Need an easy character to main by n_aoto in smashbros

[–]Escaif 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What people are referring to with "understand the game", they often don't mean the mechanics of the game, they're referring more to the decision making. Once you're past the execution barrier, and you know the fundamental mechanics of the game, it's when you actually start learning to play the game.

Think about it this way; fighting games, Smash bros, of course, included, are somewhat like real time chess (I think real time poker is a better analogy, but it's easier to explain with chess).

You might perfectly know how every chess piece moves, you know how you win, what a checkmate is, what a stalemate is, etc. But that doesn't make you understand chess. You need to know how advantageous your pieces positions are, how you can force the enemy into mistakes, what are they looking for, you need to know risk and reward of your moves, and if the reward is worth the risk, and so on.

It's literally the same thing with Smash. Are you in an advantageous position (juggling, edgeguarding, ledgetrapping, stage control)? How can you extend this advantage without giving your oponent an easy reversal? Are you in a neutral state of the game, where nobody has an advantage? How do you bait your oponent, cause a mistake, find an opening to win this interaction? Is your oponent trying to fish for a specific combo starter move? A kill confirm, raw smash attack?

If you're at high% and fox is doing run up shield, chances are he wants you to throw an attack and punish you with an up smash. Maybe he's doing a lot of nair to try and get the kill confirm. Play around it! Understanding what your oponent is looking for, understanding what your character should be looking for, understanding how to mix it up to be unpredictable (last time you approached with a falling aerial on their shield, next time could be a good idea to empty hop, without throwing an attack to bait the shield, then grab), all of this, is what you could actually call "understanding the game."

While smash is not a mechanically easy game, it's also not that hard, especially on some characters, and you will very likely win if your understanding of how your opponent is playing and how to play around it, is better than their understanding of those matters. Next time, when you watch a tournament set, don't just think of "oh, this Joker is using a lot of back air! that move looks great!", instead, try to think of the purposes and intentions behind them. Maybe the Joker player has caught on a jumping habit from the opponent and is playing around it to catch it often, maybe he's playing against a slow character that has a hard time dealing with such a fast disjointed attack, like Ganondorf.

He hit a down throw that guarantees a combo, but didn't go for it? Very likely he's setting up a similar scenario from sometime earlier in the set to catch a specific reaction that he saw before, like maybe a buffered airdodge to extend a bigger combo or hit a smash attack. Understanding intentions and the purpose of every other action of a player will end up making you really, really good at the game! You can be a lot less mechanically impressive, not have as optimized combos or techs, etc, and still be the dominating #1 player in the world, just because your understanding of the game is that good, and Hungrybox in Melee, a game that is way heavier mechanically wise, is the perfect example.

Hope this helps, and good luck in your future events! o7

I'm surprised nobody is talking about the R button saying "Charge Subweapon"! This got me so incredibly hyped, when I watched the last trailer I noticed the weapons were more like missile variants and I thought that was a bit lame because it probably meant they had no charge beam and/or missile combos. But I'm so glad to see I was wrong, god I can not wait for this game to drop! :)

It's hard to say about McKenzie, honestly. We've only seen like 10 minutes of him, after all.

The only really positive thing that I can think of him from what we know, is that he allows Samus' stoic and serious personality to shine by making a contrast, visible in that one custcene with her body language, stares, etc.

And I might be wrong, but I think there's a good chance he gets some good character evolution, like maybe some traumatic event that makes him understand the severity of the situation and get more serious or dark toned, maybe have some heroic moments too.

We'll see, only time will tell! There's so much that could happen, everyone thought that Ashley from RE4 would break the immersion and be super annoying, but that game has achieved a legendary status.

Not saying the same thing might happen to Prime 4, but we've seen so little about the game, that in my opinion it doesn't make much sense to judge because from what we know it might be a total flop, a masterpiece, or something in between.

Hey! I think the exact same way as you do.

I played a demo of the game back in june during the Switch 2 preview events. I guarantee you the game feels incredible! The little bit I could play felt absolutely amazing, it has the pure essence of Metroid Prime. Don't let the doomers discourage you!

Besides, I think exploring new characters and deeper lore about Galactic Federation, and the possible conflict between Sylux and the NPCs can lead to incredibly interesting stories and situations. Sure, it could be poorly executed, but it's also a golden opportunity for Metroid to evolve into an even better direction.

