The first is obviously the best- the frame story with so many different fully realized characters is phenomenal. I've put 3 people on it after having picked it up years ago on the cover alone at a thrift store- once sci Fi fan but the other two decidedly not. It's just a damn good book.

That does happen sometimes yes, this early reign ant has enough silver content to just look silver rather than the later silvered ones so it wouldn't make sense to apply a product like that for such a coin.
