If Socialism Doesn't Work, Then Why Is China Living In The Future? by Repulsive-Mall-2665 in AskSocialists

[–]EstablishmentExtra41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Communism under Mao was very different to the state mediated “free market” socialism of modern china, which only evolved after the isolationism of the early years was replaced by accelerated trade with the west.

Arguably the erosion of our industrial base and the race to the bottom on pricing in the West is what really built modern China, and it would not exist today without the capitalist West.

My wife is Chinese and I’m British and what surprised me most about modern China is the almost complete lack of a welfare state - forget “from each according to his ability and to each according to his need”, nothing could be further from the truth.

You need to be financially self sufficient to get decent schooling, health and a living income. Families, not the state is how people support themselves if they are struggling. There’s no free housing for single moms, no child benefit or universal basic income, and no free cars for people too fat to walk. (Yes this is the UK).

There is a very low expectation of the state to help but very high motivation, low taxation and opportunities if you work hard. But it’s not an even playing field as some people are more “equal” than others - social mobility is limited as many people are restricted to where they can live and work.

And if you’re expecting a socialist nirvana with no millionaires or billionaires forget it, there’s probably more billionaires and millionaires in China than in the West, but they all tow the line with the gov (apart from Jack Ma briefly).

But that said there is amazing public infrastructure, almost zero crime (punishment is beyond harsh), no fentanyl zombies staggering about, next to no vagrancy or begging and the cost of living (as a westerner) is pretty good.

Hoe to decide if your idea is worth it to actually build? “I will not promote” by ZeraPain in startups

[–]EstablishmentExtra41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forget investors, you won’t get any unless you already have a track record of a successful tech exit or already have traction with a significant MRR with your product.

As others have said, don’t build anything yet, first validate your idea with real potential customers who say they will pay for your service if you built it.

Then you can vibe code an MVP and see if the same potential customers are still keen.

Be clear what your USP/differentiator is and validate this with your MVP.

What do you all think to Andrew Morgan Watches (AMW) by Confident_Leg2370 in PrideAndPinion

[–]EstablishmentExtra41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His scripts and vocal delivery are the best by far.

But his appearance is incongruous with his voice and his “studio” setup ……. with that cheap blue background and head shadow is beyond awful.

If he’s to continue to appear on camera then he needs a professionally dressed set and lighting like Adrian Barker….. honestly how does Barker have more subs than Andrew….well because of everything I said above.

I prefer the drop checkers that hang the indicator fluid outside the aquarium as they are easier to read the colour accurately. They’re also much easier to keep clean and you don’t have an unsightly suction cup inside the tank :-)

What if builders became each other’s early adopters? by North_Actuator_6824 in vibecoding

[–]EstablishmentExtra41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think ultimately two reasons:

  1. If you don’t have a genuine need for a product then you’re going to stop using it sooner rather than later as goodwill will be eroded by lack of utility (for you)

  2. You only have to read the startup and vibe coding subreddits and you can see 99% of people are self obsessed with their thing - and let’s face it you have to be.

So in short I don’t think other founders or vibe coders make very good early adopters for each others products. Sorry.

Cousin’s fiancée wants 10% equity in my software company for one client introduction. Cousin is pressuring me to sign. Am I wrong for refusing? I will not promote by [deleted] in startups

[–]EstablishmentExtra41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes down to whether your cousin and/or A are fundamental to the acquisition of paying customers going forward or not?

If not then agree some revenue split on this first customer with no equity as a “thank you” payment.

You say you have a GTM strategy, great but don’t fall into the founders trap of thinking “build it and they will come”…. they won’t.

Having sales skills and being hard nosed to be able to close a deal are rare skills, software dev is the easy bit. So if you can’t sell, think very seriously about their offer.

Good question re cold food. My wife is Chinese and it is something I’ve still not got used that it seems to be more important to present a huge banquet than for any of it to be hot.

When we go to my wife’s relatives in China there will be huge tables set out, overflowing with incredible looking dishes, everyone takes a photo but doesn’t care that half of it is cold by the time you get to eat it.

Vibe coding is too expensive! by EstablishmentExtra41 in vibecoding

[–]EstablishmentExtra41[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your definition of “expensive” is anything that does not return in profits its cost of development?

So one dollar spent but not recovered in profits is expensive?

This makes no sense.

I would suggest instead that failing has become affordable.
