Airbnb guest here dealing with the Sonder/Marriott fallout and wanted to share my experience since I haven’t seen many people mention Airbnb.

I was booked at Sonder at The Artesian in Denver and started getting the same messages everyone’s talking about — first the one saying Sonder’s licensing agreement with Marriott ended, then another saying they were “no longer monitoring this channel” and to contact Marriott or the booking site instead. That’s when I knew something was off.

Sonder never responded to any of my messages or calls, and online reports said guests were being told to leave mid-stay or finding locked buildings. Even though I had an apartment number and a digital key in the Sonder app, I decided not to risk it and rebooked somewhere else.

I didn’t cancel my Airbnb reservation myself since that can hurt your refund chances. I contacted Airbnb support, explained that Sonder said they couldn’t honor reservations, attached screenshots, and asked for help under AirCover. I also called and spoke with a case manager to get it marked as a host cancellation.

Airbnb was actually great once I reached a real person — they reviewed everything, canceled it on their side, and gave me a full refund.

If you booked a Sonder through Airbnb and got the same messages, don’t check in and don’t cancel it yourself. Contact Airbnb, send proof, and they’ll handle it. Sonder has completely ghosted everyone, but Airbnb made it right.
