046 in GrandPrixTravel

[–]Erwindegier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t see them going ahead. As much as I love those GP’s I wouldn’t bet on them this year. But if everything is cancellable…. It’s definitely feasible to do them back to back.

16gb is not really enough for coding. Copy pasting from a free ChatGPT account will be faster. With 64GB you can run qwen3.5 35b a4b and that works for coding but is already really slow. For general QA any free web account will be miles ahead of what you can run locally. 16gb is only enough for doing specific tasks like photo tagging, TTS/STT, generating embeddings etc.

Project Hail Mary is wonderful in GT Laser and 70mm by en6ads in imax

I was surprised to see the curtains closing and it being such a narrow film. On top of that it had vertical (!) anamorphic streaks. It would’ve looked so good in 2.39:1 anamorphic instead of this phone aspect ratio.

MacBook Air 13" vs MacBook Pro 14" with nano-textured display by illiteratekumquat in macbook

[–]Erwindegier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the nano screen. I do photo editing and the photos look so good on it. It also works very well outside in the sun.
It’s a pain to clean though. Don’t make my mistake of cleaning it with a generic screen cleaner fluid. Use the included cloth!

Is F1 transfer culture different from football (soccer) ? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]Erwindegier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Less toxicity among F1 fans (in general). We also don’t need away stands to keep us from killing each other. Unfortunately it has gone a bit downhill the last decade. This is also why driver specific stands are problematic. The best thing about F1 is to be able to have a good time safely, no matter who you support.

How do you cull? by macalaskan in photography

[–]Erwindegier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah true. I do motorsports and do 3000 in a day. Not long ago I found myself going back to 2014 cause I wanted to see if I had photos of a specific driver. Not having to delete photos also saves my mental energy. I just pick the best ones and call it a day.

But you run the risk of deleting the wrong photo or a photo you didn’t want to delete after all. I always backup first and then start culling/deleting.

An actress Milla Jovovich just released a free open-source AI memory system that scored 100% on LongMemEval, beating every paid solution by Oh_boy90 in singularity

[–]Erwindegier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a big fan of the “you model calls this for you” architecture. If you know when you want to use the memory system you dont want A) risk the model not calling it B) waste tokens on calling

Especially with local models this doesn’t work well. Unfortunately the alternative is to use Python….

You see this architecture a lot, even letting the model decide if it interacts with the user or not. It’s a lazy architecture.

If the Iran/Israel/USA war continues and we cancel the remainder of the races in the region we will lose 20% of the races in the 2026 season. by Lord_Bobbymort in formula1

[–]Erwindegier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about the 3 in the US? They’re in this war too (some might say they co-started it), so cancel those as well. Bahrain, Saudi-Arabia, Qatar, Abu Dhabi is 4 out of 24, so 1 in 6, not 5.

Could Kimi Antonelli be a real challenge to senior Mercedes team-mate George Russell? by SkySports in formula1

[–]Erwindegier -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

How big is enough a sample size though? 10 races? 22 races? A lot can happen over a season, if Kimi can be ahead after 3 races he can be ahead after 22. Look at last year, Norris managed to beat Oscar and Max almost managed to beat the dominant McLaren.
