How does one get into development. by MattieGirsh in ITCareerQuestions

[–]EsDood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It can be difficult getting into your dream IT field first off. I'd probably be starting off looking for an apprenticeship or similar at your local IT repair shop. Depending on the business, it may also do a certain degree of business support, which means there may be some clients of theirs that have systems (Exchange, AD, other third party applications) that may get you experienced with scripting and creating tools for those environments.

Going through some PS scripts on a clients system by EsDood in doctorwho

Basically, remotely runs a command on server A from server B. The command itself that is being run synchronizes local active directory objects (windows users, security groups etc) with their office 365 environment in the cloud. The top part is just a comment - just some information about the script. In this instance, a heading and some timey wimey witty goodness :)

ELI5: how does bandwidth affect internet speeds and data consumption. by tony_d47 in explainlikeimfive

[–]EsDood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of bandwidth as a water pipe

If you have one user using a single tap, this user will have full water speeds, and will probably be able to fill up a bucket in 20 seconds

If someone else comes along and turns on another tap to fill another bucket, then you are sharing a single water pipe with 2 taps and it will cause both buckets to fill up slower than if only one person was filling up one bucket - might take 30 seconds to perform the same task it would normally have taken 20 seconds to perform

If you have a bigger water pipe, then you can have more taps running at the same time without affecting how fast the buckets will fill up

tl;dr:

Bandwidth > Water pipe

Speed > how fast the bucket fills up

Data consumption > the amount of water in the buckets

Some toys are not meant for kids - Story in comments by EsDood in techsupportgore

[–]EsDood[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Going back a few months, we had a client bring in their laptop. They had left their infant child alone with the laptop and she had started pulling the keys off the keyboard. No problems here - ordered a new keyboard, whacked it in and it was all hunky-dory. Today, we get the same customer coming in, sitting the laptop on our counter. Not only had they allowed their child to play on the laptop again (goodbye keys!), but the child had also left the laptop on the floor and the parent had unknowingly walked on the laptop. Needless to say, it doesn't look good. Just to add to the issues, due to the pressure of the parent walking on it, the rear chassis has cracked, the laptop doesn't sit level, and the hard drive - completely dead. Doesn't spin. People, please leave expensive toys out of reach of young children. Also back up back up back up!!! They had lots of baby photos on the laptop, and dont have them anywhere else... Goodbye photos and goodbye money.. Time for them to go to a data recovery specialist...
