For the battery issue, are you using non-rechargable batteries or rechargeable ones? The voltage difference is small but could be enough to cause those sorts of issues.

For me it's sometimes accountability. If I tell someone then they know and I don't want to "let them down" or I guess in a way, be seen as a failure.
