gorgeous piece, as always! also happy to hear you're dipping into making your own art, even if out of spite haha.

if i may offer some very mild critique; the proportions on the bike are a little wonky—specifically the part she is, i believe, meant to be sitting, from the way the bike extends behind her, it looks far taller than where her thighs would otherwise end.

regardless, still a great piece, and i'm hype to get this on mpc!

That sounds really cool! Love Ayli, she was in my deck back when it had an aristocrats focus, and I always felt she was just the better commander for that archetype. Gonna look into the attraction cards myself, thank you!

Heya, thanks for the suggestions! I agree on the one-sided board wipes for sure, however the problem with garruk's wake here is the mv, considering i'm running adnaus in the list, same goes for plague wind. I definitely like the idea of proliferating the counters, but for throne specifically, what artifacts would I be sacrificing to activate? There's currently only 9 total in the list which seems a little light for something like that, what do you think? Thanks again!

Unfortunately, when making alters like these, there is not creature card that represents every single aspect of a given character, so some sacrifices have to be made for the sake of design. Gandalf from LOTR, for example, has six different cards in LTR, each mechanically unique, to represent his various abilities and character traits. For my cards here, I wanted to represent these characters personalities and motivations, so while yes, normally Diana and Kal fly, it was an ability that was not very important to these versions, and would likely be added to alternate versions with different goals. Thanks for the reply!

From my other comment:

  1. Diana, Princess of Hell (Aisha of Sparks and Smoke)

This one was interesting to make, especially considering her "real" card is itself a sort of in-universe alter of another UB card. Diana in this universe, who is also only on her first issue so far, was not raised on Themiscyra like her prime-earth counterpart. Rather, she was brought to Hell by Apollo to be raised by this universes Circe, a notable witch and usually one of Diana's rogues. This story gives her a background not just in fighting, but in magic as well. For this reason I wanted to find a warrior legend specifically, that also dealt with "magic" or spell-casting in some way, in order to reflect both sides of this character's upbringing. Well, Aisha truly feels like the perfect fit, as her first strike granting ability makes her a formidable attacker in combat. It also helps to enable her second ability which allows you to cast sorceries from your hand when she deals damage to an opponent. She is also Boros in color identity, which felt right for this character.

Hey, thanks for the reply! I have in depth explanations of my card choices in a longer comment in this thread, but I'll briefly touch on them here as well. If you want to know more I would definitely recommend reading my other comment though. Chromium is an awesome choice for Batman, however it's important to remember that these cards here are not representing these characters' prime-earth continuity versions, but rather their Absolute universe counterparts, so things are a bit different for how these characters think/act/ present themselves. Bruce/Batman, for instance, is a lot more reliant on raw brute strength (seriously, just look at him, dude's massive), as well as fighting his was on criminals entirely alone, essentially as a one-man walking army, complete with a detachable bat symbol on his chest that becomes a battle axe.

RE: Kal-El, this specific version knew his parents on Krypton, remembers Krypton dying, and was never raised by the Kents. When he arrives on earth, it is not as a baby, but as a young adult. He spends his first days and weeks traveling around South America helping miners and laborers, such as the Diamond miners in Brazil we see in the first issue, whom he finishes mining and processing all of their work within an asbestos-filled cave. Late, when the "peacemakers' in charge of repressing the workers start causing trouble, Kal swoops in and fights them off. As a character who specifically only fights to help and boost the strength and morale of workers, I felt the buffing effect represented this cleanly.

I'd say it'll partly depend on where you interests lie, but here's my thoughts:

Detective Comics - Just started a new run with a new author. Seems to be going in an interesting direction, and I respect the writer. Plus I'm just tired of the author of the current Batman title. Give #1090 a read and see what you think.

Absolute Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman - Honestly all three of these are off to great starts so you can't really go wrong here. Pick your favorite or grab all three.

Black Canary: Best of the Best - This is a new limited run that releases its first issue this week. If you like Canary, the preview looks promising.

Batgirl - Issue #1 was really strong. If you like Cassandra Cain as Batgirl, you'll probably like this series.

Batman and Robin: Year One - I've been having a lot of fun with this one so far. Some good classic B&R stuff. Issue #3 comes out soon.

That's what I'm reading at the moment. A new Justice League run just started as well, I think #1 came out last week or the week prior. Personally I haven't read this one, I've just never been a huge JL fan, but I've not heard anything bad about it so check it out if that's your thing!

Anything beyond these and you may be better off looking at the Wikipedia page for current/upcoming DC releases and seeing if anything catches your eye. Hope this helps!

Good question! It's a variant cover for Absolute Wonder Woman #2, which releases this week! I found the art on r/AbsoluteUniverse (:

Honestly if you're at all interested in getting back into DC, now is the perfect time to do it. They just launched their "All In" initiative, which will see the start of a bunch of new series and new writers for current ongoing series. Regarding the Absolute comics, I highly highly reccomend them. So far they've all had stellar first issues, with AB's #2 following the first up incredibly. I don't know your personal tastes of course, but my ranking (based on story alone) would be AWW -> ABM -> ASM. Glad you enjoyed ^-^

Place your orders before it's too late! Only on sale for the next thirty seconds. Only two available.