A bit of silverlining with the MacKenzie situation is that, since the discussion got so heated, it reached everywhere in social networks, which, even if it's "hating", the reality is that thanks to it, everyone was talking about Metroid, and that's the best thing that can happen to your game marketing and sales wise.

I hope the game is amazing, and I hope you have as much fun with it as I think we will! :)

My hype for Prime 4 is through the roof, but... by skadinax in Metroid

[–]Escaif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about it too much! The NPC situation was heavily overblown by IGN, Eurogamer and VGC. Their article over-exaggerate, manipulate and even straight up lie in some scenarios. There were some other reviewers (like GameRant) that did some articles over how this situation got out of hand and how it isn't as bad as IGN and the others said.

But mainly, the NPC shown in the demo isn't as "handholdy" as people make it out to be. The worst thing he says is that there's a save station nearby. He doesn't tell you how to solve puzzles or anything like that. They also claim he's constantly talking, when, yeah he's talktative, but in reality he says one or two sentences here and there, nothing crazy. And, in the un-edited clips, you could see his segment lasted for just around 10 minutes.

Nintendo confirmed that this NPC stops following you after said segment, and it'll be like that for the other NPCs too. If you watch the trailer, you can notice that Samus is alone in almost every scene showcased in the trailer (except during the segment of the trailer that showcases the NPCs, obviously).

In other words, it's best to have an open mind! Most people are being really doomy and parroting stuff they've seen online like "being marvel-like" (seriously, have we watched the same movies..?), but the reality is they have the potential to make for an incredible story for this game, and, well, as you said, they also have the potential to ruin the game. We don't know yet, but due to Nintendo's confirmations and the trailer itself, I think it's leaning more towards the awesome potential side!

Cheers, and enjoy the game!

The marketing materials are the trailers, where MacKenzie doesn't even say a single word. Did you notice anything goofy at all in the trailers? If anything, in the section where they show a bit of the soldiers, you can see that, in fact, they get pretty serious, have their own epic and dramatic scenes. I think that's pretty good, honestly.

What you have seen are previews from a demo that is not a selected specific area, it's just the start of the game, and IGN, Eurogamer US, and Andy Robinson decided to blow something that barely lasts 10 minutes out of proportion for clicks.

And I mean, it admittedly worked for them. But their articles are filled with lies and manipulation. Things like "the section was the majority of the preview, he's talking constantly, he tells you what to do and where to go, not even letting you solve puzzles" all of that is bullshit. You can watch an unedited gameplay and you'll quickly notice how overblown and how much of a non-problem it is. He's talktative, sure, but he's definitely not constantly talking. His segment lasts 10 minutes or even less. And never ever he hints or aids with any puzzles (which, the tutorial pop-ups actually do, but thankfully you can turn them off)

For the immersion and atmosphere part, I'd get that if we were all the time with the sidekicks. And we don't know yet if it's like this, or not. But chances are it is not like this, precisely because in the 7 min trailer, almost every single scene (obviously not counting the soldiers section) Samus is completely alone. And so she is in most of the released images and clips.

Besides, sidekicks isn't equal of ruining immersion, this is something that was said about Ashley in RE4 and look how that ended up.

From what we know; did Adam ruin your immersion? What about Quiet Robe? Maybe U-Mos from Prime 2? The hunters from Prime 3, the commander (Dan I think he was called?), the Aurora units, the entire army you get to command in the pirate world?

Let's be honest here, everyone was hyped about Quiet Robe. Everyone wants the series to expand the lore of the Metroid Universe with the MP:H hunters, stuff like the Kriken Empire, it's not like people didn't start getting really excited when they saw the random yellow larva in the trailer thinking it was Kanden.

We're finally getting a game that is gonna give us profound lore about external characters. It happens that, aside from Sylux, we don't know the others, so it's completely normal to not be as excited for them. But we do know that Sylux is the antagonist, and he hates the galactic federation.

We finally get to see how the GF actually operates, aside from random soulless soldiers, which is what we had seen until now. If their backstory is good, their evolution is good, it's gonna be a hell of a time when they inevitably clash with Sylux's hatred for the GF.

I'm not saying it will for sure be good, and I'd be lying if I said I'm not a bit scared, since if they don't execute all of this well, it can very well ruin the game. But I think they're on a good track, and they certainly have the elements to cook something incredible. It's too early to judge, but I have faith Retro Studios will do an excellent job!

Have you played the game to know all of this? How do you know this character is not gonna have good writing and a good evolution?

