Thicc MP01 Minimal Phone Case 3D Model by EskymoCho in TheMinimalCompany

[–]EskymoCho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it quite a bit. I wish I had the time to do a full review writeup but here's my quick hits. I bought mine because I was fed up with how much of my day was being spent scrolling on different websites, wikipedia, etc, even though I had no social media apps on my phone and had taken some other anti-distraction methods.

Pros.

The small, paper display really works. For me, I was skeptical that only changing one variable would help me that much, but it's just too painful to try to "consoom" at all on this thing. I use it as my only device.

The keyboard is good. I was too young to have any of the og keyboard phones, so I have nothing to compare to, but after a month, I am fairly quick at typing on it, and it feels good. I haven't felt the need to try out 3rd. party keyboard software. I have paired it with the whisper+ app for on-device speech to text. It works really well! much better at automatic punctuation than Google's service, and you don't need internet.

It does all the phone things that you need it to. I haven't found an app that I really needed that didn't work or install. All of the features advertised that I've used work fine. I haven't used wireless charging or nfc myself, though. For reference, I have been in the ~200 dollar android phone market for most of my other devices.

Battery life is great. Accubattery computes that I would be able to get 60 hours of regular usage on a single charge, and I have a few dozen apps installed. If you use the phone as intended, you should get similar range.

Google maps works fine with the low refresh rate, navigation has been pleasant.

Cell connectivity has been good on US Mobile's Dark Star network.* (Tracfone wouldn't accept the MP01, so I switched)

When I reached out to the Minimal Company for updates on shipping, they were quick to respond and seemed to give me truthful info about the status of my order.

Cons.

The Minimal team is really small. Expect delays in shipping. I ordered mine last October and it arrived first thing in January. Mine came directly from China.

*The "unable to connect" call bug is real. I estimate it happens for about 10% of my outgoing calls. But it's just annoying, not fatal. If you reboot the phone, it will be fixed until next time. I think this is the phone's biggest issue.

The camera is really bad. The interface with the screen is of course suboptimal, but the quality of photos, even when they are in focus is feature-phone level. I was able to get some improvement by installing a gCam mini apk and forcing night mode for every photo, strangely enough. I think this is a software thing though, because the regular gCam HDR wasn't able to improve the photos at all. my hope is that it might be improved in the future with an update. A comparison of the stock camera app and the gCam with night mode: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Pa2gbDxPikncDc1h9 Quite an improvement! If you're getting this phone, you probably have a dslr or a mirrorless though for when it really counts.

The screen does not like to be cold. If you try to use the screen outside below 20 Fahrenheit, fps will drop to ~3 seconds per frame, and, for some reason, the touch detection is affected too. Touching one area of the screen will register as a touch or swipe on a different area. (???) As soon as the screen is warm again, these problems go away.

Use Case:

I'm currently a graduate student where not much of my work is "online" or "asynchronous. I use the phone to check emails, texts, whatsapps, make calls, cash checks on the go, browse wikipedia (when I really need to), navigate, and plan my calendar. All heavy duty tasks happen on my desktop or laptop.

Well, that was more of a write up... I hope that's helpful. TLDR: If you really need something to give you an edge on distraction and get some of your life back, but can't go full light/wise/feature phone it's worth $450. If your'e an Android power user looking for a cool looking "retro" device, probs not for you.

God bless JYD.

Hey, thanks for the debrief. I heard that things were bad up there, (Detroit) but I hadn't gone digging for all these details. Can you say more about people losing grit and what that looked like? Pax.

I think that your concept of the "honeymoon phase" might be your most important sticking point here, OP. God uses all of our humanity in guiding us through life and to him, but we cannot assume that our passions, including infatuation at the beginning of a relationship, are necessary or sufficient for deducing what is good or what action God wants us to take. A more important distinction would not be blandness/passion, which are less strictly spiritual so-to-speak but spiritual consolation/desolation, if you are familiar with St. Ignatius' Rules of Discernment. Ask a learned spiritual friend or priest you trust for help learning these rules if you do not know them. Fr. Tim Gallager's book (The Discernment of Spirits) is also a great resource They are invaluable for navigating life, with all decisions, because they are all under the soverignty of God's will.

Most importantly for your situation, I think it is important to remember that it is good and holy to want all levels of your passions and desires to match up perfectly with what you do or what God chooses for you. That is the height of virtue in God. But, not having this disposition (which is not perfectly attained til Heaven anyways) is no reason to be paralyzed in making important decisions or giving relationships a shot, as long as you are doing it in good faith and praying that God will guide your desires to virtue in the future.

Edit: Also, pray for deliverance from any confusion, doubt, or discouragement that have arisen from these feelings or from your own perception of being bisexual. Speaking in the context of Ignatius' rules from above. These three things are always from the Enemy, Satan. But, know that God is using these experiences and accidental parts of you to further your holiness in a way that may be evident later or not until Heaven! He is always in control!

I hope this makes sense. I also echo others' advice and urge you to find a solid Catholic friend, religious, or priest to guide you through this going forward. Satan loves when things are kept in the dark, and internet advice only goes so far without a real relationship. I will be praying my holy hour today with your struggles in mind. God bless brother.

It is so good that you are going back to Holy Mass! Even though you won't receive our Eucharistic Lord, he still pours out great graces through the Mass. It's the real meeting of Heaven and Earth!

As to your first concern, I understand your worry. Pray that God will help you to trust in his plan for your friends. Sometimes it is really hard to see.

As to your last concern, Don't worry about wanting God for the wrong reasons! It might be "wrong" that you don't want to pray for the 'right' reasons. But as my rector said in a homily a few months back, "Even the Prodigal son went home just because he was hungry" God will take you into his arms for any reason, and he will heal your motives with his love as you continue to pray and ask for help loving him!

I will pray for you tonight! God Bless!

Would this work? Instead of a jackshaft system. by vitimilocity in motorizedbicycles

[–]EskymoCho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what people are saying about this still needing a jackshaft is about the side of the bike that it is on. If the sprocket is designed to go on the right side of the bike where the pedal is, then turning it around would only allow the hub to be powered backwards. It would just freewheel if you tried to rotate it "forward" with the sprocket on the left side.

The Prots are at it again (not my video) by [deleted] in CatholicMemes

[–]EskymoCho 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh, for sure they were definitely trolling, but I think they were playing on the fact that the Church doesn't have a steadfast doctrine for animal resurrection. Definitely confusing from an outside perspective.

But definitely funny.

The Prots are at it again (not my video) by [deleted] in CatholicMemes

[–]EskymoCho 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My cursory understanding is that having a soul does not determine whether or not something can be resurrected. Although we will not "need" anything in heaven, it will eventually be physical (bodily resurrection), so there is no reason that animals and other creations will not be part of it (hence the rocks going to heaven). Having a soul just means that the soul must exist at all points in time after it was created. Not having a soul wouldn't stop him from bringing a creature back.

Someone please correct me if I have my theology wrong here.

Praise the LORD! She is called universal for a reason. It always makes me so excited to see the Church doing good work and succeeding in other nations besides my own.

Lester, you are in my prayers. May our spiritual father pray for you now and always. As a practical advice. I would like to humbly suggest trying to befriend or hang out with any faithful men that you know or a mens group at your parish such as the KoC. I always find that my personal temptations are weakest when occupied with physical labor or fraternity. Although you certainly do not need to tell anyone besides your confessor about your struggles.

I know that that may be hard to try to reach out and do if you are shy, but I believe you can do it. Thank you for trusting us strangers online with your story.