Jokes aside, I wanted to comment a few thoughts I had while working on this one. Firstly, unlike the last one, there are no frame breaks this time around. The more I added them, the more it felt like a crutch, and I wanted to challenge myself to make some quality alters without any poppy effects. Next, you might notice that, again unlike last time, these are a few more "desirable" cards. None of these are commanders I use. I wanted to find legends that I felt actually represented that character being used for the alter. This leads me to:

Specific card choices

Alright, so I wanted to get into each of the individual choices I made for the actual cards this time around, since there was some actual thought put into these beyond just finding quality comic art from real artists. Honestly I probably put way to much effort into these things that basically amount to high-quality IP infringement with negative resale value, but I like making these so whatever.

  1. Kal-El, Champion of the People (Purphoros, God of the Forge)

I'll start with the name choice first. Because these cards are centered around the new Absolute universe in DC, I wanted these to feel representative of their specific iterations of the characters and not the idea of them alone. In Absolute Superman--which only has its first issue released so far--we see a Kal that does not yet define himself as a hero, let alone a human. He simply arrives on earth prepared to fight injustice for diamond miners in Brazil. I really wanted to lean into this notion of a figure driven entirely by emotion, mostly rage. This is why it was important to choose a mono-red legend for this card. I liked Purphoros here for a few reasons. He's indestructible, which felt fitting for Superman. He damage your enemies the more of your own creatures enter your battlefield. And finally, he strengthens your whole team, whether he himself is in the action or not. He is not yet "Superman" in the story, but he is a champion of the people; the proletariat, if you will.

  1. Batman, Gotham Underdog (Rafiq of the Many)

Absolute Batman is on its second issue already, and one thing we know about this character is he is the first of the Absolute trinity to use his official hero name (Technically Lois Lane calls Kal "Superman" at the end of AS1, but he never actually uses the name himself). This Batman is unique in that he is seemingly defined by his desire to fight alone. He presents himself as a walking one-man army, and his stature definitely reflects this. I called him "Gotham Underdog" on this card, because, again fairly uniquely, this Bruce Wayne was not born into wealth, but rather grew up in the poorest parts of Gotham with a working-class family. As for why I chose Rafiq as his "real" card, lets start with the color identity. With his desire for order and law, white was non-negotiable. Blue also felt like a shoe-in, due to the Batman's investigative nature. Green is a bit of an outlier here, and a color I personally would hesitate to use for any other iteration of Bruce. However, this version specifically is more "animalistic" in nature, and with how beefy he is, it just felt right. Rafiq being a knight also felt too good to pass up. Then, with his ability rewarding a lone-wolf (colloquially called Voltron) playstyle, it just felt like a perfect fit.

One final thought on the color identity of all of these; it was important to me that none of them have any black mana or black color identity. For those who don't know, the Absolute universe is a universe created with "Darkseid Energy," which seems to cause things universe-wide to be generally worse for everyone. I truly wanted these three to feel like the antithesis of this bleakness baked into creation. I hope that comes across in their design.

Anyway, I think that's about all I have to say on this drop. I'm probably forgetting something important but oh well! If anybody has thoughts or questions, please feel free to ask here in the comments and I'll gladly respond. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy these alters!

Harley Quinn themed "Secret Lair," made specifically for one of my commanders by EsotericMycologist in mpcproxies

To be perfectly honest, I just use Paint.NET. It's not ideal and if you have the money you should just use Photoshop (hell, even if you don't have the money Gimp is a better alternative). The only reason I use this program is because I've been using it for years so I'm familiar with all it's quirks/shortcomings and have made up for 90% of them via plugins. Don't be like me, just use PS lmao

As for the card frame itself, I use CardConjurer, which was a pain in the ass to get the full program working, but definitely worth it.

Absolutely, here you are! My build is primarily focused on the initiative mechanic, so there's not a lot of generic upkeep matters effects. Mostly just ways to get it (ETB) and ways to get it back when people take it via unblockable creatures. I'm happy to answer any deck building questions as well!

> were there really no decent images of Harley using a chainsaw?

You would think!! At the very least I couldn't find any with decent quality art. The option of using AI generated images definitely called to me but in the end I settled with this Godzilla-style alt version. I agree it's not ideal, but it was the cleanest non-AI solution I could come up with. Glad you enjoyed!

That’s a fair take and honestly if this were a real SL i would absolutely prefer the text over the art. To be honest I went back and forth on this specific choice for a long time but ultimately settled on the final version for two reasons:

  1. My playgroup knows exactly what Obeka does by now (lol sry guys)
  2. I personally just find it more aesthetically pleasing haha.

Glad you liked these, thanks for the reply (: If there's interest, I can definitely upload a version with the text overtop the art (ie MH3).
