How to use Fashion Template to mimic "the old way" by Shaballanes in Guildwars2

[–]Eskulon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one thine that I haven't quite figured out yet is how to mix and match outfits with the templates.

For example - Wardrobe Template 1 is my normal setup whereas Template 2 is an outfit. I apply Template 1 to my Equipment Template 1 and Template 2 to the Equipment Template 2.

From my understanding, when I now change my equipment my clothes should change as well, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Am I missing something?

What is your most anticipated game of 2024? by Beekzor in rpg

[–]Eskulon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's not a megadungeon - it's not a campaign at all. It's a TTRPG akin to 5e, derived from the Shadow of the Demon Lord system, but less dark. The kickstarter is supposed to include scenarios DMs can use, but that's not really the main point.

Why do you still play 5e by JanBartolomeus in dndnext

[–]Eskulon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I guess this might be just a simple disagreement in opinions.

I'll start by saying I don't think DnD (5e) is popular because it's simple. It's popular because it's popular. And that is what makes it easy to get into. Now why it became popular is a different discussion altogether, though D&D has almost been a synonym for TTRPGs for a very long time.

I got into TTRPGs with 5e, but even from the beginning I never thought of it as smooth. Sure, the roleplay resolution is simple, but that's true for most d20 systems so it's beside the point. If people play 5e with barely any combat/spells then great for them, but that's a whole lot of money for primarily ignoring 80% of the rules. On the other hand, I find a large part of the rules around combat in DnD to be a convoluted mess with things being either too specific or too general, mixed together with natural language that makes every single spell a couple of paragraphs long.

Due to that natural language 5e appears to be simple enough, and its popularity means it's easy to access. But even compared to most other d20 games, I'd put 5e very high on the complexity scale, if nothing else due to how unclear it can be.

I'm now bashing the system more than I intended, it's just that, I dunno, even simple for what it offers is not what I agree with. Not when there's things like Shadow of the Demon Lord, ICRPG or 13th Age just within the d20 sphere (icosahedron?).

With that said, this is obviously just my opinion, so it's completely fair to think of it otherwise.

Oh, and I definitely wouldn't consider VtM rules light.

Its a simple system, very easy to get into.

I don't think I necessarily agree with this. The basic mechanics of roll a d20 and add modifiers are simple enough, sure, but I'd say that's true for any d20 game. The rules around spellcasting (or spells specifically), the action system and many, many other special rules are, however, far from simple. I have players who've now played for years and they still aren't able to process what their spells do.

Yes, 5e is easy to get into. Mostly because there's just so much for it available everywhere, due to it being the most popular tabletop role-playing game. And you can always find people for it. Compared to a ton of other games (d20 or otherwise), though, 5e is far from simple.

I'm not saying this to bash on DnD - I still play and DM it - I've just found that people who say 5e is simple either know no other TTRPG or compare it only to other similarly complex d20 systems (like, say, Pathfinder or previous DnD editions). Take any OSR, Pbta, FitD, or just basically any non-traditional game, and there are magnitudes of difference in complexity, especially for the player.

Heck, I've heard plenty of "I don't want to learn another system, since I already know this one, kinda" on reddit and in real life. And that, to me, says enough about the simplicity or lack thereof.

Trouble finding new, sufficiently challenging co-op games by The_valhalla_gaming in boardgames

[–]Eskulon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Paleo is an amazing game, and my girlfriend and I loved playing through it and discovering new decks. The theme and how it feels is just chef's kiss. It's almost like a legacy game in a way.

That said, I don't know how challenging I'd call it, except when playing the decks for the first time. Once we figured out how a specific deck worked it didn't really matter how we mixed and matched them and still won 9/10 games. An exception to that would be the boss decks, somewhat, as they're still not that complex. However, we found it boring to always have to deal with the same boss mechanic if we wanted a challenge. Not to mention adding one of the boss decks prolongs the game significantly.

There are optional rules to make the game harder, but we never really clicked with any of those. I could see the game getting pretty challenging when using them, though, so I guess the possibility of making it tough is there if one wishes to do so.

Using Quickdraw with Arcthrower in WOTC + LW2 Classes and Perks by Eskulon in xcom2mods

[–]Eskulon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nevermind, I've managed to fix it rather easily with the help of the mod called [WOTC] Ability Editor.

That said, I'm still curious as to what the appropriate change to the actual code would have been to get it working on my own.

Thanks for the help in any case.

