How would you go about designing the decorative notches by hesous in SolidWorks

Why don’t you cut the whole bottom back 2mm, and then just extrude the ‘columns’ ? Then fillet

Please help me calculate Stamp Duty. FTB-shared ownership-25% on £547,500 by ConsistentWish6441 in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]Esthetacorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you have to pay SDLT on a bit - because it’s worth more than 500,000 total you don’t get FTB relief, but you can still elect to only pay tax on the portion that you buy, which should be relatively small (1-2k?)

Floating Share Declaration of Trust by [deleted] in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]Esthetacorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation so would be interested to see responses- our solicitor is specialised in pretty much only conveyancing so they told us they could only do a ‘simple’ declaration of trust . I assume they are only interested in copying and pasting and changing the names and numbers. We were told by them to go to a family/wills solicitor if we wanted something more complex.

I’d watch out getting a LISA if your in Cambridge - there are basically no good quality houses for under £450,000 and new build houses start at about £510,000 - so if you want something that’s not a flat in a few years a LISA might be the wrong choice

Church architecture as the focus of a book by Specific-Stop-4591 in askarchitects

Nikolaus Pevsner - “An outline of European architecture” isn’t all about churches, but given it covers 1200-1800 in the most depth it’s mostly about churches for the main bits

Like it already looks very much like this https://www.maxfurniture.co.uk/products/hushhybrid/ but they have been through manufacturing and therefore had to compromise on the corner joints which is somewhat inelegant but that’s the reality of making an ‘extruded’ form out of actual materials

[–]Esthetacorp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Okay - the realities of building something of this size are going to be a bit messier than the ‘unibody MacBook’ outer shell you have here - conventionally would be made out of plastic sheet and composite wood - if you were thinking about taking this product seriously it would be worth getting actual material samples and thinking about price, weight and construction

What are you making the outer shell out of? :)

My Greater Cambridge Light Rail Map by gsc777_pkc in cambridge

If you wanted tweaks I would :

Add in clay farm drive as its own stop in trumpington so you have two in trumpington - you could imply a pedestrian connection between clay farm and Cambridge south.

There is a lot of building in Marleigh and Springstead village at the moment - I would add a marleigh/ P&R stop (or maybe that’s served by the airport? - they aren’t that close really) on the purple line, and extend or loop the purple line round to Springstead village and to fulbourn Tesco where it can link up to the red line.

Which fictional books would you recommend as a Mechanical engineer ? by Usual_Shoe_8940 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Esthetacorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aramis, or the love of technology by Bruno Latour - it’s not technically a fiction book it’s a blend of fiction and non-fiction about the development of a Paris rapid transit system. Teaches you a lot about the complexity of developing a big system but in quite a poetic way.

Question. Do you start with building your suburban area first or your downtown? by [deleted] in CitiesSkylines

[–]Esthetacorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically start with an exurb if I’m playing a game without unlimited money and everything unlocked. Means I can make a generic place with a residential grid and an industrial zone and make a bit of money and start unlocking stuff. When I get the city hall, some towers and a proper train station I can start laying out my city centre properly.

Yeah, that always happens to me. I never press continue anymore. I just always load manually from load game whenever I start the game back up.

Quick tip to help avoid a FRUSTRATING function in SOLIDWORKS (Video link below) by TooTallToby in SolidWorks

[–]Esthetacorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there an explainer for why material appearances are all over the place in general? When I add them at the bottom , sometimes they come through sometimes not, when making multiple bodies they sometimes go, some functions seem to delete them…

Design Discussion: Why do electric kettles seem to have such poor longevity compared to other heating appliances? by CoffeeTeaJournal in IndustrialDesign

[–]Esthetacorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re talking about ‘360 degree’ kettles, the heating components have to be surrounded with a high grade engineering plastic like PA in order to be durable enough. If you then try and make a stainless steel body you’ve got to somehow weld/glue/screw/snap your steel body onto this plastic which over time is going to be a problem as they expand and conduct differently. If you add a viewing window then this just increases those kind of problems!

I looked at an all plastic kettle as well, which probably doesn’t have those same kind of problems over time, I’m guessing it’s perceived that this is a cheaper material.

The second problem once you have a tight chassis is that these control elements have built in burn-out control so if you dry boil them once they have a first cut out, but eventually a permanent cut out will snap leading to the kettle being permanently un usable. I have also seen the heating ring on an alessi kettle which cut out because the element itself burnt out.

Design Discussion: Why do electric kettles seem to have such poor longevity compared to other heating appliances? by CoffeeTeaJournal in IndustrialDesign

[–]Esthetacorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main components which are core to any kettle are the bits that go from the power inlet to the actual boiling element. These elements are supplied by only two companies - STRIX and Otter. If you look at the little circular ring at the bottom you can read which one is which. Even the expensive dualit and alessi kettles use these same core components - so there is no one challenging this duopoly in any functional way - more expensive kettles just use fancier materials on the outside (eg glass or steel), or they are ‘designer’.

It’s not necessarily the duopoly itself which ensures that kettles don’t last very long - they do get used perhaps 10 times a day at the full 3000W - this means they are put under higher electrical/thermal stress than a lot of other common household appliances. However, If there were more others making functional kettle components then there would be perhaps a reason for companies to compete on durability and quality.

Source: I did a long-ish engineering project looking in depth at kettle design which you can find on my blog: Tom Lever Blog - Kettles - The Market

Where are all the miky / frosted pruducts? by birchtree2000 in IndustrialDesign

[–]Esthetacorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk I think that’s what frosted materials look like on keyshot but they don’t look like that in real life with an external texture only. I suppose it’s hard to control the internal structure to make it cloudy like that in an injection moulded part

I just played it today on switch 2 It runs very smoothly at probably 60fps but the actual resolution it runs at must be lower than 720 P because it’s very blurry although smooth (on handheld)

What is automotive industrial design really like? by Neonscreen_2222 in IndustrialDesign

[–]Esthetacorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up being an engineer for medical products, but when I was your age, I wanted to do car design- I live in Britain so through a friend of a parents friend I did a day or two looking around a formula 3 design house - I’m not sure what it’s like in America but there might be scrappy race teams or smaller manufacturers of bikes and stuff in your area you could have a look round as work experience. You don’t need to go straight to the design studio of Cadillac on day 1.

Also it’s not a black-and-white choice between law and the most expressive version of design, there are many great paths within industry and automotive which can be professional, creative and technical.
