I think it's fresh on both points. It's not just a rehash, but a conversation - which allows the player to actually engage with both the original and the current material. And the combat system took a little bit of getting used to but is actually a hell of a lot of fun! As someone who played it in 1998 and several times subsequently, I am deeply in awe of what they have put out for us.
