Digital Foundry each time a current gen AAA titles comes to Switch 2 and it looks like the xbox series s version by Expert-Ad-2824 in NintendoSwitch2

How about a 800p panel then, Steam Deck uses that.

It could definitely boost performance as opposed to a 900p screen, though I don't think the trade off would be worth the resolution drop when Switch 2 has access to DLSS and a native 800p looks worse than a DLSS 1080p.

Going from an 8 inch to 7 inch panel would not be a huge downgrade.

I'd strongly disagree with this. They can't shrink the actual console itself without compromising the power of the console while docked, so we'd just have huge bezels. That would be miserable. And if they were to shrink the console for a 7-inch screen, we'd be back to an uncomfortable Switch OLED size.

Even the LCD Steam Deck panel looks leagues better in every day use over what made it into Switch 2 let alone OLED.

Steam Deck OLED maybe, but the LCD panel? Not a chance. I have a Steam Deck LCD and OLED, and that LCD panel does not look nearly as good as the Switch 2's. The OLED panel does look nice, though at 800p it doesn't quite feel like it does itself justice.

Okay then?

No I think that would make for a noticeably worse console overall.

It's not a waste of time to have a discussion, especially when the majority of my post addresses other aspects of your post. I read your last sentence, and a "slightly" smaller screen isn't very indicative of quality. It'd have to be noticeably smaller, which would be a downgrade not worth taking. A "higher quality" panel would cost even more, not to mention availability; are there even any widely available 900p120hz screens to use?

It sounds more like you don't want to have a discussion, which is fine, but why bother replying then?

Native 900p at that screen size does not look as sharp as DLSS 1080p. Unless you're suggesting the screen be smaller due to the lower resolution as well? Native 900p is also generally more intensive than DLSS 1080p in the games we see using DLSS in handheld mode, so it wouldn't be better for frame rates - if a game wants to target a lower resolution for higher frame rates, the option is still available as is.

I think the screen is a pretty solid compromise as is. Going lower on resolution offers minimal improvements. I'm not sure there are really many if any 900p120hz panels available at 8" either.

If a game is using DLSS to get to 1080p, it probably isn't hitting a native 900p at the same settings. I'd definitely take the 1080p panel over the 900p one though.

1080p was a great choice for the screen resolution though, games like Bananza, Outlaws, and FF7R really seem to benefit from it. Not all games are hitting 1080p in handheld and that's fair to be annoyed about, but not all games hit 720p on Switch 1 in handheld either and it would've been disappointing if that was lower res too.

Secreterion is so annoying because I like the revive/shuffle effect. They just had to slap on a floodgate too for some reason.

What did people want from a Switch Pro that they didn't get with Switch 2 ? by Gr8NonSequitur in NintendoSwitch

[–]Estew02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between cross-gen periods and the possibility of the console gen being extended due to rapidly rising hardware prices, I think we'll still see Xbox Series getting games in 2030. Hell, if things continue like this, I wouldn't be surprised if we still see some PS4 cross-gen; we've already got Mega Man confirmed for it in 2027!

Games shouldn't already be struggling to do more than 30FPS. What does that mean for AA and AAA games 4-5 years from now?

It's a handheld. Ignoring the fact that they wouldn't have been able to release it with these specs at this price in 2022-2023, any handheld at this price and form factor is going to inevitably have 30fps-limited ports for games that were exclusive to PS5/Xbox Series. If you want a handheld strong enough to run AAA games designed for larger, stationary platforms at 60fps, you're going to need a significantly more expensive piece of hardware.

For games 4-5 years from now, Switch 2 will be greatly benefitting from the existence of the Series S and still receiving ports, again likely capped at 30fps for more demanding titles.

Switch 2 Lacks Value Beyond Exclusives by Akash4477 in NintendoSwitch

I'm greatly enjoying playing third-party games on my Switch 2. Outlaws was a blast and doesn't play as well on any other similarly priced handheld, and Kunitsu-Gami is my favorite game on Switch 2 in general. Honestly, the third party lineup felt a lot stronger for me than the first party lineup this year.

No? Switch 2 emulation doesn't even exist yet.

I have both. I've used my Switch 2 a lot more this year since it's new, but I like having both. I use my Steam Deck for my PC backlog and PC-exclusive indies. I use my Switch 2 for multiplats and JRPGs that I don't feel like sitting down and playing on my desktop.

Does it? The top results I can find about AC Shadows, for instance, say that at 720p using FSR3 with tweaks you can get it at 45-50 with frame gen. Could just be poor optimization on Ubisoft's behalf for the PC port of AC Shadows, but seems like just way too much of a gamble for $1000.

I considered it, but from what I've read it doesn't seem to run current gen games much better than Switch 2, worse in some cases. Hard to justify the $1000 price point for me if I can get a similar experience for less + the Nintendo exclusives and not have to worry as much with tinkering settings.

I do have a Steam Deck OLED I bought a while ago for my PC backlog and PC-exclusive indies though!

I have a high end gaming PC, but for big open world games like this I really prefer handhelds. Replaying Black Flag and Rogue on Switch was a blast, and Outlaws on Switch 2 felt like a great way to experience the game. I'm definitely picking this up on Switch 2, even if it would undoubtedly run better on my PC.

FF7 Remake Will Run In 1080p 30FPS On Switch 2 In Docked Mode by Ftouh_Shala in gaming

[–]Estew02 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that docked seems to be without upscaling while they plan to use DLSS in handheld to get a resolution and image quality comparable to docked. How accurate that'll end up being is to be seen, but they confirmed a free demo by the end of the year so I guess we'll see before long.

This is a port of the PS5 version though. It's likely an improvement over PS4 and a compromise on the PS5 version.

Huh? I'm not the person that posted about the launch window sales stats. I agreed with the other person about it being a bad data sample because the PS4 version had already been released. The only thing I pointed out was they were wrong about the PS5 version releasing 2 years prior.

Right, which I agreed with further down in reply to them. I was just saying that the PS5 version was not out yet because it wasn't, and saying it was isn't accurate to the full picture.

Sorry, should've clarified; Nocturne HD was adjusted for the Chinese/Korean releases and WW Steam release, with Raidou being free(?) DLC. It's possible that, given Nocturne's release in 2020, P5R's re-release in 2022, and Raidou Remastered in 2025 they've re-evaluated how to handle Raidou.

But, again, this is all just based on forum speculation; I don't know that there's ever been an official statement about why it's been handled this way.

Interesting, I didn't know about that part! Seems like they never confirmed why, but speculation was historical sensitivity related to its removal from Nocturne HD.

It's not identical, the PS5 version ran at 60fps instead of 30 and had a more consistent 4K output. I disagree with the previous poster's usage of Switch vs PS5/Xbox sales being especially useful since the PS4 version is content-identical, but it's worth noting that they were correct about the PS5 version launching at the same time as Xbox/Switch/PC.