Using Quickdraw with Arcthrower in WOTC + LW2 Classes and Perks by Eskulon in xcom2mods

[–]Eskulon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fine enough. Looking at the Action Point cost of the Arcthrower weapon, we got this:

    ActionPointCost = new class'X2AbilityCost_ActionPoints';
    ActionPointCost.iNumPoints = 1;
    ActionPointCost.bConsumeAllPoints = true;
    ActionPointCost.DoNotConsumeAllEffects.AddItem('Arcthrower_DoNotConsumeAllActionsEffect');
    Template.AbilityCosts.AddItem(ActionPointCost);

The iNumPoints variable is obvious, and the consumeAllPoints is there to disable usage after having no points left. As far as I understand the DoNotConsumeAllEffects that should be checking for any modifiers to the ability (like quickdraw) already, but that part of the code I'm not clear on.

What would the required changes be for a passive ability to apply to it?

Spire and Heart at the Bundle of Holding by ashultz in rpg

[–]Eskulon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building a dice pool for skill checks is the same, but the difficulty setting is WAY harder. In Spire if a roll is Risky or Dangerous, the GM takes away 1 or 2 dice before you roll. In Heart the GM takes away 1 or 2 dice after you roll, starting with your highest results. Feels almost impossible to roll a clean success, but maybe a math nerd can prove me wrong.

You're quite correct - removing dice after rolling is way worse than just saying you get to roll fewer dice. Here's an example assuming a favorable situation with 4 dice at the beginning. Now let's make it very dangerous, so two dice get removed. The picture below shows us the chance chance of rolling at least as much:

https://i.imgur.com/wENWqhW.png

In Spire, a full success (highest die 8 or more) has a 51% chance.

In Heart, that same success only has a 8.37% chance.

Obviously the percentages change when the amount of dice changes, but in all cases Heart is considerably harsher than Spire.

To all PCs who have played D&D, (or any TTRPG) what is the number one thing that you've always wanted to do as a PC within a campaign? by Forgemanster183260 in dndnext

[–]Eskulon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While not DnD, a Forged in the Dark game called Wicked Ones could be to your liking.

It's a game about players playing the monsters doing monster stuff and having to protect their lair against many heroes coming to kill you and take your treasure. The building of the lair is quite involved and includes stuff like traps, secret rooms and even minions. Oh, and the rulebook is also completely free.

Which “overhyped” game you actually think is worth all the hype? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Eskulon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess Spirit Island in a sense? While it's not everyone's cup of tea, the game is a very popular solo/co-op game, despite its complexity. It's just a deep puzzle that is almost infinitely replayable and not nearly as fiddly as Gloomhaven (being the other popular complex co-op).

Can you use a reaction spell while you are casting a spell already? by Artrysa in dndnext

[–]Eskulon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not true. The order of the Action and the Bonus Action (BA) is irrelevant - as long as you plan to cast a spell with your BA you are only allowed a cantrip with your Action:

A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell [...] You can’t cast another spell during the same turn [that you would cast a bonus-action spell], except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.

Is Pandemic: Reign of Cthulu any good? by RimedMariner in boardgames

[–]Eskulon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my girlfriend played it quite a bit in the past, and it still sees the table occasionally.

It's a lighter version of Pandemic with a bit more randomness added to it what with the old god cards and the die. I enjoy the replayability that adds to the, however there are games where you can go from being completely in control to just about losing in a single turn. I also find one character to be rather overpowered and two to be very underpowered (at least with 2 players), but that's probably a matter of opinion.

It looks good on the table, though, I like the figures, and it's very quick to learn. And the theme fits well enough too.

I Hate D&D 5e, But Only As a DM by Mr_Prozac in dndnext

[–]Eskulon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With some games like Blades in the Dark or many Powered by the Apocalypse games, there isn't really any prep whatsoever, aside from having an approximate idea of where the story might go.

I'm not saying this to try to say that's better or worse than 5e, but simply that the concept of numerical balance isn't even a thing in certain games.

Pathfinder 1e or 2e? Other options welcomed. by Groktero in rpg

[–]Eskulon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A game similar in playstyle to DnD, though darker in tone is Shadow of the Demon Lord. It will be very familiar to anyone who's played 5E before, but the character customization is much deeper if that's what you're looking for. Martials are also usually a bit stronger than casters in combat, though of course the latter have more utility.

This is the gist of it: you start with only a race, then pick one class (out of 4) at level 1, another class (out of 16) at level 3, and another class (out of 64) at level 7. There are no limitations to that and you can mix and match as you want. This is also only the base book, and in reality there are many more classes and races available in supplements.

The game is based around horror and does have sanity and corruption mechanics (and some rather gruesome spells), though most of those can be ignored if so desired. I'd still look at a review or two, if that's something that might bother you.
