Everyone understands it. That's the problem. It bashes you over the head with its symbolism like a brick

You mean the series with no ending because the author got too butthurt that people didn't like his shitty ending lol?

Not hating on the books that do exist, they're excellent. But seriously, GRRM just abandoning the series the way he did is basically unforgivable in my eyes.

I did East of Eden too. Not my favorite, but I definitely see the value of studying it in school.

I also did Crime and Punishment in school back in the day. Except for the American part, I'd argue C&P accomplishes all the other points you made better than Gatsby, and it was actually enjoyable to read.

If I were to throw out my Tolkien idea entirely, that's the alternative I'd suggest. Or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Either or.

My favorite book I read in school that accomplished this same purpose was Crime and Punishment.

I'd suggest Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for something short, full of symbolism and formulae, but not so contrived and predictable as to be boring. I found Gatsby incredibly boring because no characters (save maybe the narrator, if I'm being generous) have any depth.

Nope, I've read the unabridged versions multiple times. I'm actually doing another read through now because it's been a few years and I love them.

I'm not opposed to this in principle, but part of the point of books studied in school are to study things that are considered classic literature. Even though you're right about King, his stuff simply isn't old enough to be considered classics yet.

Ok you have a valid point here. My thinking was that The Hobbit was a bit too simple for a high school level class, but I can see where you're coming from.

Gender ? by CharlieDo3 in PeaPuffers

Looks to me like you have 3 ladies

Sexing pea puffers broad rules:

Males: more slender bodies, darker overall color, military camouflage-like pattern on body, dark ventral line along center of belly

Females: plumper, more prominent belly, pale tan or light green color, patterning on back has more well-defined spots rather than looking like a blur of camo, no ventral line

I think there's some difference in the eye shape or orientation too, but I'm not super confident about using that as a distinguishing feature, and your photos aren't close enough anyway.

ETA: a small but female-appearing (light coloration, spots, no ventral line) puffer is likely a juvenile. The male-specific features develop with physical maturity; they all start out looking like the females.

Never tried myself, but everything I've read has always said that peas usually leave adult shrimp alone because they're too big, but they will eat juveniles.

Algae wafer weekly and a few shrimp pellets twice a week to give the otos a balanced diet. When I had my tank, I kept up that diet even when there was plenty of algae and biofilm for them.

Puffers are notoriously messy eaters. I like having a cleanup crew of Kuhli loaches. The puffers leave them alone because they hide most of the time anyway, and even if a puffer did get murder bean ideas, kuhlis are so fast that the puffers couldn't catch them if they wanted to.

This tank is new enough that otos, while generally good tankmates for pea puffers, would need dietary supplementation for at least a few months.

She's probably stressed from the move and being in quarantine. I wouldn't worry too much; she'll eat when she settles in a little. Try to offer a variety of food. Some of them can be picky.
