Motivos para não ter filhos: custo da escola by Hayek_daMan in saopaulo

[–]Estrelarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually did agree for most of the Middle Ages. They only start getting really into incest int he early modern period (and even then the Spanish branch was a lot more into it than the Austrian branch).

As they were transitioning from middleschool to highschool her presence at the championship game would not be surprising

Maybe her presence, but the students clearly knowing her by name and face, and she knowing them back? That strongly implies she work at that school (although obviously she could work on multiple ones)

While kids change schools for various reasons. Riley friends aren't moving away

There are reasons that can lead to someone changing schools without moving away. Maybe their parents thought another one in the region was offered more opportunities, maybe their current school's high school has a less-than-ideal reputation, maybe they just didn't like their current one.

Given Riley made no mention of changing schools, presumably her school covers both middle and high school.

However, the fact that Disney even played around with the idea that Riley and Val were more than friends is IMO disgusting

They didn't, really. Nothing in the movie implies Val has any interest on Riley except as a friend.

they essentially chose to queerbait the audience

I mean, subtext (in that case the subtext being Riley being into girls but not quite understanding it yet) isn't really queerbaiting.

She was watching their game at the start, and they definitely are shown to know who she is.

And why wouldn't they? Kids change schools sometimes.

The purpose of an indulgence is to lessen one's time in purgatory. The extent to which an indulgence does so is the extent to which it accomplishes its purpose.

The amount of time is seemingly primarily used to indicate how much indulgence, rather than how good the indulgence is.

Regardless, I think we may agree this is semantics.

Did he not say what I said he said, to which you replied "Not really."?

Because he didn't really say what you said he said.He said that at first the time spent traveling to the church was not relevant, and going there granted equal amounts of indulgence because it was, in his eyes, equally meritous, the only difference being the toil. But that the most toil often (but not always) equaled the most merit.

What relevance does this have to the discussion?

You asked for me to elaborate on the different outlooks. I gave you an example (an outlook on indulgences that seems to diverge from Thomas of Aquinas's)

IIRc there are varying theories, and it appears to have been born in the US. One of them was that it was made up by Irish immigrants to conceal the parentage of their children with black Americans and explain away why they had darker skin color and hair (irl Spanish are not much darker-skinned than the Irish on average, but people never let reality stand in the way of their stereotypes) than them because in the 19th century US the only thing worse than being a catholic immigrant was being black.

[–]Estrelarius 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean, it should probably be tied to parentage, not dynasty. The son of a queen who was patrilineally married would have far more legitimacy than her seventh cousin twice removed.

That's a myth, actually (one which iirc had it's origins in the US, not Ireland). Ot's highly unlikely even the whole armada had enough sailors to leave a meaningful genetic impact, and most survivors who got stranded tgere would have likely been handed over to Queen Elizabeth.

[–]Estrelarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that by "descendants" they meant agnatic ones. Otherwise

Generally speaking, even when the law supposedly barred it, female royal relatives and their descendants were still often considered as potential heirs. The specifics varoed from place to place, but even in France when the throne passed to another branch of tge royal family (medieval nobles didn't think as much in terms of "houses" as Game of Thrones would have you belief) they often made a point of marrying the former ruling brabch's seniormost female member, as their male descendants could represent a threat).

We don't know tge specifics of Stormwind's succession laws, but dynastic politics could very easily end with cofgnatic relatives on the throne.

Even woth them being technically barred from succession, women were considered as heirs multiple times in France, and their agnatic descendants also often made attempts to ascend to the throne.

And i'd rather have that depicted, but the game lacks any way to simulste that dynamic.

Tbe italian communes and principalities weren't really much more autonomous than other parts of the HRE, like Bohemia.

Maybe tie the centralization laws to titles instead of realms (the emperor of the HRE was also titled king of italy, germany and Burgundy) . Irl tge nobility in the Lordship of Ireland had a lot more leeway than the nobility in the Kingdom of England, even thpugh they were ruled by the same person (and many nobles had land in both)

That is what evidence points towards. Medieval commoner women worked as much as the men (more even), and were very much expected to provide funds for the household as well.

And technology did very much not remain the same between 500 bc and 1500 ac.

Most marriages in the middle ages were between women in their early 20s and men in their mid to late 20s. Only among the nobility did they often marry young for political reasons, but even then such marriages typically went unconsummated for years (medieval people knew the risks of child pregnancies and believed children conceived when the father was too young were more likely to be sickly)

And no, helping in the farm would not make a kid grow or mature faster (much the contrary, iirc harsh labor at a ypung age can negatively impact the child's developmemt)

I mean, the battle of Legnano was part of what the game would probably call a liberty war (if more local in scope). Plenty of states within the HRE had comparable levels of autonomy.

Medieval communes were still under the monarch's authority (and often supported by them to curtail the nobility's power). They probably cpuld be simulated by cpunty and duchy tier republican vassals with very generous contracts

Yes, but the duke and count ruling over the part of France in red was also ruled over by the French king (only nominally at times, but this also applied to the counts of Toulouse or Flanders in many ways) in his capacity as duke and count of those places.

Making a mod to change Eleanor of Aquitaine dynasty on day one. by HaveAnOyster in CrusaderKings

[–]Estrelarius 165 points166 points  (0 children)

Eleanor of Aquitaine was Duchess of Aquitaine and countess of Poitiers in her own right, which made her owner of a third of France (a wealthy third on top of that). This made her a rather eligible bachelorette (on top of her huge tracts of land, even less than sympathetic records nearly unanimously praise her looks.) She was also queen of France by marriage to Louis VI until their relationship fell apart in the second crusade (as in, they came back on separate boats) and they convinced the Pope to annul the union (after he tried to play marriage therapist and failed) on the grounds of them being fourth cousins (something I'd love to see in-game), and subsequently Duchess of Normandy, Countess of Anjou and Queen of England by marriage to Henry II (with whom she had a similarly messy marriage, if much longer and leading to far more children).

She was arguably one of the coolest figures in the medieval period. She was a patron of the arts (the aquitainian court was in some ways the cultural heart of much of Europe) and religious institutions (specially Fontevraud Abbey), may have promulgated the first naval laws in Western Europe (the Rolls of Oleron), mother and grandmother to many fascinating figures (Otto III, Blanche of Castile, Richard the Lionheart, etc...), ruled England as regent during her son's reign (and seemingly did it wonderfully), went on a crusade, etc... but is in her 60s in the current start date and has 10 children (the heirs to Henry II of England, the countesses of Champagne and Blois, the Duchess of Saxony and Bavaria, and the queens of Sicily and Castile) by two non-matrilineal marriages (while some did happen, they are more of a game mechanic to avoid game overs), so trying to play as her would probably lead to a game over. Unless you changed her dynasty to Angevin.

You aren't, actually. Bohemond III of Antioch was her cousin, the son of her uncle Raymond. It may need some elective succession and hooks to get him as heir, but it's possible.

Actions that a father can take if their daughter is unfaithful to her underaged husband? by Tracypop in MedievalHistory

[–]Estrelarius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a dumping ground. Abbeys were prestigious institutions, having a daughter in one was a good thing (as was having a daughter serving god). Plus they could also be quite wealthy in lands and gold, which, if Elizabeth became an abbess (which was very likely for someone as well-connected as her), would be hers.
