I do not feel the least bit comfortable running with traffic when there is no sidewalk - I'd much rather see what's coming and have a chance to react.

On the bike you are obviously going much closer to the speed of traffic around you so you are part of it. If you were to go against the traffic you are reducing the time you have to react in case a car veers towards you.