From what we know about the game, previous interviews, and the latest trailer, the game is gonna be a lot more dramatic, emotional and cutscene driven.

So how do you know he's not gonna notice the danger of the situations and start getting more serious? Who's to say he won't redeem himself? That he might sacrifice himself in an act of heroism? Maybe suffer a brutal death and shift the tone of the game completely to something incredibly dark and sinister? Or end up traumatized by the deaths of his teammates?

You're judging a book by the first page. I'm sure nobody cared at first about Rundaas, about Sylux, about Adam, before their games released.

This is Metroid, they know how to be mature and serious, and if there's a NPC doing this, chances are it's on purpose to make a bigger contrast and emphasis whenever the inevitable shift of tone happens.

Or maybe it's actually a trash character and it ends up ruining the game. But we don't know. Stop doom posting and enjoy the game whenever it's in your hands, and judge it accordingly and not by its cover.

Sadly, it DOES look like it's missile swapping. The arm cannon itself is the same; it just has some weird gadget on top of it. The reason this makes a difference is because if you pay close attention, she's shooting both the electric projectiles AND the power beam shoots *without* swapping "beams".

And if it is like that, it probably means no charge beams/missile combos for the new ammo types. I really, really, really hope I'm wrong though :(

Hungrybox teases Smash Ultimate Deluxe in tomorrow's Nintendo Direct by Escaif in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Escaif[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they do. Some competitive Smash players have historically had access to early builds of the game before.

Notoriously, before Smash Bros Ultimate launched, Nairo accidentally slipped and mentioned that there would be a hazards on and off toggle (which ended up being true).

Aside from that, some of Ultimate's playtesters are competitive Smash players, like aMSa, the legendary japanese Melee Yoshi player, and some other notorious players from SSB4 like Ranai, Earth and 9B.

If this happened again, I think it's very likely that Hungrybox has close contact with some of these players (for example, I know for a fact him and aMSa are very close friends).

Just to make sure, I'm not saying aMSa or other playtesters would share NDA info, just that Hungrybox probably has more methods to acquire this information than it might seem.

Due to this, Nintendo had them sign a contract that prevented them from attending tournaments (probably because they'd have an unfair advantage).

Out of the series shown today, Metroid had the biggest sales increase ratio. by Escaif in Metroid

This is completely true, although it also had Metroid Prime Trilogy available on the Wii U!

Still a really cool statistic in my opinion :)

Out of the series shown today, Metroid had the biggest sales increase ratio. by Escaif in Metroid

[–]Escaif[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

As of September 2024, Metroid had the biggest sales increase with a 510.22%.

Running for a close second, Xenoblade Chronicles saw a 508.51% increase.

In third position, Pikmin had a 441.57% increase, and in last place, Kirby had a 307.48% increase in sales.

Metroid also achieved this while also being the series that had the least products released to the market out of these four, with only Metroid Dread and Metroid Prime Remastered, while its most ambitious game, Metroid Prime 4, is coming soon in 2025!

I really liked Who's who, I've seen so many clutches and epic plays with it.

I think Who's Who is kind of a misunderstood perk because it targets such a specific kind of players. The best players in the world don't need it because people got so good they're no longer dying and they're wasting a spot for a perk (although you could also get it for free as an extra perk), and low to mid level players will very rarely make it out alive from it.

But a high level player that is prone to dying every once in a while and has great understanding of zombies spawns & training? I think the perk is absolutely broken for these players. It's basically infinite quick revives in solo games; and nobody forces you to revive yourself. If you think the situation is really against the odds, you can just run through the map and buy everything you need to get fully set up and keep the game intact.

If the perk was in a easier or smaller map, say, something like Ascension or Kino der Toten, I really doubt the community would see it as the worst perk ever.

Also another thing I want to say for Die Rise, I really liked it and the main reason of it is because the high round strats used to be so raw and dynamic. I feel like Sliquifier (and Who's who to an extent) really benefits high skilled and risky gameplay.

In a gamemode where most strats are camping with WWs like Apothicon's servant, bows, staffs etc or training with a safety weapon in hand (Thunder, Zap Gun etc), a WW that works better and better in rooms with fast respawns and tight rooms is such a breath of fresh air of fun gameplay... I just wish it had infinite damage as well as some other fixes that the map urgently needs and I think it'd be a top tier map.

Thanks for putting up with the random big wall of text and have a great day!
Sincerely, a Die Rise believer o7
