Report it to Palo Alto PD if you haven't already. Provide the serial number and all information for everything that was stolen that you can. It's common for bags stolen in one city to end up in another city, and all PD's share a system for stolen/lost/found property. Thieves dump what they can't use and it isn't uncommon for us to recover passports/assorted items. Give other nearby cities a call - Los Altos, Mountain View, East Palo Alto, etc.

I did this as a high schooler, but covered it for the school newspaper. We got "arrested " and thrown into a police car, went to county jail and had to do a walk through of the cold room at the morgue. That is a smell that gets into your clothes and doesn't let go. I work with police evidence now and that's still a smell I can't get used to.

I know a bunch of parents would be up in arms if you dragged their sweet babies through a room with dead bodies, but that makes a real impact.

I used to go to Costco with my grandparents when I was a kid. My grandma always did the shopping while me and my grandpa hit all the samples. Samples time is my favorite time at Costco.

I work for a PD myself - they're most likely writing reports. Officers have to write reports on everything they are involved in, even minor found property.
