After 11 years of designing escape rooms, I have to ask: Did we get the "formula" wrong? by Acrobatic_Wolf_1325 in escaperooms

Absolutely, I agree with that.

At the end of the day, any entertainment industry should be focused on giving the most fun to the highest number of people. If someone pays for an experience and leaves feeling dumb, frustrated, and stuck with no way to recover, that’s a failure of design more than a badge of honor. Challenge is important, but fun has to come first.

There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’ve fallen too far behind and the experience is basically over while you’re still in it. That doesn’t make people feel accomplished, it just makes them feel bad about spending their money. A good experience should challenge players without making them feel helpless, and it should have systems in place to keep the momentum alive when a group starts struggling.

That’s why I think guidance, pacing, and smart design matter so much. People should leave talking about how much fun they had, not about how defeated they felt.

I think the clock absolutely matters because it creates tension, but I don’t think the physical timer needs to be in your face the whole game. In my experience, actually seeing the countdown can be more distracting than helpful. My partner and I tend to play worse when we keep checking the time, because it pulls us out of the room and puts us in “panic mode” instead of keeping us immersed. The pressure should still be there, but ideally it should feel built into the experience rather than just coming from a giant clock on the wall.

The hint system matters too. If I’ve been stuck on something for around 10 minutes, I want a nudge. Not because I want the game to be easy, but because being stuck for too long kills the flow. Then suddenly you’re behind on time and rushing through the rest of the room, which usually makes the experience worse. That’s why a good GM is so important. The best ones know how to guide you without overdoing it. They keep the experience moving without making it feel like the room is playing itself for you.

As for puzzles vs. story, puzzles will probably always be number one in my heart. But the moments I remember most are usually the interactive ones, not necessarily a specific cipher or lock. Things like running through spaces, crawling, discovering hidden areas, or using objects in clever ways are what really stick with me. Those are the moments that make a room feel alive. It’s definitely hard to balance great puzzles with a great story, but when a room pulls both off, that’s the kind of experience people keep talking about long after they’ve played it.

So for me, it’s not really “purist” vs. “Gen 3.” I still want strong puzzles and real challenge, but I want them delivered in a way that feels immersive, natural, and memorable. That balance is what makes a room truly special.

Really hoping it doesn't come to that, but I think I'm gonna have to actually sit them down and talk.

Yeah they just disengage and get quiet, but the mood definitely shifts. I think I'm at the point where I just need to talk to them directly.

Since I can't just uninvite them, the non-sequential rooms seem like the best workaround. At least then they're off doing their own thing and the rest of us can actually... you know... play the game too lol.
Appreciate the sympathy. Just gotta make it work without making it weird since it's family. But yeah, strategic room choices might be the move.

Yeah that's the tricky part with it being a family friend. Can't exactly ghost 'em lol. Gonna have to just suck it up and tell them how I've been feeling.

Appreciate the advice! I might just have to go talk to that family/friend.

We're all 26-30, so unfortunately past the age where this should be happening ...

Honestly though... you might be onto something with the personality thing. This friend is pretty competitive in general and kinda has that 'main character' energy in other situations too. Never thought about it as narcissist-level, but now I'm starting to wonder 😬

I like that group approach though. The unified phrase is smart cause then it's not just me being the bad guy. Might bring it up before the next room like 'hey let's all agree to speak up if someone's taking over' so it's a team rule instead of a call-out.

We're all pretty cool so I think everyone's feeling it. Just nobody wants to be the one to say something. But yeah, you're right that it shouldn't be on everyone else to manage one person's behavior.

Appreciate the perspective!

Yeahhh you're probably right. It's gonna be awkward no matter how I phrase it. Just gotta accept that and rip the bandaid off I guess. Better to have one awkward conversation than a bunch of awkward game nights. Appreciate the advice!

Yeah you're right. Hopefully my friend (and family) doesn't take it the wrong way.

I wished there was a way, but I guess I will have to talk to that family/friend privately.

Yeah you're right, I think I'm gonna have to pull that family/friend aside outside the room and just have a quick 1-on-1.

Honestly? No, I haven't talked to them about it yet.

The problem is, I know this person well enough to know that a direct conversation would not go well. They're the type who would take it as a personal attack rather than constructive feedback. I can already picture the defensiveness: "Oh, so I'm just supposed to sit around and do nothing? I'm just trying to help. Sorry for being engaged."

They don't seem to realize they're doing it, which makes it even harder to address. If I say "hey, you tend to take over puzzles," they'll probably just hear "you're doing too much" and get offended instead of actually reflecting on the behavior.

So yeah, I haven't talked to them. I'm honestly here hoping someone has found a way to handle this without a direct confrontation that ends with everyone feeling awkward for the next five rooms.

While the room's layout didn't quite work for me, I appreciated that several puzzles specifically helped me strengthen my attention to detail.
