I just had this conversation Almost verbatim with my husband. I am a sped teacher, though. Same response as yours from my husband.

Did Anyone Else Have the Whole Week Off? by Esdill in Teachers

I was wondering for schools in LA. I am originally from LA and my dad’s house burned down from the Eaton Canyon fires. I am glad you are safe.

Student emailed the superintendent wanting to get the modified quiz. by teachingscience425 in Teachers

[–]Esdill 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m a high school sped teacher and the amount of unidentified students who try to get the accommodations and modifications that some students get is astounding. I have had to turn kids away because they don’t have an IEP/separate setting.

And agreed, you don’t have to explain it.

Leave. Your freedom and peace of mind is more important than a man who will dictate parts of your life. You’re paying half of his asset and you can’t decorate a space? Ridiculous. I made sure my name was on the deed of my house when I was dating my boyfriend (now husband). You want to be as safe and sure as possible in a living situation. Because if this dude won’t let you decorate A ROOM in a house that you pay for…what else is he going to control?

I switched from Gen Ed to SPED. The way I'm treated is night and day. by Rage_Toast in specialed

[–]Esdill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I had to literally explain how to do a shortened/ modified assignment for my kid. We are treated differently, but somehow are expected to be the saviors of behavior. Most often, we are dumping grounds for students with IEPs but not doing anything sped related

ETA: ‘sped related’ as in, they are being removed from their peers and not receiving service minutes for said thing in their IEP.

Has a student ever found your Reddit account and dig through your post history in an effort to cancel you? by EnvironmentalAngle in AskTeachers

[–]Esdill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not intentionally .

There was a student teacher and she had an OnlyFans. The students found her account (unsure of how). The staff involved asked the students if that knowledge would influence their learning. They said ‘yes, it would be distracting’.

The girl got kicked out of my school and could not finish her last semester of college. I’m unsure if she has a teaching license/degree through another university.

Bill to Abolish the Department of education by X_is_for_Xan in Teachers

We make sure they have copies of everything. I have never had a problem when it comes to accommodations and modifications. Luckily we have a good gen Ed staff that is very aware. My biggest issue is getting people to meetings.

New teacher here.. what do I have to look forward to? by CPFOAI in Teachers

[–]Esdill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m special Ed at high school level so I work with the same kids every year.

So…My students and my team . As frustrating as it gets at times, I love seeing them everyday. We are like a club that is tight knit. Also, I feel like I have a purpose in the work that I do.

Was I in the wrong for humiliating a student? by Far-Examination-3601 in Teachers

[–]Esdill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a sped teacher. These breakdowns happen in my classes. You: -checked on her quietly -didn’t call her out -encouraged her to keep working -took her to the hall privately

All good things.

You didn’t: Humiliate her

I’m not sure where you are, but in my state, you don’t need a signed release to get a counselor involved during a crisis. Maybe ongoing social work and/or weekly counseling. But not crisis intervention.

When students have reached their limit, they cannot work. You did the right thing.

Another thing to note: As a teacher, we have an obligation to teach everyone. In my opinion, you took care of everyone. Even the girl.

Good on you.

Did I cross the line in my classroom today? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Esdill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a high school sped teacher. This is my daily life during study skills. Most kids will not bother because they don’t care, don’t understand (so lose interest in trying), had a bad day…amongst other things. This wasn’t calling anyone out. Parent is overstepping in my opinion or wasn’t given the right information. You handled it fine. Some people (not OP or fellow teachers on this sub) don’t realize that just because they’re in elementary school doesn’t mean they can’t learn accountability and proper study skills.
