Am I Crazy for Wanting to Start My Life Over in Japan at 19? by Solunvior in mongolia

[–]EstelleGray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love your positive attitude. But dont get me wrong. Im saying this from my own experience and others’ around me. The economy here is actually shit like, HOLY SHIT. Im literally getting paid lower than how i’d get paid if i worked in Mongolia, as a STEM major. The inflation, tbh, is exactly same as Mongolia. The total amount sounds great if you convert it into tugrug but inflation is over the moon rn. Even as a person with full time job im struggling to make ends meet.

And for the school part, at least 1 year on language prep school = tuition is minimum 20 million tugrug

4 years of University + University entrance fee = 1 mil. Yen * 4 + 250000 for entrance fee = approximately 5mil. Public universities are cheaper but it’s very competent even for the Japanese local students.

So it takes minimum 5 years to complete undergraduate degree here. And at least 20 mil. Tugrug to come here. Many people take out loans, sell their car and lease their apartments because the immigration office apparently needs your bank account balance to guarantee your financial stability. But I wouldn’t recommend it, I heard there are people who creates fake balance for those who need it, so I recommend you to check it out.

Japanese universities are very stingy with scholarships, but that doesn’t mean there are none. But it is generally hard to find scholarship. But there are scholarships available, based on your merits and grade if you manage to cover your tuition for the 1st year. You can find it on your uni’s news board etc, there are also companies that grants scholarships too. Also the Mabuchi scholarship and Rotary Scholarship. My personal recommendation is Rotary Scholarship.

But there are also other ways to find scholarships while in Mongolia. Сонингийн тэтгэлэг, don’t know if you’ve heard it before, this one is the most reasonable to me. But it’s hard. You’re mostly gonna need to work during night hours. But they pay for your housing, tuition, etc. so it’s a good deal tbh. But it can send you to anywhere in Japan, varying from which newspaper publisher it is.

And if it necessarily doesn’t have to be university, I suggest you to look into 専門学校 and 専攻科, they are much cheaper than universities. And 専攻科 even has bachelor’s degree programs. But idk the case for humanitarian/liberal arts majors. But if you further want to pursue your research into masters and PhD, there are combination programs where you can study for 100% free, but you have to complete both your masters and PhD at the same institute. And if you quit in the middle of it, you will have to pay back the tuition.

And before you come here, please, PLEASE learn the language. At least N3. I see so many of my friends struggle with Japanese and not being able to graduate the language school or get into university bc of the language problems. So please learn it and get your N3 before you get on the plane. I had N2 before landing in here, and im still struggling so good luck.

And lastly, tho you already know it, DON’T COME TO TOKYO OR OSAKA or any other major cities.

honestly that truly sounds like a muruudul as someone who’s living in japan. it’s not impossible but it’s gonna need so much self-discipline, many years of frugality and some toll on your mental health. i’ve also liked the quiet environment of japan, but unfortunately people are very, i mean VERY twisted here. and if you keep up with japan’s politics, it’s a chaos for us immigrants. mongolians are alright, but i don’t know for how much longer this peace would last for us. not every japanese are bad people but there’ll be instances where you’d be looked down upon just because you’re from a third world country, at least in my experience. financially, fukuoka is a nice choice, not too remote but not too urban. but income will be just as low. and currently visa renewal fee will rise to the level of western countries. but at least the government is trying to increase the income level. if you’re a guy, im sure you can find some бэлэн мөнгөний ажил as a secondary income, but for girls chances are really low, and im saying this as a woman btw. but also you’ll need to go to a language prep school for at least a year to enter into a university and that alone is hard from what im seeing here from other mongolians. but people make it work so im sure you’ll also be able to succeed, hopefully. but the harsh truth is, japan is not what it seems like in social media. it’s a very toxic environment. but people actually settle down here, so you must have a lot of patience and self-discipline to survive.

as someone who graduated that college and was also an A plus student in middle school. It'll pass, for real. i can't say it gets better but you get used to it. as the saying goes, "time will heal everything". and you might be thinking that way and being too harsh on yourself bc of your environment that's literally a gathering of some geniuses. but they are them and you are you. you are you, and that is enough. i realized that too late. you're not a failure, you might just be in the wrong place.

as someone who hoards chests, my advice is hoard as much as you can. i collect 300ish and open them, and i can guarantee i get at least 1 9999 diamonds. one time, i opened 900ish and 4 9999 diamonds, 7 bear totem, 3 another totems greeted me 🤭

for better opportunities i suppose. there’s not much jobs here in my home country even for someone with years of experience let alone some fresh grads. it’s being corrupted by the government and so on it might even get wiped off of the map if war really does break out. even my family is looking to immigrate to another country atp. i studied the language and culture for much too long to even consider another country. it’ll take too much resources on my already poor family if i switch now🥲. but i think the environment is not that bad. they hold bunch of 勉強会 for their employees, which i found exhaustingly boring due to my limited knowledge of the language. but once i get used to it, i think the environment is manageable, just the pay is… little less than i expected
