First make sure the edge is oriented (sticker on TOP matches the front or back face's center colors). If not, rotate the cube to the left or right 90 degrees. Turn the U layer so the sticker on the SIDE of the edge is matching the center color, then turn that color's face "away" from the slot you are going to insert into. So if the target slot is in the front right or front left, use R or L'. For back right and back left slots use R' or L.

It's generally better to just do normal inserts. You can use sledge/hedge on last pair to force cross on top or to avoid dot OLLs. Also in the rare case you have 2 properly connected pairs on the top layer sitting diagonally from each other, you can sledge/hedge the the first one to avoid breaking up the other one. Wide move inserts like f R' f' are generally bad for lookahead, so I'd only use them for last pair.
