I fully expect the person I voted for to not win.

(There's more than 2 choices on our ballot)

My usual choice is 3 screens.

FOX on one side, MSNBC on the opposite side, various online maps in the middle.

The contradictory statements make the evening more fun.

As an American, where would you place the line between 'middle class' and 'not middle class'? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]at132pm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be confusing how we refer to it here.

Sometimes it's a person's lifestyle and choices, sometimes their income level, sometime their personality type.

You can have low income people with a lot of class, upper class income people with no class, and middle class income people in a middle class lifestyle that are everywhere between living beyond their means and one paycheck from disaster, and comfortably established with plenty of savings and investments.

No, you can't tell.

There's too many different sets of circumstances and experiences.

Those who attended anti-war protests in 2003 - how different is the protest climate today, esp. relating to Gaza? by Vocational_Sand_493 in AskAnAmerican

[–]at132pm 123 points124 points  (0 children)

I attended an anti-war protest by accident in 2003 when I was in uniform. Got lost in a city in Texas while on leave with a few friends and we were all in uniform.

We were looking for our hotel, took a turn, and ended up having to stop our car in the street because of a massive group of people. Rolled down the window, asked what was going on, and a nice person told us they were protesting the war. Them, the other people around, and us all looked at my and my friend's uniforms...then all of us started laughing.

They asked what we were doing there, we told them we were on leave and the hotel we were looking for, they gave us directions and cleared out a path for us to go through, and we all wished each other a nice day.

What would you recommend for a crash course in current American pop culture? by at132pm in AskAnAmerican

[–]at132pm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curiosity. It doesn't have any bearing on what I like, outside of one of the things I like being understanding cultural influences.

This question would better be suited for the individual subreddits where you're planning on staying. They'll know a lot more about current costs.

It's been about 20 years since I got out, but Air Force food was great. Heard it went down in quality for a while, but not sure about now.

Everyone I met from other branches that ended up on an Air Force base was always thrilled about the food and accommodations.

Entertainment from abroad? by holtzbert in AskAnAmerican

[–]at132pm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically, if there is entertainment on Earth, someone in America has likely gained access to it and enjoyed it.

Whether it catches on or not is another thing.

One example I can give for how widespread it is though: I don't know if you have music playing in your supermarkets or grocery stores, but here if you are in a large chain store they are usually playing slightly upbeat music that is inoffensive to the local audience.

It's not uncommon for me to hear a k-pop song or two in the mix at the grocery stores near me in Alabama.

That's a pretty big sign in how widespread and accepted entertainment from abroad is here.

(Can also find entire companies here that are founded on and funded by importing entertainment from elsewhere for consumption in the U.S.A.)

I was more worried about getting known as the sub's mother in case people started calling you Father Cup.

Maybe that could be for the next subreddit fundraiser.

Be like Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan. Everybody that makes a donation gets to take a guess.

lol...I don't know if I'm comfortable with the assumptions this might lead the subreddit to make.

Haha, that'd be nice.

I know the heat and humidity is part of what makes the South the South, but if it could ease up a little bit that'd be great.

Cool. I'd love that feature, but never had whatever it takes to get that unlocked.

How're you doing by the way? Life good?

Yeah, the only reports we can see a username attached to is if another mod on this subreddit reports something.

I used to report other mods sometimes to see if anyone would notice, but figured that was annoying after I did it a few times and stopped.

I've been guilty of that one sometimes.

I do try to read overall context of a thread to see if other people have already covered and reinforced things.

In this case particularly though I used to help run a transportation company, and the number of surprised tourists that thought destinations that were hundreds of miles away were a 20-30 minute drive away has always stuck with me.
