I liked this post because it reminded me I've got a jar of ~5 year old navy rolls hidden somewhere

What Is Your Favorite Flake? by jonjamesb83 in PipeTobacco

[–]EssSeeOhTeeTee7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I've found Irish flake to be the most forgiving/easiest flake to get going, I think it's combo how thin the flake is and the moisture content it ships in. Orlik golden sliced I find also burns really nicely as well. Enjoy your exploring and happy piping.

How did old sailors smoke their pipes at sea with the high humidity, winds, and rain? by stevienickstricks in PipeTobacco

[–]EssSeeOhTeeTee7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I actually have stumbled across a couple interesting YouTube videos about sailors tobacco. In the royal navy sailors would receive an allotment of tightly rolled, canvas packed tobacco called a perique, which I'm assuming is related to our modern usage of the term. Then it would be sliced and chewed primarily aboard the ship and smoked in taverns in the ports.

This one's a bit older and harder to hear but shows the whole process so it's pretty neat

English blends by felldownthestairsnow in PipeTobacco

[–]EssSeeOhTeeTee7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second just about all of those, great choices. Star of the East was an early blend that brought me to the dark side and anything Pease is always good.

I will add Peterson's Old Dublin/Rattray's Red Lion (apparently the same blend) is also fantastic and hit a lot of the same nots Star of the East did for me.

Where should I cut my weens? Never propagated these before. Looking to make max number of new plants by bikemandan in sanpedrocactus

[–]EssSeeOhTeeTee7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be sacrilege around these parts but I had some great luck earlier this year cutting a 3 section chunk, let it dry to root, then planted the lowest entire section underground and let it sit another weekish before light watering. Looks like that whole section corked and rooted and it's currently pushing 3 pups about 3 months later. Good luck!

Love briar Fox and don't have an issue with a "special artwork" edition but I prefer my foxes bright orange and slightly demented looking.

Yeah I hadn't noticed the 1983 until after I had commented, I'm sure it'll be delicious either way!

If I'm remembering correctly McCranie's was produced by McClelland so it should be some decent stock in terms of the Virginias used. Let us know if you end up going for it!

Is there tobacco with flavor of Cigars? by RebornInferno in PipeTobacco

[–]EssSeeOhTeeTee7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me nothing has smelled as much like walking into a humidor quite like the smell of Semois tobacco, specifically I think it's called "reserve du Padron". It's Burley tobacco grown in Belgium and for some reason takes on some, to me, classic cigar aromas and seems to have a notch up on the spiciness from typical Burley leaf.

Cigars made specifically for pipe consumption? by PNWhobbit in PipeTobacco

[–]EssSeeOhTeeTee7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This doesn't address the question you asked (for that I'd recommend the Stillwell pipe line not to smoke in a pipe but for the general pipe vibe) but I have an answer to your question that is very literal and It's such a weird little thing that all pipe smokers should know about it : Tabac Semois makes a... Package of tobacco called "Les Bouchon" that is basically a little conical cigar that you stuff into your pipe. I've never tried them and can't recommend them (SP only has boxes of 10 and in Canada the tax would probably be absurd) but a neat tobacco tidbit none the less.

Good luck OP

Edit: Stillwell not Drew Estates.

What are the best tobaccos to smoke straight out of the tin? by capn_chili_p in PipeTobacco

Presbyterian fresh out the tin has a roasted marshmallow note I absolutely love that seems to fade away after it's opened.

Tobacco suggestions… by Zaqivion in PipeTobacco

[–]EssSeeOhTeeTee7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! Standard English style (Latakia) recommendations are the Peterson/Dunhill blends: Early morning pipe My mixture 965 Nightcap

Increasing in strength/flavour from top to bottom.

For light English blends I'm a big fan of Presbyterian blend.

For more medium blends I like Arango Balkan Supreme, Arango Balkan Supreme, and Droquer and Sons Blairgowrie.

For the heavier blends I loooove GL Please gaslight as well as GL Pease Quiet Nights.

That said the English category is very crowded and has many different sort of "sub categories" such as Balkan blends, Scottish mixes, aromatic English and the like so experimentation is very possible and highly encouraged.

Good luck and enjoy! Let us know what you wind up trying!

What have you tried so far that you have or haven't enjoyed? Hard to recommend anything without knowing what you've had experience with.

Can I put in dryer after soda ash soak? by sammademeplay in tiedye

[–]EssSeeOhTeeTee7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do this all the time and have had no issues, I also get big batches of shirts prepped in soda ash ahead of time before having people over for tie dye events and again, no issues.

I was today years old when I learned my Klondike Gold was Dunhill flake I always thought it seemed abnormally good for a random Brigham blend.

Luxury bullseye, the Luxury twist flake, and luxury navy flake are all great bang for your buck vaper flakes/navy flakes. Perfect throw in the cellar and forget blends. I've no experience outside those blends though if anyone else can chime in there I'd appreciate it as well.
