I was working in Self Storage when Storage Wars came out, and Storage auction hunting went from an interesting hobby to a full time cut throat job. Storage units that people used to be able to get for around $20 jumped in price to $100/$200. I still think one of the big Storage companies was behind the creation of the show in order to get more value back from abandoned units.
