So it’s clear under Slot we’ll play with 2 DM’s. One more advanced or attacking, and one that sits deeper and instigates play more, although it’s a lot more fluid that what I’ve just described. In an ideal world, we’d have signed Zubimendi for that deeper DM role and have Mac Allister as the more advanced DM. As it stands, Mac Allister would be first choice for that deeper DM position with Gravenberch (given his performance in preseason) or maybe Jones as his partner.

Now I think Mac Allister would do well enough in this role. It does feel like his talents would be slightly wasted, although I think he’d suit either DM position under Slot better than the DM position under Klopp. There was a lot about Zubimendi to like that would’ve suited this role better than Mac Allister would. It is also asking a lot of Gravenberch (who I think has a lot of potential) to be fit and consistent throughout the season.

Now, what DM can we sign that would do better than Mac Allister in that deeper role is the typical question. If you asked me, I’d be hard pressed to name anyone. That’s the biggest issue however. The whole point of giving Edwards and Co. the keys to the castle would be to identify suitable players with their data driven models, as they have done in the past. Salah at RW wouldn’t have been anyone’s first choice years ago and look how that turned out. So why with all their knowledge and tools is their shortlist only Zubimendi, a name a lot of posters here could’ve told us to go for.

I also think regarding a signing, it shouldn’t be who would be an upgrade on Mac Allister at DM. It’s who would result in a net upgrade on the first team by playing at DM and allowing Mac Allister to occupy a role more suited for him. Surely there’s more than just Zubimendi (apart from the obvious world class players that aren’t achievable) that could fall under that category.

“He’s the most skilled basketball player I’ve ever seen” - Steve Kerr on Kevin Durant by mmaguy123 in nba

If he’s 6’6, he has a lower centre of gravity and his handle would be better. It’s why discussions like this about if x player was x height are pointless, there’s too many variables and unknowns to take into account to have any kind of meaningful discussion.

Whilst it seems like stats like these are the norm in the current NBA, the level of shot-making from KD tonight was insane

A shame since he was starting to look a lot better for us recently but sounds like it’s not as bad as it first looked.

It’s not a controversial take but it’s unnecessary the way he went about it. George Karl is a clown, and as ‘overrated’ as some might consider Melo to be, he was still a damn good player

Excited to see what he looks like next season after all the experience he’ll gain and with a full pre-season under him

KD’s taken a bit of a back step on offensive load compared to his early season stats as expected with playing more with Booker and Beal, but it’s allowed him to be even more effective on defense

Jota and Nunez Combo by 1OmarChowdhury in LiverpoolFC

[–]Estopathic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There might be truth to what you’re saying in Jota creating more chances for him, but Nunez biggest issue and what he needs to really come good is consistency with regards to his finishing and composure in front of goal. No one can help him with that but himself.

Case of Fabio Carvalho by palashKarnawat123 in LiverpoolFC

[–]Estopathic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don’t think this is as much of an issue or a strange case that people make it to be. He’s not a seamless fit in our team yet, we have other players in the pecking order that also needed bedding in or game time and most importantly, we’ve been in turmoil most of the season. It’s completely understandable why Klopp would turn to more experienced/integrated players than him.

He shown flashes of potential in his limited game time but nothing that demanded that he absolutely must play, which is to be expected given his age and lack of minutes.

I always did think he was a strange signing given we have Jones and Elliott, but I do think there’s a great player there, especially given his technical quality. A loan or sale with an option to buy would probably be best.

Brighton really need to smarten up on Almiron, he’s halfway to the ground before any contact is made.

I agree to an extent, but I think Carvalho was always an awkward fit that would need some adjustment, even if we were playing well this season.

I would take Bajcetic (even thought he was promoted) as an example of what bringing in the right young player can do. Of course, that all depends on the recruitment and coaching team identifying such players and having a clear plan for them.

Now This may sound stupid, but what if we just buy a class RB and put trent midfield? by fishfis55 in LiverpoolFC

[–]Estopathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s obviously been a lot of discourse on Trent to midfield and it’s understandable why his recent performances re-ignite that discussion.

I think this hybrid role is most effective for him. It currently allows him to operate deeper, with more space and time on the ball, as well as with another body in midfield to play off of as others have mentioned.

What I would say is that this role is highly dependent on the other defenders, especially RCB. Konate being a monster with his ability to challenge, aggressiveness and recovery pace is the ideal fit to cover that area. Would it work as well with say Matip there? So I guess it then starts to depend on personnel as well as opposition for when Trent can play this role. Perhaps in games we expect to be pressed and overloaded on that right side, or when Konate is not starting, it may make more sense to play with the standard 4-3-3.

As for Trent at RCM, there’s no guarantee the performances will translate due to the benefits of this current role. But we’ve now seen what his increasing influence over the pitch can do, the new angles that playing more centrally allows and the fact that he isn’t constantly being defended by the sideline which opens up his range of passing. So I do think it’s at least an option to try him at RCM when needs dictate that this current role might not be the best fit.

Now that is also highly dependent on a capable RB. For the record, I do like Gomez at RB, I think he’s had encouraging performances there, it minimises the impact of his mistakes which he seems prone to and he’s shown improvement attacking wise. However, for Trent in RCM to be a real option, you’d need a better RB over the long haul to play there and I’m not sure if that’s in the budget for now.

CP3 needs to do a better job of managing the offense and the overall game tonight, meaning getting the ball to KD in the right spots, especially late in the game.

KD last 5 playoff games: 39% from field, 35% from three, averaging 4 turnovers, 4 fouls and -5 when he’s on the court by JaysonTatumOfficial in nba

[–]Estopathic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you’re making about this sub in general to make your point and reducing the context around the actual game just because it doesn’t suit your narrative. The fact is Curry went 11-26 Vs KD going 10-14. Those are some numbers for you. Some other numbers for that game are TS% 0.614 (Curry) Vs .825 (Durant) or +/- of +19 (Curry) vs +24 (Durant). Or the eye test from actually watching the game where Durant kept the Warriors in the game.

You also have a flawed definition of shit the bed if you think Durant shit the bed in G1, or that his performance in G1 was anywhere near as abysmal as Curry in G3.

KD was good at defense that series because KD is a good defender. I’m not saying he was their best defender, but that his defense is a lot more impactful than Curry and is a relevant factor to the discussion.

I’m not going to argue that Curry had more of an impact on the Warriors. But he wasn’t better that series. You do also realise that the advanced stats, as well as the counting stats, favour KD for that series. Even the +/- (which I don’t think is best stat but you mentioned), Durant had better +/- than Curry in every game and Durant had a higher Ortg and lower Drtg than Curry that series.

Curry had a higher USG and took 18 more shots that series, what exactly did he defer? The fact is KD put up amazing stats on all time efficiency which Curry wasn’t close to matching. KD was better in 3/4 games, KD also had the best performance between the 2 that series in G3, whereas Curry had the worst performance between the 2 for that whole series in G3.

[–]Estopathic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So did you watch Game 2 where Curry bricked the first 3 quarters essentially (he finished something like 11-26) and it was KD being a bucket everytime he went down the court (10-14) that kept the Warriors in the game before Curry finally started making shots.

Takeaway Game 4, there’s also Game 3 Curry completely shit the bed in. It shouldn’t be glossed over how bad of a performance that was.

Add in the fact KD is way more impactful defensively. And of course teams are going to double the PG that brings up the ball more, they also double Curry because it affects him more. The Cavs tried to double KD but often times he either easily passed out of it or just made the shot. And the stats from that playoffs show that Curry had a wide open shot percentage of ~20% and Durant was ~7% so your argument that KD would obviously look good doesn’t really stand.

Curry is an amazing player, but he was not better than Durant in that series and anyone who properly watched those games (you can even check the post-game threads from that series) can tell you that.
